A medium bodied Double Irish Stout, black in color with a rich brown lace. Light roast malt and bitter cocoa aromas lead into big creamy mocha flavors. Aided by the addition of flaked oatmeal, the finish is exceptionally smooth, with only a slight dryness and moderate roasted bitterness.

This beer poured a dark black color into my snifter. A very thin head that didn't last but a second. The nose a slightly sweet forward blend a little malt in the background. The taste is not as sweet as the nose but smooth and full with a little alcohol burn in the back of your mouth. Very smooth mouth feel with a little carbonation. A different style of stout but an enjoyable beer.

Poured into a snifter this beer has a black body with a beige 2 inch think head. Smell is of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, roasted malt, little bit of dried fruit, and a bit of earthy hops. Taste is chocolate, coffee, bit of alcohol, a bit of earth-y floral hops, roasted malt, and dried fruit. It has a light to medium body with a big full mouth feel.

Serving: 12 oz. bottle poured into a Cigar City snifter. Bottled on 3/4/15, making this a little over two months old.

A: Pours a somewhat thin, watery body. Not completely pitch black. Almost no head with a soft pour, but able to generate a nice tan 1/4-finger head with a vigorous pour down the middle.

S: Lots of dark, dry malts. Big dry, bitter chocolate notes. Like chocolate shavings. Some raisin, black licorice, anise. Also quite boozy on the nose, like a red wine almost.

T: Very bitter chocolates, black licorice, raisins. Other than that, not many specific flavors coming through. Just a lot of dark malt, almost no hop balance.

M: Quite thin. Medium carbonation. Very, very boozy and alcoholic. Also not very balanced as this is just one bit malt bomb. Very dry.

O: Not very familiar with this "Dry Irish Stout" or "Export Stout" style. For me, it's like an American Imperial Stout, just with a lot less character and way more booze. And that's just not exciting. This is a big, boozy malt bomb. It's not terrible, but just not extremely enjoyable. Might be nice on St. Patty's Day if you want to get drunk quickly, but still drink good beer.

Recommendation: I'll leave this one for the die-hard Short's fans (like me). Otherwise, there's better Double Stouts and even Irish Stouts across Michigan to grab instead. Short's Uncle Steve's Irish Stout is actually a really good beer and would be my recommendation here. I think that one is like the "single" version of this beer and has much more character and isn't as boozy. Check it out.
