Short's Huma Lupa Licious India Pale AleShort's Huma Lupa Licious India Pale Ale

Brewed by:
Short's Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Poured into a pint glass from a bottle. Pours semi cloudy orange with a small white head. Smells of citrus and floral hops, very nice. Tastes of nice grain with a sweet citrus and slightly earthy hops. Beer is light bodied and easily drinkable, dangerously so, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

Poured into a teku pint. Bottom of can says 08/16/16.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 3/4 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves large clots behind.

S- Refreshing aroma of piney, herbal hops that also has a bit of citrus going on and some sweet cereal grain malt.

T- Great synthesis of flavor with the vegetal but still somewhat fruity hop flavor jiving with the sweetness of the malt all while being accentuated by the higher level of bitterness. The bitterness also provides some dryness to offset the sweetness of the malt. Lots of resinous quality and the bitterness stays solid throughout the entire drink.

M- Sharp from the hops with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- You can taste the 140 IBUs but it works within the construct of the flavor profile. Tasty stuff and something I would certainly recommend to someone looking for an IPA with a palate wrecking type of bitterness.

Amber colors with a hint of light brown in it. Head was around 1/4". Very floral hop aroma, they went big on the bittering stage so much I think it crept into the nose.

Taste just amps bitterness up. Not all grapefruit, there is some pine and something else that gives it a little more levity, combined with not dripping it all over with crystal malt. They call it complex, perhaps there is something to that. There's a bitter burn to it for sure.

12oz bottle. Pours a semi hazy brownish gold color with a half inch of head. Fair amount of lacing. The aroma is floral with crackery malts and pine. A bit earthy. The taste is floral and herbal hops. Bitter pine towards the middle with bready, toasted malts and more pine bitterness at the finish. Floral aftertaste. Creamy mouthfeel with some mild alcohol burn. Overall, a bitter IPA I'd have again.

You know, I was beginning to sour on pale ales and IPAs. It's not that I don't like the styles; it's just that so many neophyte brewers have been putting out so many half-assed offerings that I'd just about given up. But Short's has restored my faith somewhat. Here goes:

A: Good. Very turbid, but the effervescence - both in the body and in the head - is good. Lacing is good, too.

S: Lots of pine mixed with lot of grapefruit. Also a fair amount of caramel malt. The malt serves as a good compliment to the hops. I like it a lot. Very good hop:malt ratio.

T: Fairly dank, but not overpowering. The beer is very well balanced between malt and hops. Can taste pine, grapefruit (more so in the taste than in the scent), and honeyed malt. Very well balanced.

F: Excellent. Thick and sticky.

O: A great American IPA. I guess I won't have to stick to Sierra Nevada and Firestone Walker after all.

-spiegelau ipa glass. A complex malt and hop theme in your mouth.

A: Oxidized orange, with a dense nature, has a frothy, peanut shell colored head of 0.5 inches. Good holding pattern, but provides a weak lacing display on vessel. Slow and steady rise of macro-bubbles.

S: Sugary grapefruit on the nose, with some pine support and sweet malt backing things up. Spicy tangerine and tropical fruit hops, with some dank herbaceous notes and tart orange. Raw citrus with an overall decent level of awareness.

T: The flavor had the support of sugary malt balanced by a tart grapefruit and dry orange offering. Tart tropical hop fruitiness, with dank herbaceous mention and pine hops. Floral grapefruit comes in mid-palate and provides a nice lingering effect on the finish of moderate bitterness. Dry flowery bite coats the tongue after each swallow.

M: Good crispness, some sticky malt and pine hop resins coat the tongue. Dry and bitter feel, mid range body weight.

O: The bitterness and enjoyment increases deeper into the drink demanding and keeping your attention to the last sip. Nice spectrum of hop flavors from tart tropical to your grapefruit-pine west coast influence. Sticky malt residue with a nice flavor upfront finishing with a big dry hop wallop. Easy outstanding mention.

My neighbor brought this to my moving party. It poured a clear copper with white head that is leaving a lace. The scent is bitter hop. The taste is English leaning...very bitter through. The Mouthfeel was fuller in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a good beer and worth a try.

The malt backbone is very prominent in this IPA. Enough so that the ale has a sweet, slick mouthfeel, and it leaves sticky lacings throughout the glass. I would almost think they brewed it with honey. It's hop profile is very present as well. Pungent, earthy, piney, bitter hops. It's a unique IPA. It's not like the rest of 'em. And I like that about it. It's more malt-forward than I was expecting it to be, but it still has all the hops I want.

Very solid offering from a very underrated brewery!

Poured into a regular pint glass and a small amount of foam was to be head. The beer was tasty but a little bitter. Not sure I could drink more than one of these bitter bad boys. Bitter bitter bitter.

I'd drink it again. Did I say it was bitter?

Pours a very chill-hazed gold. The aroma seemed fine with pine notes and citrus. Then the first taste revealed this "whang" that I will not be able to properly identify but it definitely isn't nice. I think of dirty mop water or even sewer gas. Rotting vegetables, perhaps. It's bitter for sure but I could take that if it was clean-tasting. Drain pour for sure. This will be my last Short's. Too many misses for the few hits.

First impression is a toffee like maltiness....that fades quickly and is hard to find again as the onlslaught of hops hits...140 IBU's and this one feels like it. Pine, unsweetened grapefruit on the flavor...pine and tobacco on the aroma...

A no holds barred IPA loaded with bitterness. Too sharp for my tastes but some will really enjoy the edge to this.

Pours a hazy light copper color with a finger of head. The nose is more malty than hoppy. The malt bill remains potent in the flavor profile but the hop bitterness asserts itself nicely on the finish.

This was a big disappointment for me. The nose is rotten mint with hints of malt - unfortunately the taste follows: an odd mix of mint, celery, and malt. Feel is on the thin side. I tried two different bottles to see if I just got a bad one - nope. Not for me.

This is a fantastic IPA. The hops showcase one of the most earthy and floral sweet smelling and tasting IPAs I've had to date. Some bitterness in the finish but not enough to make it too much. Was a really nice welcome change in taste for an IPA. Definitely will try to find Shorts again if I'm out of state.

This beer pours a murky golden color with minimal head. The nose has a nice citrus aroma. It is not overwhelming. The taste is somewhat mellow on the hops at first, then the bite of the hops kicks in. Delicious, and I do enjoy the greater distribution of Shorts.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into an IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of white head with decent retention.

Smell: An earthy and juicy hop forward aroma with a scent of citrus and grass. Citrus hop scent of grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine, and lemon. Earthy hop scent of grass and pine. Malt hints of caramel, grains, and cracker with yeast. A pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, an earthy and juicy hop forward taste with notes of citrus fruit and grass. Citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, and tangerine. Earthy hop notes of grass and pine along with some vegetal notes. Backing malt notes of caramel, grains, and cracker along with some yeast.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy and somewhat oily with a drying finish.

Overall: A very good IPA. Nice mix of juicy citrus and grassy hop flavor.

T - Nicely hoped. Resinous, grapefruit rind, a bit of grassy. 4.25

It's good, don't get me wrong, but I feel like this is one of those IPAs that takes the spirit of bitterness in beer and just takes it too far. It's got flavor and body, and its gorgeous, but the hops dominate in an uncomfortable way. It's a good beer, but that really gets my goat and its a trend in American beer I don't appreciate.

Orangish yellow in color with a thick, hazy, murky appearance. Poured with a short, sopy, bright white foam with decent retention. Medium high hop aromas: light floral, lemon rind, mint and vegetable. Medium bodied with light, creamy medium carbonation. Light warming sensation near the fiinish. Medium high hop herbal and mint hop flavors with floral notes. High hop bitterness powers through the middle to the end. Finished dryly with lingering herbal hop bitterness. This was bottled in February and had a heavy vegetal aroma and flavor when samples in March. A few months have helped temper the vegetal character, but it is still present. The herbal minty character provides a fresh flavor, but the bitterness is a touch high and out of balance for me.

I do not like to give bad reviews. Poured from 12oz bottle into a goblet. Medium Amber color with decent head and lacing. Moderate bread and mild citrus notes. Mixed malt and hop flavors. Very unpleasant bitter aftertaste. Too much malt for an IPA. Not a beer I can recommend.

On draft at Applebee’s just north of Grand Rapids
Server didn’t know anything about the beer except it was from Shorts, was named Humpalicious, and was supposed to be hoppy
Served in a 20 oz weizen glass, fortunately not frosted
Aroma – weak citrus, dies out
Head chopped at the bar, what remained was < two cm, off white, creamy with rocks
Lacing excellent – wide rings of tiny bubbles
Body medium yellow, clear, effervescent
Flavor – basically begins bitter without much flavor, ends bitter with an aromatic chemical aftertaste
Palate medium, watery, lively carbonation

Overall, not very appealing. Ended up leaving about six ounces that I couldn’t force down. Is it a bad beer? Don’t know how fresh it was since they sell mostly BMC stuff. I’ll try it again when I can get it at a known freshness level. For now:

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. bottled on 2/5/16, so 3 months old. kudos on the clear freshness dating.

all over the place with the look on this one. body is a hazy practically murky orange yellow. decent size white head which shrinks somewhat but maintains a solid 1/4 inch covering. lacing is excellent.

not getting much on the nose except a slight dankness.

however, the taste on this one is top notch. great hop bite on the tongue despite being 3 months on. and a strong pepper taste in the back of the mouth. cant detect any citrusy flavors at all, which is quite refreshing.

mouth is a solid medium, with a slightly sour finish.

overall, a really enjoyable style ipa. sorry i only picked up a single, looking forward to next time.

Got my first sixer at Meijer's in Stevensville, Michigan on 5/3/16 on sale for $8.49. Drank the first one that night. Very solid India Pale Ale. Could be considered an excellent daily drinker if I could it for that price every time.

Color good and cloudy light Amber. Smell of, get this....peanuts and dress grass. Taste hits you in the hoppy section of your tongue. A hop-explosion to the maxx. Very well crafted. Not over powering or under whelming. Shorts has piqued my interest.

A - Lovely. Orange body, some haze. A off-white pillow of a head. Persistent. Great lacing.

S - Pine, stone fruit, a bit dank. Hop and more hop.

T - Smacks you in the face with dank, bitter hop notes. Hints of the pine, fruit, and pleasure, a bit of creaminess in the middle, but the close blows things out with a strong uppercut.

M - Sticky crunch open, dry and building back. Punishing.

O - Super hop American IPA, with huge and bold flavors. There are great notes here, but the close is brutal. Nothing is surprising, and it hits the marks you'd expect. But oh my is this one a wrecker.
