Very Good
Space RockSpace Rock
Notes: Space Rock is a light-bodied American Pale Ale with prominent floral and orange peel-like hop aromas. Only the slightest grainy malt qualities are detectable, as assertive bitter flavors of citrus rind and dandelion leaf take hold. The finish lingers with a waning bitterness that’s not overly dry.

All Space Rock packaged on or after 8/1/2015 is proven to be gluten removed. Space Rock sold on tap may contain trace amounts of gluten from beer poured previously.

Bottled 2/19/16; drank 3/11/16 @ the Yarchives.

Cloudy pale orange appearance.

A rough pour yielded a small white head; decent lace.

Peanut butter & fresh ganja notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Peanut butter & faint grapefruit flavors up front; a bracing-ly bitter, macro-lager tinged finish.

If this is what gluten-free beers are like, fuck 'em. Awful.

Aroma is surprisingly mild, almost neutral. Not much malt presence. Taste is fairly bitter, dry, maybe just slightly lively carbonation. Overall not bad, but would like to see more aromas on the nose.

Very nice pale ale, pours a clear golden color with some foamy white head and very spotty lingering lacing. Smells mainly of some bitter citrus zest hops and a little piney hops. Tastes similarly, along with some malt, herbal hops and biscuit. Fair amount of bitterness but pretty well-balanced with the malt backbone. Smooth thin mouthfeel, good carbonation. Not the best beer I’ve had from this brewery but still a solid brew. Also amazing that it’s made gluten-free.

Pours deep gold. Foamy, medium white head fades slowly with light lacing.

Smells pine, citrus peel, toasted malt and light grassy.

Tastes citrus peel, pine, lightly grassy and a hint of toasted malt. Finish is dry with a pine and bready linger. Medium body and fizzy lower carbonation.

Pale amber color, hop cloudy, pours a nice sized white head, creamy and lingering.

Sweet aroma with some mango and other fruit. Hints of butter?

Nice fruity hop flavors in line with the aroma, but also some flavor hints of diacetyl. A little flabby and sweet up front before the hop bitterness kicks in. Sharp bitterness lingering into the finish.

Medium body and carbonation. Borderline astringent on tongue - unpleasant bitterness could be a sign of oxidation.

Overall seemed a little off to me, with what I perceived as flaws overwhelming some hints of a nice hop character.

Bottled on date of 08/25/17

Appearance - Pours with a slight haziness, golden in color with a white, half-finger width head. Fair retention results in a thin, broken layer of suds across the surface. Lacing comes through as broken webbing and spotting.

Smell - Aroma is displays fair dank, a hint of citrus and a touch of lightly toasted bread.

Taste - Follows the nose. Moderately dank hops with a slight citrus edge. Solid biscuity malt undertone. Quick finish turns decidedly bitter with a grapefruit pith character that lingers long in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Light, nigh watery body with moderate carbonation. Goes down easy enough before a dry finish.

Overall - Fair pale, but like the other gluten-free or reduced brews Ive had it comes across incomplete. I guess it's a great brew for those sensitive to gluten; I'm glad I'm not.

I detect no malt flavor in this, it's all hops. I'm not a great hop taster, but I would say it is piney and fresh. Would compare favorably to so-called session iPad. Would also go well in a Black and Tan. Rating docked due to lack of balance.

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a 12 fl oz bottle on June 23, 2017. If you have a gluten allergen, I would recommend at least trying this. It is much better than any sorghum based gluten free beers I have tried.

This is one of the few Short's B.C. beers available in my area that I have not had a chance to review as yet. In doing so, it also acts as one more domino falling in the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody.

From the bottle: "American Pale Ale hopped with some tasty little nuggets of alien technology"; "Crafted to Remove Gluten"; "* Crafted to remove gluten. The product was fermented from grains containing gluten. The gluten content of the product cannot be verified and the product may contain gluten."

I have had this bottle hanging around for a while & while there were no lees showing on the punt, I Pop!ped the cap & went with a very gentle pour. An in-glass swirl raised a finger of foamy, bone-white head that quickly reduced to wisps. Color was Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity, prompting a visit from the Gelt Gang of Mammon, Midas & Croesus, all vying for a taste. I toyed with allowing them to have my share as I am not really enamored of the taste of these gluten-free beers. Nose had an odd smell, especially for the style. It had a sort of light cheesiness along with a light grapefruit citrusiness. Hmmm. Mouthfeel was medium. Taste had a definite cheesy sharpness, accompanied by a grapefruit-y citrusiness, but this was not the kind of flavor profile that I look for in the style. Finish was dry, but the flavor profile was jarring. I realize that I am not the intended audience for this style, especially since I do not suffer from celiac, but it was not a good example of the style.

Pours a hazy golden color. 2/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of spicy hops, slight piney hops, resin, sweet malt, hint of alcohol, and yeast. Fits the style of an American Pale Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of spicy hops, slight piney hops, grass, earthiness, resin, sweet malt, hint of alcohol, and yeast. Overall, good appearance, decent aroma, body, and blend.

12oz bottle. Served in a teku glass. Pours a pale golden yellow, slight amber hue, two finger thick white head, great retention, lots of lacing. Smells of floral, resin, light biscuit, lemon. Flavour follows, lemon, biscuit with a drizzle of honey, resin, big floral notes. Mouthfeel is lighter bodied, crisp and refreshing, moderately bitter earthy floral notes. Nothing too crazy, fairly bitter though.

It looks like something between Tang and white wine, definitely cloudy. It has a pronounced evergreen and citrus aroma. The flavor is hops, hops, and more hops. Great for those hop heads out there, as it feels like being hit in the mouth with a pine tree.

Appearance- from a hardy pour from a growler it's a transparent copper color with a frothy white head. leaves some lacing.

Aroma- smells alike a citrusy macro lager. weird...

Taste- tastes like the smell. light citrusy grassy notes with a light grainy flavor.

Mouthfeel- medium/ light bodied. good carbonation.

Drinkability- i'm going to kill this growler but I highly doubt i'll ever buy this brew again.

Overall- is this beer bad.. no. but is it worth a purchase in this field and market.. no. if i'm at a place where it's jack squat and this beer i'll take this brew no prob but like I said there's so much out there these days where I don't see this brew being worth anything in my book. the best defense you could say about this beer is that this is a solid pale ale. for the abv and ibu tho I would say a crooked tree destroys this. or I would rather have a 60 minute.

Appearance: Pours a hazy honey color with a two finger head; nice stickage and good lacing action

Smell: Not picking up much of any aroma here, perhaps a little grainy with some tropical fruit

Taste: Grainy, up front, with an aspirin-like bitterness building; perhaps a little fruit underneath, but this is just a bunch of bitter hops

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A rather disappointing brew; just not much enjoyable flavor in this one; hadn't realized it was gluten-removed until after I reviewed it - well, that explains the lack of flavor

-Spiegelau ipa glass. crafted to remove gluten, not verified as gluten free.

A: Light orange coloring, with a heavy hand of haze gives this an orange drink like appearance. Rapid onset of effervesce moves within while the topping is a beige and milky covering of slight statue, but good duration. Heavy on the lace coating.

S: Tropical notes on the nose, lightly sour mangos, fresh grapefruit juice, and lightly sour oranges give this a wet and tropical feel with a nice level of awareness. Apricot, and citrusy-apple notes from the yeast add a nice supporting cast, all of average duration.

T: Tart oranges and semi-dry citrus-grass hops ring in on the flavor department. Tart tropcial hints, dry pine and floral notes, all of a generally good awareness and bittering level per style. Grapefruit juice, toasted orange flowery hops, and a warmth of toasted grain finishes things out.

M: Mouthful was crisp, nice sharp feel and delivery on the tongue, just how i like a good summer time pale. Good feel and carbonation texture.

O: A nice flavor, tart, tropical and grassy hops best sums things ups, Crisp to style, very good level of hop flavor and bitterness nicely balanced makes for a good summer time drinking pale in multples and a finale vote of 3.75 worthy try.

From a bottle into a pint glass.

Pour is a clowdy yellow orange with nice 1 finger of white foam and excellent lace left on the glass.

Smell is earthy hop forward with a bit of citrus. I get lemon and grapefruit.

Taste follows the nose well with nice bitter pine and citrus hops. its spicy and grassy with a bit of orange and grapefruit. Very nice in the nose.

Feel is medium for an IPA with nice carbonation and good coating on the palate. Flavors last for almost a min before fading. Good balance and drink-ability.

12 oz. bottle, bottled 02/19/16 printed on the bottleneck. "American Pale Ale hopped with some tasty little nuggets of alien technology". Crafted to removed gluten, apparently. No abv listed on the bottle.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - Hazy golden orange pour, some chill haze, one finger of good frothy soapy white head that leaves excellent lacing. Apt carbonation. Looks very nice.

S - Aroma comes off as hop-forward; lots of earthy, herbal, spicy hop character that crosses over into the taste. Light notes of bready caramelized malts. Still smells fresh, floral, & soapy.

T - Taste follows the nose: very nicely balanced earthy herbal hop presence, with the sweetened bready malts.

M - Feel is smooth, crisp, creamy. Easy-drinking & light-bodied.

A - Slightly hazy yellow-orange body, wispy white head, lots of lacing.

S - Dank. Lots of pine and herb. A bit of menthol.

T - Follows that nose, with a big hop punch in the front, a moderate malt core with biscuit aspects, and a spicy bitter close.

M - Moderate drying, lots of crunchy hop.

O - I've had IPAs far less aggressive, and the malt is just not strong enough to bear up to the hit. As a result, the beer is somewhat taxing over time.

I had a few Shorts last month and now this lightweight comes my way.

It is yellow and partly cloudy. There is a nice thin head and lace.

The aroma is a profound hops and yeast smell. It has a dry but almost balanced flavor. There is a bit of malt with all the hops.

I usually don't like the light, dry hoppy ales, but this one is one of the better ones. Recommended.

One of the few Shorts beer us Pennsylvania guys got recently.

A - Talk about pale ale such a light shade of yellow with some haze and a 1/2 inch of frothy head that takes a bit to clear. Some lacing.
S - Smells rather nice sweet and malty and has a distinct lemon grapefruit peel hop bitterness.
T - Ah yes it is pretty balanced but the malty body one would expect for a pale is not there with bittering hops out of wack making for a very harsh finish.
M - Somewhat smooth but the lemon like hops are very bitter and harsh

Overall reminds me of a lighter version of "The Liberator" being bitter, harsh, and unbalanced. Avoid if you can.

This beer is "crafted to remove gluten". Bottled on 3/3/16. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a hazy yellowish orange with an eggshell white head that fades leaving nice retention and solid lacing. The aromas are pretty subtle. Some grass and malts with some hints of citrus. The flavors are nice. They're very clean, bold, crisp and refreshing. Lots of grapefruit, lemon and lime. Fresh pine needles in the mix as well. More fresh grass. This one seems to focus on the hop bitterness more than the hop flavor. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is nice. It's light with active carbonation. Very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a very nice pale ale. It's very refreshing. Well crafted. It really has alot of flavor for such a small beer. Good stuff, I like it. It would really hit the spot during the hot/warm weather.

Short's Brewing Co. "Space Rock"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, coded "02/19/16 16:11:59" - I'm assuming that's a packaging date

Notes: Beautiful aroma, like a bag of fresh citrusy hops; but also with woody-spice and earth, and a mild floral component. Somewhat hazy golden body. Excellent head retention and lacing. The flavor follows, and it's really quite unique. I'm inclined to believe that the earthy/spicy/woody character is coming from the grains, but I'm not sure. It's also grassy, which must becoming from hops, so perhaps that's it. Lots of citrus pith! It's solid, but balanced... quite bitter, reaching into IPA levels, but with a full enough malt that it balances without becoming sweet or heavy. It's decidedly medium-bodied across the palate though. I wouldn't call it watered down as some others have.
