Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

I'm having this courtesy of the Michigan beer box my sister brought back for Thanksgiving. Thanks, Em!

Short's American IPA is a good one. It's murky amber color sits underneath persistent head and lacing. This is probably the headiest IPA I've ever poured. It smells like a standard IPA. Hops, a little roastiness, maybe some citrus tang. Taste is hop forward, like you would expect. Hops finish it too, and the malts try to peek through in the center. It's a well-built beer.

The carbonation keeps it full in the mouth on a medium body, and it's as drinkable as any other solid India Pale Ale. Wish it were my style.

My boss was nice enough to grab a couple bottles for me while in MI.
A - Pours a clear golden color with a nice white head.
S - Very strong, hoppy aroma.
T - The flavor is grassy and floral and somewhat bitter throughout.
M - A little sticky, medium mouth feel.
O - I'm liking it. A different IPA without any hint of citrus. A very good beer.

My dad picked this up on a recent trip through Michigan. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass.

A - Pours a light goldenrod with a creamy white head that is only about one finger tall. Really tiny bubbles give the head a certain creaminess, which promises abundant lacing. Cascades of carbonation form vertical columns. Great clarity.

S - The first whiff bombards the nose with indisputably dank hop aromas. A good bit of lemony citrus character also asserts itself. Some grassy or earthy smells like a Spring field after rainfall.

T - Green hoppiness abounds, ushering straight into some light bready qualities. An extended bitterness is left on the finish, but the bitterness is not off-putting at all. Rather, it encourages additional drinking.

M - Highly carbonated in the mouth and dries the mouth out.

O - Nothing mind-blowing, but a very solid IPA. This bottle seemed reasonably, but not incredibly, fresh so I can only imagine the dankness of a super fresh bottle. Very enjoyable and represents the name well.

thanks to heliosphann for this extra! 12oz bottle, no freshness info.

A- Golden with a hint of orange, giving it that glowing appearance, slightly hazy.

S- beautiful citrus- mango, grapefruit. Reminds me a bit of Blind Pig.

T- I generally like as little sweetness in my IPA's as possible, but this one is just really lacking in that category. It's like bitter hops are coming through, with some flavor of their own, like bitter citrus oil, but there's hardly any sweetness in the body to be detected, and for me that means it's very low. Kind of a harsh hoppiness to it overall.

M- very dry. Too dry. Body isn't bad in terms of weight, but there's just no malt flavor in there. Almost the exact opposite of what I would expect from a brewery on that side of the country.

A - light orange body, transparent, small off white head, good retention.

S - Piney and citrusy hops. Some fruity notes in the back.

T - Fairly bitter up front, good grapefruit hop character. Dry. A very good tasting IPA.

M - A bit dry, perhaps a touch thin, but not a bad body.

O (D) - The only thing that is really interesting is the taste, which is good, because thats the point. Good tasting IPA, but nothing special, really.

Bottle courtesy of Milos, thanks buddy! Pours a hazy shade of peach, with a thin ring of white foam. The aroma here is all hops. The dry hopping has done wonders here. Lots of pine and spruce, like being in a boreal forest, some biscuit, quite floral, loads of spice too. Flavour is one dimensional and I love it. Hops, hops, hops. Pine and grapefruit, peppery floral flavours too. A bit of tropical fruit sweetness towards the end. Dry and hoppy finish. Excellent stuff. Thanks Milos!
