Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Picked up a 6 pack in Ann Arbor this past weekend.
Numbers on the bottle read: 4121168102114, what ever that means. I just hope its fresh.

A- About medium in color for an IPA. Quite cloudy. I ranges from pale gold in the highlights to a burnt orange in the thick parts of the glass. Sticky, average sized head sticks around heartily and leaves rings of lace.

S- Certainly smells fresh. Lots of candy like citrus hops. Its very tropical and "midwestern". I love this style of IPA the most. Pineapple, mango, flowers, pollen, pine. It smells like there is cascade in here. The malt bill doesnt do a whole lot to the smell.

T- Pretty strongly hopped and quite bitter but the malts kick in and let you know this isnt an Imperial. Mostly bitter and piney hops. Its quite bitter throughout. This isnt necessarily what I am looking for in this beer at this time. I would like to see more fruits and a bit of a toning down on the bitterness.

M- Decent mouthfeel but maybe a touch too watery. Its really just nothing special in the feel.

D- The intense bitterness is hurting the drinkability right now. The lower ABV should allow this beer to be really drinkable but the bitterness is kinda wrecking it for me right now. This is a beer you have to be in the mood for.

This is the first time me drinking the Huma Lupa Licious. I picked a bottle up at Sicilianos in Grand Rapids, Michigan while making my own 6-pack. I have always preferred an IPA over about just anything. Although this is not on my best IPA list of 10, it is in the vicinity of about the 15th one.

A - A solid golden-orange color that has a quick dissipating head
S - A light citrus smell
T - A light taste of malt and a very strong hop presence is felt right away. Not enough to overwhelm but enough to know that there, the bitterness is very noticeable. This beer has double of some of my favorite IPA's
M - My tongue starts to tingle at first and then the taste of citrus comes in. A strong aftertaste of grapefruit remains in my mouth.
O - A very good IPA that holds its own to people who prefer the higher IBU rating. Not in the near future but I do see myself getting more of this beer.

A: Hazy, Medium amber, with a blush pink glow about it. The head is white, and consists mostly of larger bubbles.

S: Nice American hop aroma. Grass and Pine aroma in there.

T: Grass and pine shine through in the taste. It smacks you with a pine slap right away, followed by a slight caramel sweetness. The finish is pure bitter hops. The bitterness in this just lasts and lasts.

M: Medium in body, the carbonation is laking just a bit. There is definitely an oily quality to this that really helps the hops linger on.

D: A good hoppy beer for when you need a bitter kick. Not perfect, but a very hoppy brew to satisfy your hop craving.

Color is a light brown with a haze similar to "The Liberator" making it have a dirty look. Head is a 1/2 inch and lacing is good and sticky. Smells of bittering hops yet has a nice balance to it. Taste isn't as great as expected but looking at the IBU's I can understand the assault. Mouth feel is medium and it really coats the mouth.

Overall I like my IPA's more balanced and even though this was more drinkable than "The Liberator" it still fell short for me and was palate numbing bitter. Will not get again.

Pours a hazy golden, minimal head, some lacing.

Smells nice, lots of piney hops.

Pine and grapefruit heavy in the taste, supported by a malty base.

Mouthfeel somewhat resinous. Medium carbonation.

Strong pine bite on this one; nice and flavorful.

A: Pours a golden honey color with a small white head that leaves a bit of lacing.

S: The scent is very refreshing, it has some nice citrus notes to it with floral hop undertones.

T: The taste upfront is an explosion of bitters, the hoppy bitters are present throughout and well after. However, the citrus and the malts aren't really present at all. The bitters overpower pretty much all of the flavors that should be present.

M: Light/medium bodied with average carbonation. Very bitter feel throughout, a bit of a resin feel also.

D: I like the hop explosion present in this beer, but to me, the flavor stops there. The scent is so good and I was expecting a lot more out of this, not just major bitters. It's a good beer, but not a must have.

A- Slightly cloudy, golden brown or a dirty orange/gold.
S- citrusy and maybe a slight caramel
T- Completely follows the aroma, has a bittersweet taste kinda fruity and a very strong aftertaste. Quite Lingering
M- Crisp, medium carbonation, easy downfall with strong after feel.
*My overall is defiantly a thumbs up! well suited for different occasion (for the people who enjoy higher IBU) -very good IPA.
overall a good beer, I definitely enjoyed it!

12oz bottle - I don't know if I can contain a whole theme park in my mouth... thanks to Roke87 for the cross-continent trade.

This beer pours a cloudy medium golden orange colour, with one beefy finger of creamy, foamy ecru head, which leaves a decent forest profile of lace around the glass in its wake. It smells of bitterly fragrant citrus and pine hops, and dry, dusty, cracker grain. The taste is bitter pine and citrus rind hops, and musty, crackery malt. Only a slight warming is perceptible, given the ABV. The carbonation is moderate, and sprightly, the body light, and surprisingly quite smooth. It finishes fairly clean, the bitter citrus/grass hops muscling out the weaker grain representation.

A good, hoppy IPA, with what I'm beginning to see as a Midwest hop profile trend (at least to samples shipped way out West) - less grapefruit, more grassy, herbal, but bitter all the same. Enjoyable, and very drinkable, obfuscated alcohol aside.

This is a good IPA. On the lighter side, but heavy on the malt, you can tell this one is made with experienced and living hands. Nothing stands out to put it in the exceptional category, but very well done. A heartfelt thumbs up!

12 oz. bottle, bottled on 02/23/2016 printed on the bottleneck. My first beer from Short's Brewing Company, excited to finally see these appearing in Illinois.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - A rich golden orange body, aptly carbonated, with some nice light sediment floating in the glass. Two fingers of thick frothy soapy white head with good staying power, leaves good fluffy lacing on the glass. Looks very nice per the style.

S - An earthy, herbal, grassy nose. Subtle notes of skunk, pine, grass, and lemon zest. Not a terribly piney / resinous / hop forward aroma, especially for a moderately high abv IPA, but it smells good, fresh, and appealing.

T - Taste is a few notches up from the nose: piney, resinous, & bitter. Has some West Coast style IPA attributes to it, especially with the big bitterness. Juicy, piney, bitter, & resinous, with lots of hoppy goodness.

M - Feel is juicy, smooth, easy-drinking. Dry, piney, & resinous hops on the palate. Very big bitterness on this one, but very drinkable.

Overall, a nice introduction to Short's Brewing for me. I look forward to trying many more beers from this brewery.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Light orange, lots of bubbles and a two-finger head even with a slow pour
S: Fairly light with generic IPA hop/malt notes
T: Dry, dried malts, earth/green forward hops
M: Medium-bodied, dry
O: Not your typical citrus/pine IPA, more earthy & dry malts but still well-made & enjoyable

12 oz bottle.

Pours clear gold with an inch plus of fluffy white that settles to a thick coating of rocky froth. Ringed lacing with torn corners.

Mildly aromatic with traces of pine, grapefruit, and biscuity malt. Hints of tangerine and spruce resin follow through.

Medium bodied with a crisp, drying mouthfeel.

Grapefruit pith, pine sap, and citrus oils start the palate. A solid, pressing bitterness steps forward along with a medium malt base and a bark-like earthiness.

Finishes with a lingering bitterness, light malt, and bright, earthy grapefruit.

Definately dissapointed by the aromatics, but the palate steps it up nicely. Quaffable enough but lacking by todays high IPA standards.

This beer pours a murky golden color with minimal head. The nose has a nice citrus aroma. It is not overwhelming. The taste is somewhat mellow on the hops at first, then the bite of the hops kicks in. Delicious, and I do enjoy the greater distribution of Shorts.

A- poured into a white wine glass, pours a hazy dark copper with a white head that lasts a good length. Nice lacing and head but color is a bit to hazy and dark for my liking.

S- great nose! Pine, Citrus, grapefruit, orange, malt, lots of hops yum.

T- resinous, pine, earthy, grapefruit, bitter, and biscuit. not a rolling bitterness though, just kind of appears from nowhere at the end. Start is week middle is weak end is great.

M- medium body, nice carbonation,

O- this beer has a killer nose, one of the best but its color and flavor are a bit off for me, I would enjoy this fresh as opposed to part of their GABF temporary distribution in Denver. Good beer, but not world class by any means.
