Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

A: Amber color with excellent head formation and retention.

S: The aroma is of clean, crisp hops.

T: Hops, hops, hops. Not grapefruit, more like bitter pine.

M: Very smooth. Great carbonation.

D: Two was it. Those 65+ IBUs started to stack up on me.

Poured into a pint glass - on draught at the Berkley Front. Cloudy amber in color with lots of carbonation bubbles and no head, but that might be from the way it was poured. Smell is very floral with some citrus notes and a little bit of pine. Taste is very hoppy with a little grapefruit there, but there is nothing there to balance the hop bitterness, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Mouthfeel is crisp due to the carobonation - very nice for this type of beer. I could definitely drink more than one of these at a sitting, but I love the bitter taste, could be more of a chore for someone else. Recommended.

Thanks to Another6Pack for hooking me up with this one! 12 oz bottle with something printed on the label that I can't make out, might be a freshness date. Poured into my goblet.

Appearance: Slightly hazy orange golden with a nice rocky white head that did not settle quickly. Leaves nice looking lacing.

Smell: Dank pine and citrus (grapefruit) that mask a toasted malt profile.

Taste: Wow that is a bitter IPA. The hops take front and center here. I actually would like a little more maltiness to back this one up. The pine/grassy hops totally are out of balance. If you were to balance this one out, it would be like any other beer, and balance is not what they were going for here. So I cannot fault the brewers at all.

Mouthfeel: A silky mouthfeel with carbonation on the higher side. The flavor coats the mouth thoroughly.

Drinkability: This is one I would like to have again, but I could only have one in a session because of the intense bitterness.

A- A bit of a hazy golden/orange color. About a finger of white, creamy head. Really good lacing and decent head retention.

S- Very floral, a bit of a citrus bite to the edge, hoppy.

T- Very hoppy, a lot of grapefruit flavor comes through, piney, with a bit of a bitter finish at the end. Not overly bitter though, pretty well balanced. Extremely delicious IPA.

M- Pretty smooth, not overly carbonated. Light-medium body.

D- Pretty drinkable. I would definitely have drank another one of these, and I'm actually surprised I didn't. A definite recommendation for any IPA lover.

Thanks to Tyson for tossing this in as an extra in a recent trade. I barely had this beer 24 hours before I decided it was time.

Poured a cloudy, hazy light copper color. This beer is really cloudy, almost like a hefe. The small off white head retreats quickly into the brew. It leaves some decent lacing as I sip.

The smell is of piny hops, really strong and bitter. Not strong in a strong citrus, or piney way, just bitter strong. There are some pine and fruit notes in there, but they are really overpowered by the bitter.

The taste is of strong bittering hops, with really slight citrus. some pine in there as well. This is the taste of a really average IPA, In my opinion.

The Feel is pretty good, nice carb.

Overall, this is a beer I wouldn't say is bad, but I was very underwhelmed by my first Shorts Brew.

Pours a moderately hazy honey-gold bordering on orange with a rich, rocky one-finger cream-colored head that displays excellent retention, leaving a pretty network of lacing on the inside of the glass. Big hoppy nose -- good citrus presence, but primarily piney, resiny and floral notes. Big citrusy and piney hops on the tongue. Significant malt backbone gives this good balance in the middle, giving way to a peanut skin flavor, ultimately moving to a bitter lingering finish that almost borders on the astringent but fortunately stops just short. Oily mouthfeel with tingly carbonation. Perhaps a little bit big and intense to session, but very enjoyable. Recommended.

Pours a murky light copper color. I wanted to say it was golden but it just wasn't that light. Fluffy head with good lacing on the sides. Aromas of fruity citrus with some pine and grass waft from my glass. Lemon flavors with an earthy finish. Slick body with slight carbonation and a dry earthy finish. This is a good IPA that is try to form as far as style goes. I could certainly drink a few of these.

Pours a nice medium copper--penny like--color, with a pretty fluffy and tannish head.

The first thing that hits the nose is an astringent hop aroma, followed by the presence of citrus with slight floral hop hints. A bit of malt finishes out a very balanced and pleasant aroma.

The taste is disappointing. It is dominated by biting hops. In and of itself this is not a bad thing, but here there is too little to complement the bitter sting. There is a bit of malt, but not nearly enough to provide a satisfying backbone. Citrus tones are notable as well, and somewhat pleasant. On the whole, though, this is a pretty one-dimensional flavor.

Mouthfeel is crisp but full. Astringent hop makes it very biting. Potent, but not in the most pleasant way.

Overall, I am not a big fan of this beer. It is very unbalanced in my opinion. Was expecting much more malt. While it is present, it is totally overwhelmed by hop bitterness. Hop bombs are fine every once in a while. To my mind, though, they are not very complex or great beers.

12 oz bottle into pint glass:

A: Not sure if there's anything to criticize about the looks. Hazy golden-orange body with a huge off-white, creamy, sticky head, good lacing and great cap.

S: Highly complex. Orange peel and nuts, spices, light yeast, and butter right up front. Chocolate malts are also present. Amazingly rounded.

T: Peppery and citrusy, with some good floral hops coming through along with some earthy tones. Sweet chocolate is great as well.

M: Wonderfully creamy, lightly carbonated.

D: This is a perfect IPA. These are hops done right without using too many and getting into imperial territory. It's not the hoppiest, but is rather quite balanced. If may have to go to Michigan just to have some more.

nice tight short off white head, light copper in color with slight haze

great fresh hop aroma, piney and resiny

good balance with all of the hop flavor, the late bitterness rapidly disappears. very piney, almost gin like

medium body

very drinkable, but the gin like profile would stop me after maybe two of these.

Review from Fall 2012

A: Amber in color, quite cloudy from accidentally pouring in the bottle sediment. Fairly creamy looking white head on top. Lacing is quite good.

S: Some pine and maybe some buiscuty malts in there. Not much else going on.

T: This is a beer taste experience quite unlike anything else ive had before. Not in a good way either. Upfront, i basically get no taste. Like the beer is using some sort of cloaking device to pass over my tongue and get down my throat without leaving any delicious hop goodness behind. All that is left for my dumbfounded taste buds is an aftertaste flavor decoy consisting of raw IBUs and some resin.

M: Not that great. Fairly thin and sort of bubbly

O: One of my biggest beer disappointments to date. From this bottle I cannot understand its high rating. I love hop bitterness, but there must be good flavors to accompany that. Perhaps the sediment through the whole beer out of whack, but I feel like there really wasn't enough of it to accomplish that. A let down overall.
