12oz bottle

Pours a slightly hazy yellow orange color with a large, and consistent white head. Real fresh hops in the nose create a floral slightly fruity bouquet with hints of grassy bitterness. Bitter hops up front supported by a bready yeast and semi-sweet pale malt underbelly, hops dominate long into the finish, whaffs of drying alcohol are apparent just before the finish. Quaffable, a little too high in carbonation but definitely refreshing. HI.P.A may not stand up to some of the other hop monsters of Spring, but this one should not be overlooked. Easily sessionable, and one of the only offerings from Magic Hat that i look forward to purchasing every year.

Hmm this is a pretty big IPA. 6.8%? Whoo. Last beer of the night before I'm off to bed so let's see if it lulls me to sleep with deliciousness.

First of all, this guy is monstrously unfiltered. It's got more sediment on the bottom than my homebrews. But a careful decanting gives me a reasonably clear pour. A dusty yellow with a good, maybe excessive, head at first that dies down to a nice little foam dollop in the middle of the glass. Too little visible carbonation makes it look a little boring.

Smells strongly of pine and.. well.. marijuana. Someone had posted on the forum a while back what the most weed-esque beer was and at the moment this has my vote. A nice earthy hop with most of the aroma hitting deep in the back of the nose.

Flavor is a nice mix of biscuity malt and rich fruity and piney hops. Not too abrasively bitter and very easy to drink. Slightly "burnt" hop taste at the end. I'd say this IPA could do with some solid britishifying to make it a little smoother.

Mouthfeel is decent- suffering from a slight lack of carbonation and when the flavors start cancelign each other out, the mouthfeel is all you really notice.

This is a slight edit from my first review of it, which, upon a second tasting, was actually quite good. Somehow it wasn't working for me the first itme around.

Poured from my bottle to my favorite pint glass.

Pours a hazy golden body white an off white head on top which diminishes thin covering and leaves some lacing.

Biggest smells are fresh flowers and butterscotch. In the background are; toasted grains, pine, light fruit smells, sweet malt.

Tastes like sweet malt at first then the hops hit me. The hops come in a variety of flavors; flowery, piney, bitter, and citrusy. The hops finish this one off with a nice earthy, dry finish. A little light in the mouthfeel considering the beer is over 6%.

Magic Hat is hit or miss for me and this one hit. I hope they start to offer this one all year long instead of a seasonal offering.

Enjoy...

This is a pretty good looking IPA. Very hazy copper body that approaches being opaque. A little more than two fingers of fluffy off-white head that has very good retention and leaves some good lacing behind.

A pretty good hop aroma with some fruity undertones.

Lots of fruitiness mixed with hop flavors. I notice some apricot and pineapple characteristics that are the biggest flavor in here. Also some piney, bitter hops, especially in the aftertaste. Some sweet malts round it out. A pretty decent IPA. I would guess it has some english style hops, but I could be wrong.

Very slightly oily mouthfeel with a somewhat dry finish. Light to maybe medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation.

Pretty drinkable beer, better than what I expected.

A-Good looking slightyly cloudy light amber brew with a one inch foamy head that recedes nicely with decent lacing. Very pretty

S-malty, flowery and heady...ripe and fruity...can't wait to taste it.

T-Like many of the MH beers, there is a fruit backbone here to marry the malt, yet it is light and counterpoints the hop bitterness I expected. very clean and very refreshing...I'm liking this alot.

M-Better balanced than most MH beers, which I find a bit too carbonated for my taste. Nicely done.

D-Well done overall,... a great warm weather beer, which is what this is...just finishing out the summer seasonals in this review...I always liked this offering, and it is as good as I remembered.

Magic Hat Hi.P.A. is a clear and sparkling golden ale with a fluffy white head, adorned with oily bubbles, that leaves thick foamy lacing on the glass. The aroma fills the room. It smells dry hopped-- mostly pine and perhaps tangerine. The malt is a bit muted but biscuity. There is something dry and earthy underneath it all. It is medium bodied, smooth and silky. The finish is crisp and the palate is left clean. The flavor is well balanced. The hops are mostly piny but the tangerine from the aroma is more prevalent here. The aftertaste is shorter than expected and it leaves me thirsty for another sip. This is a great example of a modern American IPA. This must be the best thing I've ever had from Magic Hat. This six pack is about to vanish!

A: snifter. nice opaque orange color. huge solid white head. great retention rate and real nice lacing.

S: nice crystal malt aroma. good light citrus hop aroma, mildly flowery.

T: light hop flavor in front of the malts. big citrus hop flavors. very flowery. a lot of pine.

M: light bodied...mild carbonation level. very crisp.

D: not a bad IPA, but nothing exceptional for the style.

Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a bit of yeast sediment that sinks to the bottom, and a finger and a half of ivory colored head on top. Keeps a nice, full lace and leaves some stick.

Smells of biscuit and caramel malt, some grain, and some citrus and grassy hops. Pretty standard, but wish there was some more hop aromas going on.

Taste is hoppier than the smell but it's still a little subdued - in terms of flavor, at least. Good malt backbone for an IPA, but I'd love more hops to play off of it. Biscuit and caramel malt flavors once again, some earthy and light citrus hops, bit of pine, and a pretty nice level of bitterness. I wish there was more hop flavor to go along with that nice dose of bitterness, but it's a pretty solid flavor profile overall.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, gets a touch dry through the finish with the hop bitterness. Quite smooth.

Pretty solid IPA that I wouldn't necessarily seek out again, but that I wouldn't turn down either.

Bought as part of a mixed 12 pack ($12.99/12)

This was one interesting tasting IPA. Smells very hoppy but doesn't taste it? Has an ABV of 6.8% which definitely kicks in after each sip, but only mildly and its quite a pleasant touch. Taste is hard to describe but its flavorful and smooth. Would have to try again, too bad it's seasonal.

A - cloudy applejuice

S - pretty sweet for a stronger beer, lots of hints ripe fruit

T - serious IPA, strong and bitey, rolls around on the back of your tongue with a nice finish

M - good carbonation and not too bitter

D - at the right temp (cooler) they are great. I don't like them too warm. One of the favorites if you like stronger IPA's.

On tap at the brewery. This beer pours an orange amber with a creamy, white head. Decent retention and sticky lacing. The aromas were dominated by citrusy and piney hops. The flavors were at first sharply hopped, resin and grapefruit followed by some balancing malt. Hints of spices. Medium body and medium carbonation add to the beers right-down-the-middle-ness. Crisp finish and though simple it is one of the best IPAs they have produced.

Pretty good all around IPA, although I might like their Blind Faith a touch better (which has sadly been since retired). Amber color with a medium white head and quite a bit of lacing. Aroma is fruity and hoppy. Flavor is bitter, hoppy and moderately bitter in the finish. Mostly bitter hops here. Solid beer.

Acquired in trade with paulthebeerguru.

Good amount of sticky, slightly off-white head. Light copper in color with lots of bubbles traveling to the top. The aroma is overwhelmingly hoppy. Hops smell as if they are incredibly fresh. Citrus notes in noticeable as well.

Heavy leafy hop flavor comes first, followed shortly by huge bitterness. Citrus comes through, as well as some honey characteristics. Dry and tart aftertaste that feels as if it sticks to your tongue for a minute. Medium to heavy carbonation and medium body makes for an average mouthfeel. This beer is a little hard to finish, as it doesnt go down as well as you think it might.

Honey colored beer with a light foam head after being poured into a pint glass. Mild hops nose. Slight taste of melted snow in the presentation and mostly a hoppy character to the flavor. Some late presentation of a flavor that causes me to think of the taste of bile. Leaves an odd aftertaste in the mouth. I would call it a C- myself.

Bottle from Whole Foods, Charlottesville, VA. Poured into a Blue Mountain Brewery-logoed pint glass.

Appearance: A rather aggressive pour yields a huge two-finger white fluffy head with awesome retention. Extremely fine, fast, and dense carbonation falls upwards towards it. It's a friggin' reverse waterfall. Pale golden body that's slightly hazy. Color seems a bit light, but other than that, spot on.

Aroma: Pale malty grain, light, vegetal hoppiness with a little tart citrus (lemon) in play. Kinda mild. Smells grassy in places, almost dry hopped.

Taste: More pale malt here, slight vegetal "dry-hop" flavor sneaks through, citrus, the slightest hint of roasty butterscotch goodness, and a mild bitterness. Seems sorta shallow in places.

Mouthfeel: Thin, but smooth and even. Light bodied.

Drinkability: Decent, cold use a few more complexities in the mouth and nose, particularly in the malt bill.

Pours a 1/2 inch white head that quickly dissolves leaving some lacing. This beer has a nice color, golden honey with a touch of copper. Not too dark, not too light, just right. Good tight carbonation.

Initial smell of grassy/pine hops with just a touch of citrus. The malt smells lightly toasty and sweet.

Taste of light caramel and slight roast with the hops getting bitter and the alcohol coming through at the end.

This beer feels a little bit gritty towards the end.

This is a pretty good IPA. I would have liked to have a couple more of these to get a better feel for it.

A- Pure honey, nice cotton head, dries up to a clingy thin lace.

S- Pine, malt and almost a sea note.

T - Creamy, good caramel center, sufficient bitter hops on sides to balance.

M - Creamy, coating, medium to full body, good carb.

D - A nice beer.

12-ounce bottle poured into my DFH pint glass yields a glowing orangey-amber body crowned by three fingers of creamy, slick-surfaced white foam with soapy edges that leaves thick, white lacing sticking to the glass in a few fuzzy rings.

Nose is sweet citrus with spicy, prickly pinesap; clean and herbal.

Taste is strong, clean, resinous grapefruit with a palpable bitterness. The solid, but unobtrusive malt backbone asserts itself in toasty tones as perfumey notes of cloves and honeydew melon sweeten the drink. Dry, bitter finish as spicy aromatics linger.

Deep gold color with an 1/2 inch head that died down to a snow cap. Great lacing down the pint glass. Fresh piney & citrus aroma that lead into a burst of hops on the tongue. Malt balanced in the middle with a mildly bitter aftertaste. Quenching and refreshing on this 90+ day in Nashville. Taste was kinda one dimensional but enjoyable. Alcohol strength was not apparent.

Pours a pale foggy golden-amber. Thin head that nonetheless leaves sticky lacing. Dropped into thin cap.
Nose is aroma of pine resin, floral hops, grass, light citrus, lightly toasted malt.
Taste and mouthfeel is blend of slightly sweet light malt and powerful hops. Body is light-to-moderate, carbonation present but not overpowering, and finish is dominated by blend of hops that leaves aftertaste of resin and grapefruit.
Very easy to drink, and pleasant flavored.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into nonic pint glass.

A - Pale with a slight haze. Decent 1" head with decent retention. Moderate to good lacing on the glass.

S - Lovely hop aroma, strong upfront grassy/leafy with some citrus to mellow it out.

T - Pine/leafy hops hit upfront backed by some semi-sweet but restrained malt to make for an excellent early to mid palate taste. More earthy and citrus notes hit as the sweetness fades, leading to a managable bitterness in the finish.

M - Crisp, a little thin, and well carbonated. Borders on watery but holds it's own.

D - While the bitterness isn't as overbearing as some IPAs, it does get to me after a bit. Coupled with a thinner character yet intense flavor, I doubt I'd put back more than one, maybe two, of these at a time. A great brew nonetheless.

Pours a slightly hazy copper color with a small white head. Good head retention and some lacing down the glass.

Slightly hoppy smell with some citrus

A toned down hop taste. Good lingering hop flavor.

Mostly the front portion of my mouth feels the hops at first, and a lingering taste in the back of my mouth.

Not a bad IPA. Woouldn't turn one down. The beer became clearer as it warmed up.

Pours a hazy golden peach, which clears up as it warms. Small white head does not much retention and leaves some lace behind.

Raw hop aroma of pungent herbs, pine, grass, and mild citrus. Very strong and a little must. Faint malt lies behind the hops.

Hops are what this beer is all about. Herbal, leafy, and lots of pine kick in first and remain throughout. Very earthy and raw with sappy sweetness and citrus twang. Some bready sweetness attempts to balance to no avail. Notes of fruit and cider towards the finish. Finishes bone dry. Tastes as if someone was angry - "You want hops? Here, here's your hops!!"

Light to medium in body - way too thin result in a rough and raw feel on the tongue. Crisp, a little coarse and grainy. The hops are a bit too much, definitely unbalanced, overpowering and unpleasant at times. Not undrinkable, but I could not finish the 12oz bottle. Not a fan.

Eye: This is a fine lookiing IPA. Wheaty straw gold in color with a pretty clear body. Head is great, nice retention, very creamy in appearance and real nice large and appetizing in terms of size. Really you don't get a beer that looks this good often.

Nose: Mainly floral with some citrus undertones. Not a very strong malt backbone, but there is some there to support the hops. Not much more than that, overall its typical of an IPA. Nothing special.

Tongue: Real grainy and coarse malt flavor here. Hops aren't as forefront as I would like. Kinda woody if you ask me. Slightly citrus like and a little bit floral. Overall, in undertones, I get a fruity flavor, cantaloupe...even as far as the proportions of flavor that is present in cantaloupe, a slightly watery melon type of flavor. This is all underneath the woody/earthy hops. In my opinion needs a bit more hop presence, more boom.

Mouthfeel and Drinkability: Medium bodied with lower levels of carbonation that is appropriate for the style. Finishes semi-dry mostly because of the hops...the flavor I am perceiving as woody is doing this I think. This is one I'd pick up again, though I'd be on the lookout for something better, to me this just isn't a staple IPA.
