Notes: Demo is a deliciously dark lick of an India Pale Ale. It’s medley of roasted malts and heady hops will have your senses dancing to the beat of a different I.P.A.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date inkjet printed on the neck of the bottle.

Tan head and lacing do a great job with dressing the glass, opaque brown color talks about being black. Stodgy pungent hop nose with a charcoal burnt graininess in the nose. Smooth with some crispness on the backside. Some burnt flavors from the malt, some sweetness as well. Hoppiness is pungent and pulls on the palate. Finish goes towards dry with a clean roasted flavor and lingering hop.

Solid, perhaps one of the best beers Magic Hat has come out with in years. Only gripe is that I expected it to be full on black ... splitting hairs now.

12 oz. brown bottle. No freshness date. "Love is blind to your Behind."

A: Pours a dark brown with tan head. Sediment is visible. Good retention with a little lacing.

S: Strong burnt grains and an average hop aroma.

T/M: Flavors of burnt malts and a thick hop backbone. Goes down pretty smooth with a somewhat sweet feel. Aftertaste has that same burnt malt taste, yet is still clean.

O: I.P.A.? A good dark ale IMO. Good mixture of malts and hops. A good beer from a brew company I had almost forgotten.

Cheers!

A- Nothing more than a black porter color. Had a nice head, but quickly died. Nice lacing for a while.

S- Porter smell. Very malty. No hops, but thee is a faint spice note. A tiny bit of alcohol nose is present, not much.

T- It's a porter. Not even a IPA in quality. Very malty with the faint spice that was detected in the nose.

M- Medium body. The Demo is too carbonated, and not smooth enough to make the porter flavors creamy in feel. Not really all that refreshing.

*I will not be seeking out this beer again. My brother somehow acquired a case of it, and I do thank him for it, but it's just not for me. It's not like a Black IPA at all; it's more of a porter. It's too harsh and carbonated in the mouthfeel and somewhat weak in the flavor to be something I'd want to keep around after my household is done drinking the case.*

A - Pours a dark brown black color with a finger of frothy tan-brown head. The head has pretty good retention and laces nicely.

S - Aroma is full of sweet lightly roasted carmel malts. There is also some sweet chocolate and some coffee elements that break through.

T - Starts off with some chocolate flavor and some roasted sweet carmel malts. A little bit of coffee flavor in the background. Just a touch of hops come through in the middle with more chocolate flavor and roasted flavor. The finish is fairly sweet with a some brown sugar flavor and toffee malt. Finish feels a little bit off.

M - Medium-light to medium bodied with moderate assertive carbonation. Feels even a bit creamy at times with a slightly syrupy finish left behind.

D - Fairly drinkable. Resembles more of a porter than an American Black Ale with the rather low hop presence. The flavors are pretty nice up finish with feels a bit off.

The beer is very dark brown, has a huge tan head that leaves some lacing, rather small curtains.

Smelling of toast, dark roasted coffee, smoked meat and chocolate.

Starting with burned toast, dark coffee beans, bitter high grade chocolate, a few sprinkles of brown sugar and soy sauce.

Medium high carbonation, rather watery and a medium body, a coarse dry finish.

Well it's black, more than IPA. Miss some body and maybe more sweetness and less bitterness might have been good.

I had a devil of a time trying to find this brew on Beer Advocate, so here I have added it...

Though it doesn't pour "black" it does pour dark, and it has a decent head and very good lacing down the pint glass. The smell was underwhelming, in that I couldn't pull anything out of note. The feel was crisp, smooth, and very drinkable, which I could say the same thing about the taste - decent enough to down more than one in one sitting. Overall, I wasn't overly impressed, but I wasn't disappoint. I am glad I have several of these to enjoy and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

A - Very dark, almost black with a large creamy tan head with good retention.

S - Buttered biscuits and earthy grains

T - Immediately you are hit with toasted bread and coffee, also hints of dark chocolate.

M - Good.

O - Magic Hat puts out good beers. This style isn't one of my favorites, but they still did a good job with it.

Had this one last night so I am doing this from memory.

My overall impression of the beer was very good from a taste standpoint, but there were some major flaws with the brew. By the name "Demo" its pretty clear that this beer isn't 100% there yet, but it was also behind where I thought it would be.

First off, it pours a black semi-opaque color with a nice roasty head and good lacing. However there are chunks of green sediment floating in this beer. I am OK with hazyness or a little yeast on the bottom, but I could see chunks of hops and break floating in suspension. This came off as very unprofessional for a brewery of this size.

My second problem with this brew is that I don't buy that it is an IPA or even a black IPA. It's really just a hoppy porter. The hops don't dominate like they should in an IPA. I get more roasted malt on the palate than hops.

Other than that it has very nice characteristics: a nice roasty smell and taste, fresh American hops, a well balanced malt and hop profile. Very unrefined, but not far off from a solid brew. Highly drinkable without any astringent aftertastes or off flavors.
