Dunkel WeizenDunkel Weizen
Notes: A darker style wheat beer with unique a banana bread character”Similar to a Hefeweizen, these southern Germany wheat beers are brewed as darker versions (Dunkel means “dark”) with deliciously complex malts and a low balancing bitterness. The color is a cloudy (unfiltered) medium brown with the usual clove and fruity (banana) character, which comes directly from the yeast.”

Appearance: clear, tan in color, high carbonation, small head

Smell: banana, wheat, and cloves

Taste: banana, wheat, and cloves

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, high carbonation, semi-sweet

Drinkability: Above average for the style, it certainly hits all the flavors right, light and bubbly, would want another in a session, but could not spend a whole night drinking these

1st time there as we are traveling. To be fair I only had their 5 out of 6 samplers. So I only had about 4 oz. to give a review for all of my samples. You should know this. I am not a good person to ask on this style of beer. I just simply don't generally like them and this was no exception. Could be great for YOU, just not me.

Poured into a weizen glass, the appearance was a ruggedly dark brown close to black with a tan three fingers worth of fluffy foamy head. Lace seems to cling appropriately and leaves some foamy rings running here and there. The aroma takes on some chocolate covered bananas playing with the clove distraction from the yeast. Malted wheat. The flavor yields to the chocolate initially and then the yeasty clove-like esters. Driven sweet wheaty bite. Then an aftertaste fulfilling the blend of the clove to the chocolate and banana. Quick sweet wheaty finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Mild carbonation. Decent ABV is felt. Wheat smooths out to leave a good feel on my tongue. Overall, interesting dunkelweizen, maybe one of those American dark wheat ales, or just needs to have the yeast interact better with the wheat, not sure. Somewhat good for what it is.
