Notes / Commercial Description:
Bourbon Carrot Cake is an experimental dessert ale made with carrots, marshmallow, vanilla, maple syrup, orange zest, walnuts, pecans and spices and then aged in bourbon barrels. The aroma is enticing, emitting fragrances that literally recreate a slice of carrot cake that has been soaked in bourbon, right down to the cream cheese frosting. Incredibly complex, yet surprisingly balanced, the flavor of each specialty ingredient seems to take its turn. Pleasant flavors of spice and cream resonate on the pallet causing an uncontrollable craving to taste more.

Pours dark brown with thin, short, off white head fades quickly.

Smells spicey, nutty, bourbon, vanilla, cream

Tastes sweet spicey cake, nutty, bourbon, cream like taste and hints of vanilla. Finish is sweet with light spice linger. Higher medium body and smooth medium carbonation

Had this on-tap at HopCat Detroit's grand opening.

This is just an awesome, awesome beer... what else would I expect from Short's? Haven't had their standard Carrot Cake, but this one I had to try, and it was great. It reminded me like a bourbon barreled pumpkin beer until a great frosting-like sweetness crept up on the end, and then it tasted distinctively like carrot cake. The bourbon character isn't super strong, and maybe that's for the best -- it accents everything incredibly well though. This was one of the better beers I had at HopCat's opening. It was $9 for about a 10oz pour, but it was well worth it. Short's misses with a few of their experimental beers, but they nailed this one.

gimmicky? maybe. they have some weird ones. strawberry shortcake, key lime pie, whatever, it tastes good. this one has a real nice nutty base with a vegetable sweetness, definitely taste shredded carrot here, no doubt about it. the thing i think is most remarkable here though is the way the cream cheese frosting taste is there too. maybe thats the marshmallow, maybe the vanilla, but its really yummy. i taste the nuts too in here, earthy and sweet, a cool cool project i think. the bourbon barrel really brings it together, and im sure this is far better than if it werent done in a barrel. it needs that mellowing oaky booze thing. its a little weirder and a little sweeter than i would want to drink a whole lot of, but i definitely appreciate it for what it is. it really tastes like a carrot cake, rich and even textured right with the flaky feeling to it. not one id care to drink everyday, but how cool to try! my favorite of the weird dessert ones from shorts so far.
