Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Bottle received as an extra in an in person trade with iceicebaby at the Bullfrog Brewery Frambozen release party this past Friday. Thank you very much for being an awesome trader!

Appearance: hazy sunrise orange burst body with a 1 finger white crown. Not much retention but some swirls of lacing.

Smell: Loads of bitter floral hops along with some citrus hops but they smell more like mango to me than grapefruit or orange.

Taste: Lots of bitter hops, a touch of tropical fruit, and a tiny dash of sweet malt.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied but a bit chewy. Acceptable level of carbonation.

Drinkability: Not bad but it would have got higher marks if the hops weren't so bitter. Don't get me wrong, bitterness is something I LOVE but it does take away from the "drinkability" factor.

UPDATE: I found that like most IPA's, the flavor profile of this brew shifts considerably as it ages. As expected, the hop bitterness recedes and the sweet malt heightens.

This one has been on my 'wants' list forever...seriously. Luckily heliosphann was able to hook me up, thanks man!

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip. There is an area for freshness dating, but nothing is marked.

Pours a beautiful hazy orange hue with a frothy two finger off-white colored head. Excellent lacing with this, thick webbing grips the sides of the glass throughout. Smell is dripping with sweet floral hops, pine, and citrus. Underneath all the deliciousness is a touch of caramel malt and some dirty earth. Taste begins with bitter grapefruit and sticky spruce. Midway a good dose of bready malts and stinging orange zest. Aftertaste has more sticky, gooey hops with a solid bitter-dry backbone. Medium bodied with a syrupy feel and steady carbonation. One of the better IPA's I've had as of late, glad I have more :) Thanks again Scott!

Carefully poured from a 12oz into a tulip.

A: Pours a clear golden yellow color with a white head that has left behind solid lacing.

S: Loads of citrus hops mostly grapefruit and orange. Sweet malt becomes stronger as the beer warms. Great strong nose with no

T: Tastes of pine and citrus mingle with a bready, malty sweetness; a familiar taste of yeast is also present. Strong bitter aftertaste.

M: This beer has a medium body with a fair amount of carbonation. Smooth with a bit of bite from the carbonation.

D: Good drinkability, but the lingering bitterness is almost too much... almost

Served this 12 oz. brown bottle in a Sam Adams glass. No date. The body was hazy and the color was yellow/butterscotch. The head was modest despite a vigorous pour. Creamy yellowish/tan that settles to a fine film.

The smell was sweet citrus and gritty organic leafiness. Pungent earthiness. Yummy.

The taste was slightly sweet and citrusy up front but finished with a nice biting bitterness. Green and drying. I have wanted to try this for a while and it does live up to the hype. Very well made and very drinkable. Classic AIPA.

The mouthfeel was medium to light in body. On the light side in the carbonation department.

Served in a pint glass. Bottled on 11/03/2014.

Pours a nice orange with 1 finger of soapy white head the dissipates leaving a thin ring around the edges. Wonderful aromas of juicy grapefruit, pineapple upside down cake, oranges, and shortbread. Taste is malty upfront almost cake like then finishes with a piney hop bitterness that lingers slightly. Light body with a hint of carbonation.

Overall a top notch brew. A staple IPA for hopheads. Its up there with some of the best IPA's the midwest has to offer.

Cheers!

Thanks to Tyson for the chance to finally sample some Short's beer.

A - Clear dark orange in color with a two finger foamy off-white head. Head quickly fades and leaves a thin cap on the beer.

S - Tropical hop aroma dominates the nose. Lots of pineapple and maybe even a little papaya. Candied fruit sweetness strengthens in the nose as the beer warms.

T - Pure hops straight off the bat. Lots of tropical tastes mixed in with a hint of citrus fruits. Pineapple, mango, and grapefruit. Just a hint of biscuity malt sweetness. I was expecting a little more malty sweetness due to the darker color, but this is all hops. Tasteful bitterness.

M/D - Medium bodied with great drinkability. Carbonation is on the lower side. Alcohol is well masked and bitterness is present but not mouth wreking.

Tasty average ipa. Nothing special or different. Very refreshing, something you can drink more than just a few if you want too.

Big thanks to enelson for including this as an extra in a past trade! Served from bottle into a Stone nonic. Poured hazy yellow-orange with a massive four finger off-white head that subsided to two fingers worth very slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, subtle bitter hop, and grapefruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, citrus hop, and grapefruit. It had a light feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a very nicely balanced and tasty IPA. Had a very nice flavor and aroma to it. This one went down quite easily with my dinner. This one is totally worth seeking out and trying. Nice job Short's!

12 oz. bottle. Nice cloudy copper colored brew, with a thick off white head. The head retention is great. Near the end of the beer, there were some great sheets of lace covering the sides of the glass.

Bold citrus and pine hop aroma. A bit of caramel malt in the background, but make no mistake, this is one-sided.

Nice toasty, caramel malt flavor, followed by citrusy and piney flavors. Solid amount of bitterness, without being harsh. Lingering orange and peach flavor.

Good body. Very drinkable. Very solid.

Had more than a few of pints at the brewpub and decided to bring a growler home for one obvious reason....its delicious!

Has a beautiful foamy head, lots of lacing and very good retention. A hazy yellowish orange color.

Smells of grapefruit, pine and a biscuity maltiness.

Tastes great, loads of hop bitterness, grapefruit, pine and some malt to back things up. I really did enjoy this IPA, very drinkable.

Pours a clear, golden color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong floral hops, slight sweet malt, Euro malt, slight piney hops, alcohol, and citrus (grapefruit). Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp with an average carbonation level. There is also a dryness and the bitterness level is rather high. Tastes of strong floral hops, slight piney hops, hint of citrus hops, alcohol, hint of yeast, slight sweet malt, and hint of earthy malt. Overall, a good appearance and aroma, the dryness hurts the feel, and good body.

Look is a cloudy light brown golden color. Small amount of lacing left behind a thin head. Strong tiny carbonated bubbles continually rising. Smell is as it's named, very strong flower aroma. There is a slight skunky smell that I find very pleasing. Taste just as you would expect. Very floral feel with mild malt kick. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Very easy to enjoy this beer if you are in the mood for a light crisp pale ale.

Thanks go out to newtonty to sharing this beer with me. 12 ounce brown bottle with a freshness chart, but not stamped correctly.

Pours a slightly cloudy, orangey to dark brass with a light tan, creamy ¾ inch head. Lacing is great, leaving thick webbing around the edges of my imperial pint. The remaining head settles to a 1/16 inch fizz on top.

Smells of pineapple, grapefruit and citrus hops. Light, caramel hops are in the nose, as well.

Medium to thick bodied and waxy on the tongue. Hops are scathing and assaulting on the tongue for the first few seconds - nice... After the rush of spicy, poignant hops, it mellows with a nice wave of semi-sweet malts.

Very drinkable, try this one!

One of four 12 oz Short's bottles I found in Chicago recently while in town. I was very lucky.

A - Pours a cloudy, glow-in-the-dark orange with a one finger head.

S - Bright, fresh, piney hops - very little malt presence.

T&M - This is the most impressive of the Short's lineup that I've had so far. Very nice blast of fresh, dry hop flavor on top of a light body. Carbonation fits well, and there is a lot more taste than I would expect from a normal IPA. Borders on unbalanced, but a hop-lover will enjoy the showcase.

D - Often as intensity of flavor increases, drinkability suffers. Not the case here. I am enjoying this one and wishing I had another.

Great IPA here--pours a very pretty spun copper color with thick white head that laces nicely. Smell is largely citrus hops, but also some pine notes and caramel malt sneaks in there too. Taste has a strong kick of hop bitterness, with some big pine notes. Floral and citrus notes play a bit of a supporting role to the hop bill here. Nice pale and caramel malt too, though this one is definitely a hop monster when fresh. MF is medium bodied, dry on the finish, and a nice amount of carbonation keeps things moving. An easy drinking IPA, I might lump it in a group with Two-Hearted. Glad to try it!

A - Golden Burnt Orange. 3 full fingers of smooth and foamy head. Nice lacing and retention rings as it goes down.

S - - nice fruity grapefruit smell.

T - Hoppy lupa licious! Delicious american IPA. Well done!

M - nice balance - smooth feel as it goes down.

O - I rate this one of my favorite american IPA's in Michigan. It is right up there with the best of them.
