Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Been looking forward to this one for a long time. Courtesy of glazeman.

A - Great looking IPA. Light burnt orange with a one finger head with little retention. Good lacing, particularly for a single IPA.

S - Citrus hops - oranges, lemon, and a hint of alcohol.

T - Pretty average tasting beer in my opinion. Oranges and apricots up front with a slight malt backbone. The malts are a little bit sugary, almost medicinal. Finishes quite bitter followed by a hint of nuttiness. The nutty finish became a bit more pronounced as the beer warmed. Letting this one warm up a bit is a good idea.

M - Decent mouthfeel - typical for an IPA. Good carbonation. Pretty thin, not too sticky.

D - Very drinkable beer. Not a whole lot of complexity going on with the smell or the taste. All in all, this is your typical IPA. But that being said, a typical IPA is better than what most people have in their mugs, so this is a beer I would try again if it's available. However, I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to seek it out.

Amber hued with fantastic clarity. I get just a slight bit of head that covers most of the top of this beer. Intense tropical to citrus hop aroma. Perhaps a touch of orange soda in the nose?! That is an odd but hop forward flavor. I get the citrus hop bitterness with a strong light malt backbone, but the flavors seem to clash somehow. Texture is moderately carbonated and the bitterness pricks your tongue.

Thanks to ShogoKawada for spreading the Short's! Poured from a 12oz bottle into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

A tangerine to gold gradient fills the glass - hazy but rather pale at the same time, suggesting a glimmer of coral in the color as well. A thin ivory slick forms a web across the surface, and is ringed by a weak but lasting collar. Nice sandy lacing leaves a fine pattern behind.

Muted hops in the nose - resinous yet subdued, acidic yet flat.

Dry herbal palate entry, moderately bitter, growing more earthen in nature into the finish. Faint cracker, grass, and burnt sugar notes round out the profile. Delicate malt notes. Well crafted, but not especially flavorful.

Nicely attenuated, moderately carbonated, crisp, and refreshing.

Hops can suggest so many other flavors, yet this beer brings to mind nothing in particular. Meh.

Tasted from 12oz bottle. Pours bright orange with a frothy white head. Nice hoppy pine resin aroma with some cereal malt. As the beer warms, some fruiteness becomes apparent. On the front of the palate, the flavor shows off the caramel and cereal malts, but on the middle and back of the palate, this beer belongs to the hops. The hops flavor begins fruity but ends with grapefruit bitterness as expected. The body fairly light with a somewhat thin texture. The carbonation is average, and the finish is super bitter and super long. This is a good IPA, but slightly out of balance.
