Sticky Icky IckySticky Icky Icky

Brewed by:
Short's Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.10%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Sticky Icky Icky is a radiantly clear, copper-colored American India Pale Ale. It is loaded with citrusy hop aromas of oranges, nectarines, and apricots. This light, yet full bodied ale is perfectly balanced by equal parts sweet malt and juicy hops. A medium bitterness along with a subtle earthiness lingers in the finish.

This new American India Pale Ale is what Ryan Hale, the head brewer at the Bellaire pub, referred to as his quintessential IPA. Ryan combined all of his favorite hops resulting in what he described as “pure juicy goodness”. This beer is loaded with all of the big citrus and fruity flavors American hops can offer.

Bottled on 10/14/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy deep golden; big chunky eggshell white head that sticks around leaving great retention and very sticky lacing. Some minor sediment is noticeable. Lots of froth. The aromas are tropical with some hints of citrus. Hints of pineapple along with some grapefruit. Some cracker and bread is present. Malts are there but not overwhelming at all. The flavors seem to follow the nose. More pineapple and lots of grapefruit. The citrus flavors really shine. Lots of pine with some fresh grass in the mix. Solid earthy bitterness with a nice balanced malt backbone. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's on the lighter side of medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a nice IPA. The aromas start off great, but seem to quickly fade. The craftsmanship is on point. Very enjoyable stuff.

Some shorts beers are not for everyone. But for the majority of drinkers that love ipas, this beer killed it. As close to perfect as can be. 2nd to only Focal Banger as far as my taste goes.

A - Pours a cloudy golden orange with a one-finger white head. Good amount of soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is orange peel, grapefruit, mango, & light floral hops.

T - This is one juicy IPA. The flavor starts with citrus flvors of orange, mango, and peach. The sweetness fades into strong earthy hops. The finish is a mix of piney hops and grapefruit peel. Light lingering bitterness.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel with a dry finish.

O - This is a seriously juicy IPA. The citrus and earthiness are perfectly balanced. Definetly recommended.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle poured into a Founder's Harvest Ale pint glass. Bottled on 8/3/15, making this a little over 1 month old.

A: Pours a hazy, golden-orange color. Minimal white head around the edges.

S: Orange, peach, stonefruit. There's a lot of creamy and tangy notes to the fruit and hop characters.

T: Peach, papaya, apricot. Lots of golden fruits. Not overly topical, but definitely sweet and juicy.

M: Full, good carbonation. Alcohol well-hidden. Very, very bitter on the finish.

O: Lots of hype surrounding this latest IPA from Short's, but I'm not sure I'm buying in. It's very dank and hoppy, and nicely balanced, but something about the actual flavors that don't quite get me excited. It's not very tropical or bright, but rather very juicy and sweet with an intense lingering bitterness. Definitely more of a malt backbone here too compared to some of their other IPAs. Overall, it's a great IPA from Short's, one of their better ones, but just not world-class or able to stand up to some of the other great midwest IPAs.

Recommendation: Any fan of Short's should grab one of these, and grab it soon.

pours a hazy amber. darker than I anticipated before pouring. Nice head that stays with the beer. Smells super dank when popping the bottle cap. Strong aroma throughout the pour - super dank. Also get some hits of sweet malts. Taste is some sweet honey malts followed by in your face hops. dank, pine, and a hint of grapefruit. Mouthfeel gets dinged because this is too dry and resioness even for me. I love dry finishing iPAs but this is a bit over the top for me.

This beer has potential, just a little too dry for me. Would rather have this over freedom of 78, dan's pink skirt, and hopstache, but below huma lupa and superfluid.

Short's Sticky Icky Icky
12 oz. bottle (dated 08/03/15, $1.89 from Copper Vine). Poured into a Samuel Smith imperial pint glass.

A- A cautious pour creates 1-finger of off-white head that drops to a light, soapy film. The body is a hazy, golden-orange that I could mistake for a fruit juice. Light carbonation and awesome sticky spots get left behind.

S- Oh, that's nice. Lots of fresh grapefruit and sweet melon and pineapple aromas. A good mix of hops and malty scents. There's an underlying malt sweetness. A little warmth and the hops get leafy.

T- Up front there's a combination of grainy malts and leafy hops. Through the middle there is a sweet malt quality, like Hawaiian bread maybe. The finish is a solid dose of juicy, grapefruit hops with a spicy quality later still. More sips and I start to get more cracker-like and doughy malts. Some peppery notes as well.

M- It's full-bodied with a good, hoppy bite. The juicy and sweet qualities lend a syrupy feel, but it gets rather dry in the finish.

O- This is a really solid American IPA. It's quite hoppy, but a quality, malty backbone lends a level of balance I crave from the style. I'd definitely buy this one again when I'm looking to please a hoppy urge.

Look: Clear, solid amber body. Off-white, creamy and pillow soft looking head. The head is sticky and clingy. Nice columns of legging and lace.
Smell: Nice - Fresh hops. Sweet, juicy, pine, and citrus. Almost dank.
Taste: Balanced hop sweetness with citrus and Pez candy sugar taste. Resinous.
Feel: Substantial. Medium body. Good amount of carbonation. Medium in the mouth. Longer finish.

Overall - Surprisingly good. This could be a go to beer. Underrated.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/3/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, passion fruit, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, light honey, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, passion fruit, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light honey, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, melon, passion fruit, berry, lemon/orange peel, pine, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

I picked up a bottle of Short's Sticky Icky last week at the Lager Mill. I've been anticipating this beer and I'm interested to see what how it turns out, so lets see how it goes. 2015 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks good, it's got a nice design and it's eye catching. It poured a nice yellow color that took on more of a golden hue when held to the light with almost two fingers worth of creamy off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some spotty lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a nice mixture of fruity, floral and dank hop aromas with the fruit sticking out slightly more than the rest. Up next comes a little bit of doughy yeast that leads into the malts that impart some biscuit, bready and sweet malt aroma while making for some nice balance. This beer has a good aroma, I like the hop profile and the balance.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a slightly higher medium amount of sweetness with the hops showing up first and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma and this time they all show up evenly. Up next comes the malts which are just a little lighter than they were in the aroma and they impart those some bready and biscuit like aspects with some sweet malts and doughy yeast showing up in the background. On the finish there's a higher amount of medium bitterness with a nice hoppy aftertaste. This is a good tasting beer, I have no complaints.

M- Fairly smooth, crisp, a little clean, medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and a good example of the style. it had everything that I look for in an IPA and all the different aspects worked well with each other. This beer had nice drinkability, I could drink a couple of them. What I like the most about this beer is the hop profile, it's pretty good. What I like the least about this beer is nothing, there isn't anything that I dislike or would change. I would buy this beer again and I will for sure get it again if they release it next year. I would recommend trying this beer if you like IPA's. All in all I was happy with this beer, it was just a tasty IPA. It's not a favorite Shorts beer and it's above average for the style. Good job guys, this is a tasty IPA.

I was reading about all the early hype on this beer so I decided to make a run across the border to give it a try. No bottle date, but it's a recent release, so it's fresh. I'm pouring this into a twelve ounce tulip glass.

Look- Pours a cloudy gold color with a minimal amount of white foam that settles quickly.

Smell- Passion fruit, guava, and some pineapple. It smells like tropical punch!

Taste- Guava, mango, passion fruit, and a hint of pine. There is a bit of a grassy earth-like finish that reminds me of a wet hop ale.

Feel- It's a little on the watery side with a bitter bite in the back.

Overall- This is one very fresh tropical tasting IPA that has qualities that remind me of a wet hop ale. It's probably one of the best I've had from Short's and would gladly welcome in my beer fridge any time.

Bottled 8/3/15. Served in a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Pours a golden color with two fingers of frothy white head. Aroma is really fruity with loads of fresh cut pineapple, mango, peach juice, apricots, pine resin, sweet malt. Taste is a bit peculiar with sweet malt and apricots hitting the taste buds first followed by a piney hop bitterness that lingers for awhile. Mouthfeel is light, a little carbonated, and skticy.

I love the title of this brew. Definitely a two sided IPA showing us the initial taste of sweet malts then smacking us with true hop bitterness. Perhaps a bit too much for my palate. Either way hopheads would appreciate its complexity. Good for the sticky summer evenings in Michigan when you need a hop fix.

Bottled 8/03/15

L- Deep golden color, good clarity, one finger white head.

S- Dank with nice tropical and citrus notes of mango and grapefruit.

T- Similar to aroma, nice tropical and citrus with a medium dank pine and a great medium bitterness, finishes with a dry medium pine.

F- Medium typical single IPA.

O- Another great single IPA from Short's, I'd say this replaces Dan's Pink Skirt as my favorite Short's single IPA. I think any beer with Mosaic hops has at least got to be decent, this one uses Mosaic, Citra, Galaxy, and Amarillo so I'm not surprised that it's so good.

A- light hazy orange yellow with decent foam that disappears quickly.
S- wonderful citrus and tropical fruit.
T- reminds me of a Sucks light. Nice hop bite finish.
M- medium to lighter feel. Acceptable.
0- a good brew from Short's but not great.

Poured into a tulip this beer is a hazy orange yellow with a thick 3 inch head of white foam. Smell of citrus, grass, grapefruit, some pineapple, little bit of pine, apricot, orange, and rose floral. Taste of grapefruit, lemon, some pine, nice bitter, grass, slight sweet malt, and earth. Mouth feel is crisp and moderate with a thinner light to medium body. A nice hop forward lighter bodied IPA.

Pours a bright amber with a quarter inch of white head. Head remains as a ring throughout with quite a bit of lacing for the style.
Smells of a malty and resinous bomb on top of a citrus and hoppy backbone. Very enjoyable on the nose. A hint of sweetness from the orange and perhaps apricot aroma.
Taste follows suite. More malt forward than expected from Short's, but not a bad thing. Resin and citrus with a hint of pine finish cleanly.
Mouthfeel is a little light, but overall very clean feeling and aids with the rather strong presence not leading itself to linger.
Overall one of my favorite from Short's, even though this type of IPA isn't generally a go to for me. Happy to have picked up several.

Served on tap. Mellow gold in color, a finger of head that dwindles to a ring with pretty good retention, and lots of sticky, spotty lacing. This one's been described as "pure juicy goodness" and it follows though in smell and taste. M favorite kinds of IPAs. Floral notes are there, but juicy mandarin orange, peach, apricot, and some lemon zing come through. Refreshing and worth picking up the limited release.

Edit: Upping my rating. Now having from the bottle, in a tulip. The aroma and taste is re-dank-ulous compared with having it in a shaker. Not only is the juicy goodness there, but I get that dank aroma and taste, too. Not just worth picking up, you must pick it up.
