Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

On tap at DTW airport in nonic pint glass - slight haze, but nice floral and spicy aroma. Taste is bitter and dry, but appropriate for style with pleasant mouthfeel. Light lacing and head retention - this may partially be due to how clean the glass was. No off flavors detected. Positive overall impression.

Picked this one up at Table & Vine in West Springfield, MA.

This one seemed like it was pretty fresh. It poured an unfiltered light orange/amber color.
lacing in carbonation, and a fresh smell of hops.

Lots of flavor in this one, so much going on. I got the taste of this grainy, almost dry taste, and then a sappy, grassy taste as well in the back end.

Overall a solid beer from Shorts, it makes me want to try other Shorts beers.

Poured into a snifter, no visible bottling date, but there is a code on the bottom that I am unable to discern. My buddy just brought this back from MI, so I am assuming, one way or the other, that it's relatively fresh. Pours a really bright and hazy creamsicle orange with an equally bright white head. Head disappears pretty quickly, to almost nothing on the surface, but the lacing on the glass is decent, lots of little bubbles and interesting looking webbing.

Smells almost tart, with loads of malt and citrus up front, almost too much malt for my liking, but still good. It's super effing hoppy, for sure. I get a bit of sweetness as it warms up a bit. There's also some natural grassy/wheat aromas that become noticeable after a few minutes of warming up.

Taste is similar, very hoppy, very crisp, tart even, with malt dominating. Pine plays a small role, but overall I get a really hoppy pulpy malt/citrus flavor. I also get similar natural flavors of grass and wheat as well here. It's good, for sure.

Feels very crisp, but resinous as well. It's sharp and carbonated, biting and lingering. Basically what the label says: A complex malt and hop theme park in your mouth, which is a bit overbearing, yet still enjoyable.

Overall this a very hoppy IPA with a huge malt presence. It's big, but at 6.something percent ABV, I could prob enjoy a few of these, but likely not much else.

A - hazy dark yellow or light orange, a thin white head that fades to a ring quickly, no visible carbonatio.

S - nice big hop profile, citrus, grapefruit end of the hop scale, A supreme candied sweetness in the backgrounf make for one of the more balanced aromas I have experienced in an IPA

T - THe hops come to the forehground and dominate the flavor, and drown out any sweetness, the hops skew away fromt he citrus/grapefruit end to equal amounts piney-ness. A big hop profile, maybe a little sweetness in the finish. Nice job.

M&D&O - not as balanced as the smell indicated it would be, the hops are killer, a great piney profile and a nice IPA. Never noticed such a dichotomy in the smell and taste in a standard IPA.

I was told this, along with a couple other Short's beer is their first foray into New England and is a litmus test of the region. Hey Shorts - COME TO NEW ENGLAND PERMANENTLY!!

The bottle says 01/09/13. It pours amber with a little orange glow and a little lacy white head. There is balance in the aroma between sweet malt, caramel and biscut, and soft pine, a little earthiness, and rich grapefruit hops. The balance is excellent between the the rich malt and the acidic hops. A big burst of bitterness rounded out by a fairly tick mouthfeel and a lingering taste of grapefruit and almost copper bitterness. This is really one of the nicest bitternesses I've had on an IPA in a while! I quite like this one for the balance of the malts, the bitterness, and the acidity. It's not going to knock you out with aroma hops like some IPAs might, but there is something nice to be said about a rich bitterness and a great malt character.

A- Medium amber body with a thin white head that fizzles into a ring of bubbles. Some lacing around the edges and some transparency in an otherwise cloudy body.

S- Lots of pine and citrus with a strong biscuity malt aroma. Smells like a balanced IPA rather than a hop bomb.

T- I taste a nice balanced IPA with lots of biscuity malts coming through to balance out the intense piney hop flavor. Very balanced, very drinkable.

M- Sting on the tongue, medium body, medium carbonation.

O- This one was a good, but not great IPA. Very balanced and drinkable.

Huma Lupa Licious pours a clear amber with a two-finger creamy white head on top. The foam fades slowly leaving behind a netted pattern of lace on the glass.

The aroma has notes of caramel malt, bread, orange citrus and pine. It's not a very strong aroma and leans toward the malt side.

Each sip of this medium bodied beer is creamy on the palate with moderate carbonation. The flavor is more hoppy than the aroma. It begins with orange/grapefruit citrus and a little pine. The hops are balanced with some sweet caramel malt and a little bread. A touch of tropical fruit is also present. It finishes bitter with some earthy grass flavors. Once gone the citrus and caramel sweetness lingers on the palate.

A nicely well balanced beer that's a little funky in the flavor. Descent everyday IPA.

About 2+ months old from the bottle date, so please take that into consideration.

Pours a nice dense orange with 1 finger of head. A lot of streaming bubbles, and a lot of lacing.

I can smell the hops with only a crack of the cap. Smell is citrus and grassy. Get a dank, grassy, weed like smell.

Taste is very bitter. It get nice citrus hops taste that quickly gives way to bitterness. The bitterness almost takes away from the overall taste because its too lingering.

I was looking for an over the top hoppy beer and this delivered.

Had on-tap at Green Dot Stables in Detroit, MI.

Appearance: A very hazy orange color. Lacing is very nice on this one.

Smell: Dominantly pine aromas, though there is some citrus in there as well. A pleasant IPA, but not the best smelling one I've had.

Taste/feel: Much like the smell -- a lot of the piney, earthy aromas come through in the taste, and there's very little citrus. The finish is also pretty intensely bitter, I found, and there's no real balance. There's some malt there, but this is an IPA for the hopheads, no doubt. The feel is probably the stand out, as it is very smooth, and quite creamy. I had this straight out of a fresh, just-put-in keg, so I feel like I had this beer as fresh as possible, basically.

Not my favorite IPA (just a bit too bitter and unbalanced for my liking), but I'd most definitely have it again, as it's an extremely solid Short's beer. One of their best year rounders, without a doubt.

a hazy orange in color with a finger of head which left behind some sticky lacing all over the place. a piney, grapefruit malt heavy sweet scent. the flavor, much like the smell is malt heavy. i believe this is because it was sitting at my friend's house for a couple months. a nice earthy bitterness with a huge citrusy grapefruit punch. medium body with high carbonation, very sticky on the lips. overall, this is a SOLID beer. i'd love to try it fresh, but as is, it's a wonderful beer.

Appearance: Pours a deep golden orange…fairly transparent, there is some bubble action in the middle…whitish head about a finger width formed, a thin layer hung around…(3.75/5)

Smell: A tempered earthy hops, like a damp, dark forest in the fall…some breadiness…also some citrus hops, I am getting faint orange whiffs…very earthy and grounded…(3.75/5)

Taste: A hop explosion initially…rich, robust earthy hops dominate early and linger throughout…bready, robust toasted malts present themselves in the middle phase, really only adding more flavor and robustness…it’s a full flavored brew, that’s for sure…the finish ends way milder, I really get the piney/earthy and a bit of citrus hops flavor…the robust toasted malt flavor lingers into the after taste combining with earthy bitterness to leave a strong flavor well after I swallow…(4/5)

Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy body…robust, chewy feel…nice carbonation for such a full flavored beer, it shows a softer side to this ale…finishes a bit wet and tart…(4/5)

Overall: This is a solid brew…the hops is strong, earthy and robust…I realize I’ve used “robust” about 8 times in this review and that really is the best word to describe it…it’s like a swift kick to the chin this ale…the hops is surprisingly balanced by the malt which is why it’s so full flavored...i think one or two of these in a night would do me fine...(3.75/5)

A - Pours golden amber with a one finger head. Left good lacing.

S - Grapefruit, pineapple, malty, moderate pine. Grapefruit really dominates the scent.

T - Apples, a bit of rotten banana, quite malty, pineapple in the middle, and a slightly resonous finish. Juicy as well.

M - Medium somewhat creamy body with almost no carbonation.

O - Overall, I've had a few too many IPA's tonight. Perhaps I have gotten sick of them tonight. I don't know. This one was good, but not a whole lot different than the other's i'kve had earlier.

THIS BEER IS HUGE!!! LOVE IT! Tons of Hops, so beware if that’s not your bag. Lots going on with the variety of hops used along with the pine and citrus, so it kicks you in the teeth and makes you think at the same time. Tastes great in the bottle but if you see it on tap jump on it. One great beer.

Thanks to shamrock for sending this my way!

Great looking IPA - hazy honey gold body with a creamy finger of paper white head that laces perfectly, tons of tiny beading from beginning to end.

Some dank citrus type hops, sweet corn malts, faint conifer presence, nice and balanced.

Not as rich as the nose would suggest... hops are muted to an abstract bitterness, malts are pleasant though and actually do fine with the citrus peel bite, which makes for a clean finish.

A mouthful of hops with a totally bitter aftertaste. Pours an orangey amber in the glass. Hugely fragrant with a variety of hops, from flowery to piney.

Serious hop overdose. It's hard to rate this, since it seems so extreme. Resins and something medicinal. This might actually be a good hop concentrate to spice up that case of macro brews. A little oily and sharp in the mouth. Acidic, really. Hot and all hops, all the time. I have to go back to the old "Drinkability" rating and call it "not." Strictly for the those seeking the lash of the Hop Mistress.

From the 12 oz bottle bought at Grapevine Liquors in Denver.

Half finger head with excellent lacing on a golden with orange hues body which is slightly hazy. Excellent tropical fruit, grapefruit and candied pear citrus aroma. Hoppy flavors follow with more candied fruit with mild tart and citrus bitterness up front with fairly strong pine resin bitter finish. Malts are relatively bland and are mostly in the background. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not bad. The flavors are a bit disorganized in this one which disrupts its complexity.

12oz bottle received in trade with leafsj - thanks buddy!

Appearance - Hazy copper colour with an average size fizzy/frothy off-white coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes.

Smell - Malts, hops, grapefruit, pine

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste hops and malts mixed with caramel. There is also quite a bit of bitter resiny pine and grapefruit peel and pith. It ends with a bitter hoppy malty aftertaste.

Overall - A good dose of bitter hops but lacking in the fruity juiciness department. Still a great beer that I would drink again. Reminded me a bit of a Finest Kind IPA.

Selling the beer with high praise, the brewery makes some big statements on their label. The focus on the hop flower yields the gripping citrusy bitterness of the cone with supple support.

Medium to dark gold in color, the beer boasts a mild hoppy haze and a frothy white head of great staying power and broken rings of lace as the beer fades. It's a fine looking IPA that doesn't steer from the visual path very much.

The forefront of hops is evident in the nose. Grapefruit, oranges, and fresh-cut grass allow for an citrus and herbal display that seduces the olfactory senses with sharpness and mouth whetting effect. A brief search for malts yeilds a light scent of baking bread and mild caramel.

The one-sided balance that the nose promises is met with taste. Hop flavor starts juicy and citrusy as the supple sweetness of malt gives the fruit flavors a plumper and juicier impression of taste. As the beer traverses over the middle palate, the sharpness of citrus grows, the malt sweetness recedes further, and the grassy herbal notes rise. A malty-dry finish of muddled grasses, pine resin, and citrus pith spearhead the throat-gripping bitterness that the label suggested.

Medium in body at first, the carbonation and crusty malt lift and the dryness of hops, alcohol, and malt memory deliver a quick and fleeting finish except for a lingering citrus bitterness that crispens heading into the next taste.

If I were a craft beer enthusiast of ten years ago, this would have likely been the showpiece for hopcentric beers, similar to Goose Island's IPA and Anderson Valley's Hop Ottin'. But in today's combative IPA world, this one may get lost in the shuffle.

Reviewed blind, thanks to abraxel...

A: Pours a translucent gold with yellow hues. There is a full two fingers of head that take forever to settle. Massive lacing as it drinks.

S: The nose is pine, malt, and a lot of vegetal funk. It smells like an old IPA. I even get a touch of onion in here. It's a bit off-putting.

T: This beer is sweet to start but then it turns to onion and old vegetation. It tastes muddy and funky. Honestly, this is pretty unpleasent. It sweetens back up in the finish and nothing lingers for too long.

M: Medium bodied beer. It's sweet and weird to start. It gets a bit nasty in the middle and finishes sweet again.

O: Not a fan of this at all. Either this is old, or it's just bad. There was way too much old vegetal taste for my liking.

poured from bottle into a pint glass. Pours a hazy orange/gold color with a nice head.

fresh with resiny aromas of pine cones, hops, navel oranges and loads of citrus. Nice depth to the aromas as well.

medium/full bodied with a very good feel. Balanced with very good flavors of hops, citrus, navel oranges and some resin flavors on the back end.

This is a real quality IPA. The hops are certainly there, but it's well done in a hop forward style.

One of the better IPAs I've ever had.

Picked it up in Michigan since I don't get them in Illinois. No expiration date found on the bottle.

Not much malt in the aroma (no complaints there). Surprisingly low hops there, but still smells wonderful.

Beautiful amber color. Low head, minimal lacing. Very clear.

Great bitterness-not overly so like some IPAs. Must be some great malt backing it up. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Finishes dry, which I like.

Overall, I really like this beer. I think it's a great representation of the American IPA style. I would definitely buy it again.

Bought a new liter stein so I thought I'd christen it with this

A: a clear gold-orange color with minimal light head and not much lacing

S: hops, and alot of it too , very strong aroma

T: bread, malts, grain, citrus and hop loaded, very strong after taste.

M: mild amount of carbonation, very smooth, with strong after taste

O: Not much of a fan of IPAs, the hops are usually too over bearing for me, but not this one. There is a strong presence of hops both before and after but its not offensive, which is surprising to me for being an IPA, a pleasant surprise from one of my favorite breweries.

Thanks to ncketchum for the bottle. I poured this one into a CBS snifter. It was served slightly chilled.

A) Hazy orange brew with virtually no head. Perhaps I could have been more assertive with the pour. A little spotty lacing on the snifter.

S) Tropical fruits, light pine, and just a little alcohol. This was a nice aroma...

T) Ripe pineapple, citrus zest, bready/malty sweetness, a little alcohol warmth, finishes with a little orange rind.

M) Solid medium body with a fair amount of carbonation. This was quite smooth. The rind and alcohol cling a bit, but it works.

O) Enjoyable... Easily my favorite Short's offering, at least from what I've been able to try thus far. I have no reservations about recommending this brew.
