Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

2 for 2 from this brewery - first, Space Rock was surprisingly fantastic, at least in it's smell, though the taste fell short (no pun intended). This one is more balanced in its qualities: overall, very good, though not quite legendary. Something about that sweet bready flavor and deep, piney malt with some grapefruit and vegetable flavors just blends together into something eminently drinkable and easy to love. It's Shorts season - bring on the fine weather!

This is a good IPA. On the lighter side, but heavy on the malt, you can tell this one is made with experienced and living hands. Nothing stands out to put it in the exceptional category, but very well done. A heartfelt thumbs up!

Look is a cloudy light brown golden color. Small amount of lacing left behind a thin head. Strong tiny carbonated bubbles continually rising. Smell is as it's named, very strong flower aroma. There is a slight skunky smell that I find very pleasing. Taste just as you would expect. Very floral feel with mild malt kick. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Very easy to enjoy this beer if you are in the mood for a light crisp pale ale.

Gold amber, moderate frothy head, with lacing like an ancient castle's worth of cobwebs.

Smells like raw broccoli, body odor, and pine. As it warms, it even starts to smell like cooked peas with salt and pepper.

Tastes like asparagus covered in resin.

This sucker is very bitter. I can see this satisfying an elite few who have survived many generations of consuming poisonous plants. I, however, find this to be a very disturbingly off-putting beer.

IPA of the bitterest variety. No dry hopping detected - just bitterness and bready malt. I don't understand the high praise as I literally get none of the hop forwardness expected from top-tier American IPAs. As for the qualities noone really cares about: Appearance and mouthfeel: Wet and yellow. Nailed it!

Alas, I'll finish this and place this bottled disappointment behind me.

Another Short's winner! This lovely AIPA does it all.

It's a thick yellow with a fine but pronounced head. The aroma is a thick hops and malt smell. Any thick would be stanky.

The taste is a bitter malt flavor. Big on both hops and malts, this is a lot of flavor for the price!

Shorts has shown me that they are a quality brewer.

12 oz. bottle, bottled on 02/23/2016 printed on the bottleneck. My first beer from Short's Brewing Company, excited to finally see these appearing in Illinois.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - A rich golden orange body, aptly carbonated, with some nice light sediment floating in the glass. Two fingers of thick frothy soapy white head with good staying power, leaves good fluffy lacing on the glass. Looks very nice per the style.

S - An earthy, herbal, grassy nose. Subtle notes of skunk, pine, grass, and lemon zest. Not a terribly piney / resinous / hop forward aroma, especially for a moderately high abv IPA, but it smells good, fresh, and appealing.

T - Taste is a few notches up from the nose: piney, resinous, & bitter. Has some West Coast style IPA attributes to it, especially with the big bitterness. Juicy, piney, bitter, & resinous, with lots of hoppy goodness.

M - Feel is juicy, smooth, easy-drinking. Dry, piney, & resinous hops on the palate. Very big bitterness on this one, but very drinkable.

Overall, a nice introduction to Short's Brewing for me. I look forward to trying many more beers from this brewery.

Bottled 3/7 and just distrubuted to Ohio this week.

Fantastic looking beer. A clear, orange tinted gold. Huge Dawn dish soap head hangs on forever, and clings to the glass everywhere.

Aroma is nothing to write home about. Some pungent, spicey citrus hops, and a stale biscuity malt base.

The taste is much more impressive. Seemingly different levels of malt grains from biscuit/bready through pale, and caramel. Very distinct flavors an very needed because the hops are super assertive. Grapefruit, a bit of orange rind, but much more in the way of green pine. Very, very bitter, but sharp/clean then gone for the most part. I would guess this to be in the 100 IBU range.

Body flirts with the imperial category. Not real drying for what I would have guessed based on flavor.

An interesting and fairly unique balance of flavors. This beer is kind of Jeckyl and Hyde for me. Although it is nicely balanced, it seems to be all over the place. So are my scores. Not a typical American IPA, but a very good one.

Bottled on 3/7/16. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours golden with a subtle haze; small white head that fades leaving nice retention and solid lacing. The aromas are subtle with some floral notes. Hints of pine and citrus as well. Bready cracker malts are there too along with some subtle hints of caramel. The flavors are pretty bold. Lots of fresh pine needles along with some pine resin. Grapefruit is there along with some lemon and lime. Lots of fresh grass too. Very sharp and clean bitterness. It's pretty refreshing. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with very active carbonation. It's smooth and easy to drink.

This is a nice IPA. It isn't one of my new personal favorites, but it's enjoyable stuff and fun to drink.

Pours hazy gold, with a big fluffy white head. It has an earthy aroma with and equal amount of malt and hops. The taste is just as balanced and quite complex. I've had a lot of IPAs and this one definitely stands out as a little bit different. Super complex, malty with a nice resiny hop bite but one that doesn't overwhelm. I recommend giving this one a try.

A sticky, resinous, palate-wrecker of a beer. Glad I finally got to try this one. Nice balance of malt for the insane IBU. The only thing that was a little odd on his one was the malt. Left a sort of peanut buttery aftertaste - nutty and biscuity. Interesting, intense and earthy IPA. A hop head's dream. Worth seeking out, and I'll be buying a sixer in the near future.

Hazy golden lively carbonation. Nice lacing. Lots of grain notes only faint hops off the nose. Hoppy pine. Prickly almost to a fault. Very home brew quality. Late addition hips are a bit of a nuisance on this beer. The nose is almost off putting. I'll tell you though after it warms s but and the palate is a little wrecked it's not bad. As much malt it's too Grainy on the smell and because of the over bittering hops it's a little hard to drink more than one. I think if they scaled this back and added a little more balance on this it would be better. Not bad

Bottled on 2/26/2016. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. The aroma is fantastic, at first whiff I get a lot of the citrusy hops, but I'm also picking up a dose of fresh grainy malt. The taste again is a balance more heavily on the hop side with the hops creating a lingering bitterness on top of a nice malt backbone that is balanced nicely with the hops. Overall, this is a really nice IPA that I enjoyed.

12 oz bottle poured into an IPA glass. From a six-pack. First shipment to reach PA from what I am told.

L - hazy golden amber color. Foamy head with some lacing down the glass. Foam gripping the glass when swirled around.

S - spent grain, thick resin hops. Notes of peanut butter from the malt, citrus pine hop character.

T - malt up front, full of hops in the rest of the taste. Thick hop resin taste that coats the tongue.

F - Light in body. Easy to drink, a little boozy but more hop resin.

O - this is almost like it came out of some homebrewer's garage brewery. Shorts just made its way to Pennsylvania to try out distribution and I have been seeing more bars carrying their product. Very good IPA for fans of the style. I love the thick resiny hop character. Must try, Cheers!

Had at slap shotz in Detroit airport.
A: incredible lacing, deep orange gold body color, carbonation, 2 finger foam head
S: citrus fruits and some pine
M: medium body with some sticky resin on tongue
T: citrus, grapefruit rind powerful up front with a slow fade to pine resin but not overpowering.
O: really great solid brew for hop heads, will drink again

Six pack of bottles. Less than a month old.

Aroma - had a nice blast of citrus and pineapple immediately after pouring. That disappeared quickly and left behind mostly earthy (dirt) hops with mild floral. SO4 is a bit heavy in the aroma, but fine in the flavor.

Taste - grapefruit and green apple initially with an earthy finish. Meh...

Overall - my first Short's beer. Not too impressive for a flagship brew. Not bad. Wouldn't buy it again.

Aroma is earthy, floral, and piney. Taste follows, with some citrus notes in there as well. Pretty malty for an ipa bordering on imperial but still a nice hop bite.

We recently began getting distro of Short's B.C. beers here in south-central PA & I am pretty excited about it! I have known those guys for years, between BA fests in BOS & my (usually) annual excursion to Madison, WI for the GTMW. I don't care if they are in bottles since I never expected them to come to me!

From the bottle: "A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth"[.]"; "Handmade by people who care. (tm)"

This is my sixth bottle of theirs and I am really enjoying Pop!ping the caps! I have a local artist who makes all sorts of things out of spent caps & so I am putting the Short's caps aside especially for a clear resin coaster. In the interim, I employed a heavy-handed pour, creating three fingers of dense, rocky, French Vanilla-colored head with great retention. I watched in awe as it slid downwards, leaving heavy, sticky lacing in its wake. Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7), which led to a visit from the Gelt Gang of Midas, Croesus & Mammon, all vying for a taste. Nose was deeply citrusy with loads of grapefruit notes, making my mouth water & reminding me that I am a self-described/avowed hophead. The monkey on my back does not screech & howl like he used to, but he is still there, giving me the occasional jones, like right now! Mouthfeel was medium. The theme park is now open! Malt?!? Yeah, if you say so! Man, this was like a hot shot of hops, mainlined & presented for my drinking pleasure! It is said that the critical mistake that many lapsed junkies make is returning to the same dosage at which they left off, usually leading to a fatal O.D. Not me, man! This perked me right up in ways that morning coffee can only dream. It was definitely hoppy with a grapefruit-citrus bitterness and a whole-flower freshness that is unbeatable! I listened as a server told a customer that she is not into this beer for all of the reasons that I just outlined. I simply smiled a sweet smile & promptly ordered one for myself. I have to say, between this one & Soft Parade, these were the causes of my excitement! The others are gravy on the biscuits, but those two drive the train. Finish was dry, bitter, flowery and everything that I want in an AIPA. Q: At what point WRT ABV does it become a DIPA? Curiosity is all.

Opened about two weeks after bottling. Mildly hazy orange color with a few fingers of airy off-white head. Surprisingly faint aroma, sweet, with a definite nuttiness to it, and just a hint of honey, pine and orange. The nuttiness continues to the flavor, with a little butter along with it, followed by a very bitter aftertaste. Slightly creamy and fairly heavy bodied for the style. I like malty IPAs, and had high hopes for this one, but that whole butter-nut thing isn't doing it for me at all.

Egg shell white head, laces well, beer is fairly hazy in the glass and tangerine orange in color. Very attractive.

Unsure of the age of this bottle but hop aromas are quite assertive. Some citrus aromas cling to my nose, grapefruit and orange among them. More interestingly, there's a pretty substantial sweet malt aroma. Anyone that has smelled wort will know what I'm talking about. Not surprised to see the IBU number for this beer at a ridiculous 140, given the robust malt base used here. Malts have a toffee note as well, more pronounced than just about any other regular IPA I can think of. It kind of smells like an imperial, to be honest.

Flavor is not necessarily sweet but there are residual sugars here that are juxtaposed by the big citrusy hop bite. Some pine in those hops as well, which makes this easier to drink than it would be otherwise. Finishes pretty dry, thankfully the sweet ripe fruit aroma and malty front end don't have the sticky sweet finish that double IPAs can often have, this is a sub-8% beer after all.

Very tasty, recommended for IPA fans that want a more substantial than is typical IPA but don't want the ABV overload of a double. Would love to try a double from Shorts Brewing to see what they do with that.

140 IBU advertized. i believe it, this one is not for the faint of heart, though more drinkable than other IBU landmines out there, like Resin, IMVHO. the malts do balance this one out. nice floral nose too.

A - Slightly less than a finger's worth of crisp off white colored head... Decent retention that once receded leaves a full veil of lacing on moderate collar... A light to moderate bite of slightly sluggish carbonation... The color teeters between pale amber and butterscotch... A lit bit of lacing clings to the sides of the glass...

S - A pleasant array of hops greets the nose... Earthy... Dank... Slightly fruity... A sweet malt base that mixes caramel and toffee lie a bit beneath the surface... Simple, straight forward and very effective...

T - A nice mix of the aforementioned hops and malt compliment each other very nicely at the start... That is followed by an intensely bitter floral hop finish that lingers and lingers and lingers... Perhaps even some subtle minty notes on the finish...

M - Medium bodied... Light to medium carbonation... Starts lush and slightly chewy... The finish is dry...

D - I'm a self proclaimed hop head like most here, but this proves to be bit too intense for my liking to the point it comes slightly off putting... While it grew on me a bit over the session, overall this one is a bit less than the sum of its parts...
