I first had Bastone's beer at the Michigan Brewer's Guild Summer Festival this past year. My memory of their Dubbel was tasty and I wanted more. Its October and I've finally made it to Bastone to sample their food. They had a selection of just four beers, Wit, Pilsner, IPA, and Dubbel. I was hoping for a seasonal but they were out of one.

We started the night with some Pomme Frites and Tarragon Mayonnaise, a nice touch to the Belgian classic. For my entree, I had the Grilled Onglet cooked to medium-rare. The meat melted in my mouth. The Onglet was served with some wilted greens which had some nice bitterness to keep the taste-buds awake. I finished my night with a pint of Dubbel and warm apple tart with caramel and ice cream. It was a perfect combination to me. Bastone is a place I will visit again.

Stopped by on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Big fan of Belgian ales,so this place was on my must-visit list for a while. Chicken and waffles were excellent, the kids plates were huge, pomme frittes were perfect with garlic mayo. Wife and I split the tripel and the dubbel, both were quite good. The only hiccup was that thw service was almost painfully slow, especially considering there were only a few other customers there at the time. Next time will just be the pomme frittes and beer at the bar.

Great Belgian inspired beers in a hip atmosphere. Pretty good food, great belgian frites with a variety of dipping sauces. In Royal Oak, so expect a wait during peak dining times. Nectar De Dieux is a great tripel. Award winning brewer.

Beers littered with off flavors. I am perplexed as to how they have won so many awards.

This was stop #2 of a pub crawl for our group of 4 this day. We has just finished lunch at another brewery so we just wanted to try the beers as the primary part of our experience here. It was just after lunchtime and the brewery was nearly empty. Consequently we sat at the bar and had good service and got to talk with the bartender.

The brewery is a cut above most brewpubs as far as the ambiance goes, and the layout is more like an upscale restaurant and bar in the decor. The beers are all Belgian-inspired so I was a little apprehensive because this 'style' is usually not a favorite. We ordered a flight of 7 beer samplers, and all were very tasty. I may be changing my opinion about whether Belgian-inspired beers are to my liking. Our group (and I) liked every one of them, and we decided that they deserve a grading of a B across the board.

I forgot to look at the food menu but I notice that it is on the brewery's website. It looks very extensive, and I'd love to come back here someday for a meal. I highly recommend this brewery for a visit.

Been to this place twice; once inside, and once in the outdoor seating area.

The indoor atmosphere quite nice: clean, somewhat dark and barlike, and huge. It is a bit noisy, however, but nothing excessive. The outdoor seating allows you to people watch on Main Street, but it's a bit cramped and the tables are tiny. Also, if you're looking specifically to sit outdoors, prepare to wait a bit, as seating is limited. I'd actually recommend sitting indoors if you're having food simply due to space limitations.

The quality is top-notch. The food and beer are excellent and look excellent too.

The service is good; it was quite busy when we went both times and the servers were quick and attentive.

The selection is huge when it comes to food. Lots of fatty Belgian cuisine, but sooo good. It took me a long time to decide what I wanted since the menu was so large and had a lot of attractive options. I've only had burgers so far but they were fantastic.

The beer selection is quite wide, too. They offer flights of 6, 7 or 8, so I got the flight of eight, which was all their general beer plus their two seasonals. I liked all but one.

While a bit pricy, I'd say the value is worth it overall. Had my boyfriend and I gotten pints rather than the biggest flight each, our bill would have been much cheaper. I'd say the food prices are about average for dinner in Royal Oak.

(Visited 08/2011): Bastone is located in the heart of Royal Oak at the corner of S. Main and 5th. Metered parking is available in the surrounding area.

The interior is pretty cozy with a small bar area on the right and high backed booths and tables in the restaurant area. They have a patio as well. Brick and tile motif. Above the bar hang signs featuring each of their standard beers.

Bastone serves 8 beers including a seasonal or two, and a sampler is available. They range from Blonde, Pils, and Wit to a Dubbel, Tripel and Saison Noir. All of the beers are above average. They also have a few bottles from Jolly Pumpkin and North Peak.

Service on a relatively slow weekday (I arrived right as they opened). The bartender was knowledgeable about their beers and of other recommendations for the area.

The food at Bastone has a Belgian tilt, and my pomme frites and sandwich were good.

Overall this is a pretty solid spot. Maybe not a fair comparison but I think Brugge is a lot better, however this is still a place worth visiting in the area.
