Very Good
Space RockSpace Rock
Notes: Space Rock is a light-bodied American Pale Ale with prominent floral and orange peel-like hop aromas. Only the slightest grainy malt qualities are detectable, as assertive bitter flavors of citrus rind and dandelion leaf take hold. The finish lingers with a waning bitterness that’s not overly dry.

All Space Rock packaged on or after 8/1/2015 is proven to be gluten removed. Space Rock sold on tap may contain trace amounts of gluten from beer poured previously.

This is one of the few Short's B.C. beers available in my area that I have not had a chance to review as yet. In doing so, it also acts as one more domino falling in the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody.

From the bottle: "American Pale Ale hopped with some tasty little nuggets of alien technology"; "Crafted to Remove Gluten"; "* Crafted to remove gluten. The product was fermented from grains containing gluten. The gluten content of the product cannot be verified and the product may contain gluten."

I have had this bottle hanging around for a while & while there were no lees showing on the punt, I Pop!ped the cap & went with a very gentle pour. An in-glass swirl raised a finger of foamy, bone-white head that quickly reduced to wisps. Color was Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity, prompting a visit from the Gelt Gang of Mammon, Midas & Croesus, all vying for a taste. I toyed with allowing them to have my share as I am not really enamored of the taste of these gluten-free beers. Nose had an odd smell, especially for the style. It had a sort of light cheesiness along with a light grapefruit citrusiness. Hmmm. Mouthfeel was medium. Taste had a definite cheesy sharpness, accompanied by a grapefruit-y citrusiness, but this was not the kind of flavor profile that I look for in the style. Finish was dry, but the flavor profile was jarring. I realize that I am not the intended audience for this style, especially since I do not suffer from celiac, but it was not a good example of the style.

Taste: citrus some orange lemon zest nice grapefruit hop bitterness.
Overall: this is a decent beer but just a bit to waterd down. It does have a nice hop presence and has a light body. Which makes this a beer you can session drink pretty easily.

It looks like something between Tang and white wine, definitely cloudy. It has a pronounced evergreen and citrus aroma. The flavor is hops, hops, and more hops. Great for those hop heads out there, as it feels like being hit in the mouth with a pine tree.

Shorts Space Rock.

Not really feeling much like drinking tonight but I figured I'd have one before heading off to bed because why the hell not. For se reason I'm excited for this one. Maybe it's the cool label art. Who knows

Look - Pours a moderately murky golden with a slight copper tint along with a one finger white head that lays down to a nice cap of froth on the top of the beer. Carbonation appears to be pretty high with an ever steady rising of bubbles. Read retains throughout the drink and leaves some attractive lacing. 4.25.

Smell - This is a very orange heavy beer based on the nose. Almost smells like a glass of Orange juice. Bit of a floral aspect without any noticeable malt presence. 3.25

Taste - Ripe oranges and a big ass dosage of citric acid. Not really bitter, but pretty noticaby sour and lip puckering. Malts are there but only in small amounts in the form of some light wheats. 3.5

Feel - Body is pretty well rounded and fuller than you would expect with a moderate amount of carbonation. Sour as well which builds as you let it sit 3.75.

Overall - Had somebody told me this was an orange juice esque beer I would have believed them. The bottle states the flavors will be alien. Maybe alien to the style, but not alien in general as it took me one taste to know what was going on. It's a good beer, but maybe be a bit too sour for some and an absolute nightmare if you have acid reflux. 3.5..

There are Clutch lyrics on the bottle. What more do you need? It's a bitter bomb that, while lacking in sweetness usually found in this style, is another solid offering from Short's.

A - Slightly hazy yellow-orange body, wispy white head, lots of lacing.

S - Dank. Lots of pine and herb. A bit of menthol.

T - Follows that nose, with a big hop punch in the front, a moderate malt core with biscuit aspects, and a spicy bitter close.

M - Moderate drying, lots of crunchy hop.

O - I've had IPAs far less aggressive, and the malt is just not strong enough to bear up to the hit. As a result, the beer is somewhat taxing over time.

Poured from bottle into pint glass. Before we go to the beer, just take a minute to enjoy the artwork on the label on this one. Short's has some pretty great label work, and this one is right up there. As a Michigander, a guy flying a snowmobile through space speaks to my soul.

The beer is yellow golden goodness, with an inch of frothy white head that dissolves rather quickly. Leaves behind sticky, soapy lacing all the way down.
Smell is citrus, orange and lemon, some malt appears as the ale's consumed.

Taste is grapefruit, lemon zing, some pine bitterness on the backend, but not much. My wife usually won't go near anything with "pale" in the description, but she digs this one. Easy going down, a little thin on the mouthfeel.

Another sessionable ale from the folks at Short's

Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

Was that a Monster Magnet album? Or maybe it's just some Bowie reference... Regardless, this stuff pours a clear brass topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises mango, grapefruit peel, light biscuit, and tropical tallgrass. The taste holds notes of grapefruit rind, orange peel, white wine grapes, mildly buttery biscuit, and that same bit of tropical tallgrass. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, a pleasant tropical-ish pale ale, likely one of the best candidates for gluten-free drinking I've come across.

One of the few Shorts beer us Pennsylvania guys got recently.

A - Talk about pale ale such a light shade of yellow with some haze and a 1/2 inch of frothy head that takes a bit to clear. Some lacing.
S - Smells rather nice sweet and malty and has a distinct lemon grapefruit peel hop bitterness.
T - Ah yes it is pretty balanced but the malty body one would expect for a pale is not there with bittering hops out of wack making for a very harsh finish.
M - Somewhat smooth but the lemon like hops are very bitter and harsh

Overall reminds me of a lighter version of "The Liberator" being bitter, harsh, and unbalanced. Avoid if you can.

This beer is "crafted to remove gluten". Bottled on 3/3/16. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a hazy yellowish orange with an eggshell white head that fades leaving nice retention and solid lacing. The aromas are pretty subtle. Some grass and malts with some hints of citrus. The flavors are nice. They're very clean, bold, crisp and refreshing. Lots of grapefruit, lemon and lime. Fresh pine needles in the mix as well. More fresh grass. This one seems to focus on the hop bitterness more than the hop flavor. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is nice. It's light with active carbonation. Very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a very nice pale ale. It's very refreshing. Well crafted. It really has alot of flavor for such a small beer. Good stuff, I like it. It would really hit the spot during the hot/warm weather.

Pours a hazy burnt orange with not much head but plenty of carbonation.

Smell is outta this world, no pun intended. Juicy and fruity, I'm getting a ton of peach, apricot, mango, and orange juice in here, with a bit of piney resinous, earthy smell in there too. I was expecting this to be one of the greatest, tastiest IPA's I've had.

Sadly, the taste was a bit of a letdown by comparison, losing the luscious tropical fruit that I was hoping for, with more emphasis on the resins and bitterness. It's still a pretty great pale ale, but the taste wasn't what I was expecting and the earthy bitterness that takes over reduces this one from a mind-blower to just an overall very tasty brew that's a unique blend of East and West coast styles.

Appearance- from a hardy pour from a growler it's a transparent copper color with a frothy white head. leaves some lacing.

Aroma- smells alike a citrusy macro lager. weird...

Taste- tastes like the smell. light citrusy grassy notes with a light grainy flavor.

Mouthfeel- medium/ light bodied. good carbonation.

Drinkability- i'm going to kill this growler but I highly doubt i'll ever buy this brew again.

Overall- is this beer bad.. no. but is it worth a purchase in this field and market.. no. if i'm at a place where it's jack squat and this beer i'll take this brew no prob but like I said there's so much out there these days where I don't see this brew being worth anything in my book. the best defense you could say about this beer is that this is a solid pale ale. for the abv and ibu tho I would say a crooked tree destroys this. or I would rather have a 60 minute.

I enjoy most Short's offerings and also like hoppy beer. Space Rock qualifies on both counts, but I wasn't a fan. Appearance is tan, and aroma is pine cone with citrus overtones. The flavor has loads of big hops, but there is neither sweetness nor alcohol to counterpoint them. The overall effect is astringency based on the thin body. I wasn't really interested in finishing even one of these.

I detect no malt flavor in this, it's all hops. I'm not a great hop taster, but I would say it is piney and fresh. Would compare favorably to so-called session iPad. Would also go well in a Black and Tan. Rating docked due to lack of balance.
