Brewed by:
Short's Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: American Pale Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Short’s Vintage Premium Lager is the perfect replica of today’s mainstream American Pale Lagers, complete with a wort that’s 50% blended rice syrup and hot water. A small amount of 2 row malted barley contributes to its bright yellow color and delicate malt flavors. Crystal clear and boldly effervescent, this beer has yeast aromas that lead into flavors of lightly toasted white bread with a very low residual sweetness. The super light body aids in the ultimate refreshment providing a thirst quenching finish that’s super crisp and clean.

This beer is decent....but not great. The beer poured a clear golden with no head and no lace. The scent carried weak charrdonay flare with grass like balance. The taste was drinkable and balanced. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall this is sessionable but not notable

12 fl. oz bottle
Served in a pokal glass

L - It is straw colored with a slight haze. It has an inch of white head on top.

S - I get a sour grain smell.

T - The taste starts out with sweet grain flavors. Then a metallic bitterness intercedes. The finish is clean with hints of floral hops.

M - Moderate

O - It reminds me of the rust belt brews that still remain. This beer is a good tribute to the regional lagers of yore. I could quaff several of these while watching sports, at a dive bar, or doing chores around the house.

I picked up a bottle of Shorts Vintage Premium Lager last week for $1.39 at The Lager Mill. Well it's Labor day today and I feel like having a Lager and I thought I would give this new release from Shorts at try, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a Shorts imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks nice, it doesn't really have that Shorts signature style to it, but it still looks nice and it's a little eye catching. It poured a fairly clear bright pale yellow color that took on more of a golden color when held to the light with just about two fingers worth of fluffy white head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left some rings of patchy lacing behind. This was a good looking Lager, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of low sweetness with the rice being the first to show up and it imparts a nice clean rice aroma that leads right into a very light grainy aroma with some white bread and bread crust aroma seeming to stick out the most. Towards the end some of that clean Lager yeast come through. This beer had a nice aroma that was true to style, I have no complaints.

T- The taste seems to be very similar to the aroma and it starts off with a pretty low amount of sweetness with the rice still being the first to show up and they impart a nice clean rice flavor that leads into the same light grainy aspect that I got in the aroma and this time the white bread and bread crust aspects are just a little lighter. On the finish a little bit of clean lager yeast comes through with no bitterness with a dry, slightly grainy and rice like aftertaste. This was a good tasting Lager, it had all the flavors I expect from the style.

M- Very smooth, crisp, clean, slightly fizzy, dry on the finish, light bodied with a higher amount of medium carbonation. This beer had a good mouthfeel that was true to style.

Overall I thought this was a decent beer and I thought it was a pretty good example of the style, it had all the aspects the style is know for, but somehow it had just a little more flavor than the popular ones while being even cleaner in flavor. This beer had a good drinkability, it was very smooth, crisp, clean, slightly fizzy, dry on the finish, not filling at all and the taste did a decent job at holding my attention, I could drink more than a few of these, especially if I was in the mood drinking a lot of beer and I think this beer would go nice with a meal. What I like the most about this beer was how true to style it is, it's just what I expect from the style. What I liked the least about this beer was nothing, there wasn't anything that I disliked or would change. I would buy this beer again when in the mood for the style and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good lager. All in all I was happy with this beer, It delivered exactly what a good Lager should and nothing more. It's for sure not my favorite Short's beer, but it is one of the better Lagers I've had. Good job guys, it's great to have a brewery that isn't afraid to tackle any style, keep up the hard work.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 8/13/2014. Pours lightly hazy pale straw color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon, pear, cracker, rice syrup, biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, pear, cracker, rice syrup, biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Minimal earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, pear, cracker, rice syrup, biscuit, light honey, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt, earthy hop, and yeast ester flavors; with a very clean lager flavor and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4%. Overall this is a very nice pale lager! All around good robustness and balance of pale malt, earthy hop, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
