Three inches of fluffy foam cap a marginally opaque reddish brown body. Brown sugar and walnuts with a touch of oats are present in the nose and carry through into the taste but hide behind the bold rye front. It reminds me of 100% Whole Grain Brown Irish Soda Bread, so I almost forgot that I was drinking a beer and broke out the margarine. The nostalgia factor may be biasing my review, but I quite enjoyed this experience and would recommend that the reader pick up a single to try.

Poured into a pint glass: color is copper, slightly opaque, haed is tan and presents near 1 inch thick then dissipates to a good looking top with lacing down the glass.

Smell is pretty good, slight earthy front from the rye, pretty big hop grassy note and a nice biscuit/wheat presence.

Taste is pleasant as it warms, well mixed flavor of biscuit and rye, pretty bitter hops, mostly earth and grass type flavors; large amount of wheat/biscuit presence.

Mouthfeel is also improves as the it warms, good blend of hop bitterness and wheat/rye mouthfeel.

Overall, a very good rye ipa style representative, a little more biscuit/wheat type flavor and presence than expected.

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. A new beer to me from these guys; acquired this bottle as part of the Magic Hat spring variety pack. Expectations are moderate based on the style and the brewery.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a very dark coppery ruby color with lots of large and smell chunks of sediment floating in the glass. One finger of creamy off-white head that leaves behind good lacing. Looks pretty nice.

S - Smell is okay. Bready and malty, but I'm not picking up on much rye. Fruity and yeasty. Melon. Bubblegum. Soapiness. Some mild alcohol fumes. Lightly floral.

T - Taste follows the nose. Sticky caramel malt, orange, melon, grapefruit hop bitterness, maybe even some strawberry, but it mostly tastes like a regular American IPA. Mild rye character / peppery spicing is noticeable as the beer warms a bit.

M - Feel is sticky, bitter, and dry. Lots of piney / grapefruit hop bitterness clinging to the palate. Medium-full bodied with good carbonation.

Overall, an okay IPA, but hardly a rye IPA at all in comparison to other beers like Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA. Moderately high 7.10% abv is well hidden, but perhaps just a bit too high. There are much better Magic Hat offerings to be had, but this one fares nicely when it comes down to it. It wouldn't be my first choice, and the abv is a tad too high to be sessionable, but I would have it again I suppose.

Bottle at 45 degrees into imperial pint glass
Aroma slightly grainy, not particularly of rye, no hops, no spiceness
Head huge (7 cm), somewhere between creamy and frothy, off white, mostly diminishing
Lacing – one large clot
Body clear, medium orange, rather dull
Flavor begins moderately sweet, no trace of the 80 IBUs, lacks rye spiceness, no alcohol, no hops, no diacetyl
Flavor ends sweet, but after about one minute, a light bitterness appears
Palate is light to medium, watery, and has soft carbonation

An unusual rye ale, i.e. no rye characteristics. Not something that I’ll be buying again.
