Style: Milk / Sweet Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Swirl Stout is a Milk Stout brewed with cacao nibs, vanilla, and milk sugar. The aromas are bold and sharp, reminiscent of a decadent chocolate liqueur or Kahlua. A satisfying blend of sweet creaminess and dark chocolate create the perfect balance. Roasted bitter flavors are noticeable, but its a lingering sweetness that ultimately drys the palate.

12oz bottle, dated 12/30/15. Pours black with a medium sized brown head; some thin lacing on the glass. Smells of cocoa, vanilla, sweet lactose, coffee, roasted malt and some earthy hops. The taste is somewhat different; lots of lactose with some roasted malt, cocoa, and earthy char. Mild sweetness and bitterness. Average carbonation and body; some creaminess. Overall, it's a well done Milk Stout with a great smell and a straightforward, lactose heavy taste.

Bottle date of 12/30/2015 printed on the neck of the bottle. Poured into a snifter. The aroma is dark roasted malts with hints of vanilla. Pretty faint, not a whole lot going on in the nose but the notes that are there are solid. The taste is more assertive with the roasted flavors standing out and a lingering sweetness in the finish. Overall, Short's Swirl Stout is a solid milk stout that I enjoyed.

12oz bottle from LambicPentameter (thanks!). Bottled 12/30/15. Served in a goblet.

Pours a deep, near-black brown with two and a half fingers of fluffy tan head. The froth shrinks to a patchy surface haze with a full collar that leaves a varied assortment of lacey dots and splotches .

The sweet, distinct aroma of milk sugars takes the lead, followed by chocolate milk and mild vanilla. Not particularly complex but it smells pretty much as expected.

Flavors of chocolate milk, mild roast, lactose, a slight note of charred caramel and some vague vanilla. The milk sugars smooth out the mildly roasty malts with the cocao and vanilla adding some nice depth.

Creamy but fairly light body with soft, fluffy carbonation. Finishes with plenty more milk sugars and some complementary notes of chocolate and vague marshmallows.

I always appreciate opening a box to find something from Short's and this was no exception. Swirl Stout is a tasty, straightforward milk stout. Those folks at Short's are prolific and mighty good at what they do.

I got a bottle of Short's Swirl Stout for $2.79 at The Lager Mill. I've been wanting to try this one since I swe it on the lineup so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a teku.

A- The label looks good it goes well with the beer and it's eye catching. It poured a dark black color that doesn't let any light come through and it has a little over a finger and a half worth of fluffy and creamy tan head that died down to a thick ring that eventually faded away and it left a little bit of patchy lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the malts being the first to show up and they impart some dark malt, roasted malt, chocolate and light coffee aroma with the chocolate sticking out the most and it imparts a nice milk chocolate aroma. Up next comes a creamy and sweet lactose aroma with some vanilla like aroma showing towards the end. This beer has a good aroma, I have no complaints.

T- The taste seems to be pretty similar to the aroma and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the malts still being the first to show up and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma with the roasted and dark malts showing up nicely with the chocolate still sticking out the most imparting some nice milk chocolate flavors. Up next comes a creamy and sweet lactose flavors and on the finish there's hardly any bitterness with a little more sweetness taking it's place and it had nice roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla and lactose like aftertaste. This is a very nice tasting beer, it reminds me of Uncle Steve's Irish Stout if it had some big chocolate and lactose flavors.

M- Smooth, creamy, a little crisp, on the thicker side of being medium bodied with a slightly higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is great and it works very well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a very nice beer and a great example of the style, it had all the aspects that it was hoping it would have from it's description and they all worked very well together. This beer has good drinkability, I could drink a couple, especially on a cold day. What I like the most about this beer is the taste and mouthfeel, they were very nice and the highlights of this beer. What I like the least about this beer is nothing, there isn't anything that I would change. I would buy this beer again if they make it again and I would recommend it to anyone who likes chocolate and lactose in their stouts. All in all I was very happy with this beer and a little impressed, it came together to make for a very tasty and unique stout. It's not my favorite Short's beer, but it is a very nice example of the style. Great job guys, this is one tasty Stout.
