BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Short's Brewing Company
Michigan, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Duvel Tulip. The notched label tells me that it was bottled in March 2009.

The body is an unhazed dark orange with a decent off-white head. The smell is very smooth and hoppy, reminding me of Hopslam or Double Trouble. Quite a bit of pine in the taste. Very drinkable, and perhaps overall the best IPA I've had.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a moderately-hazy copper color with an off white head and some good lacing. The nose brings through some really nice pine and citrus hops. The taste isn't quite as powerful, as a bit of malt comes through, replacing some of the hop flavor and bitterness that I would have expected. Pretty tame. The feel is nice and this drinks quite well.

Pours a big fluffy 1+ finger head that fades semis slowly, with a bit of lacing, over super clear toasty amber orange color.

Nose has plenty of nice hops, lots of citrus, bit of tropical fruit, light fresh hop resin, grapefruit, pineapple, guava, lots of fresh tropical fruits. Underneath is the slightest hint of malts.

Taste starts a bit creamy actually, a light malty base starts to come through, bringing a slight sweetness, but that is quickly cut down by the heavy hops, a strong bitterness starts to come through, lots of fresh musty hop resins, some tropical fruits, lots of citrus, light orange rind, hop oils, it even starts to get a little astringent, and the malty base has disappeared really quickly, leaving the hops alittle flat, almost like drinking hop water. The malts were begging to come though first, but then were quickly drowned by the hops and left for dead somewhere else. The bitterness lingerers practically forever, leaving a slight astringent taste, as well as some pine, citrus, and orange zest.

Mouth is a bit lighter bodied with good carbonation.

Drink is OK, it gets pretty bitter and a bit astringent, but drier finish, although a flat finish with no malts to back it up.

Has a nice looking light copper color, though from the bottle I poured there wasn’t much of a head. The aroma is hops and the flavor is a ridiculous amount of hops. Finish is dry and there’s also some hints of floral sweetness. Has medium carbonation and a nice mouthfeel. Quite good.

Poured into a Russian River glass, revealing two fingers of buttercreamy head over a hazy dark amber body. Awesome lacing. Smells soft, sweet and a little fruity with fresh peach, jasmine and other light floral hoppy notes. Very enticing smells.

Tastes nice and bitter up front with a lingering nutty maltiness which accompanies the nutty hop aftertaste. Some mealy flavors at the end, nice citrus rind freshness at the beginning (though this bottle isn't perfectly fresh) and lots of both though not tongue-assaulting. Mouthfeel is a little dry and slightly creamy with a tongue-tickling carbonation. Medium-bodied. Decently drinkable, the flavors aren't perfectly integrated but they are delicious as they come.

Overall a very decent AIPA rendition. I would like to try it fresh and on tap.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

a - Pours a nice orange amber color with two inches of off white head and moderate carbonation.

s - Smells of citrus hops, fruits, caramel malts, and bready malts. Very nice balance.

t - Taste is very bitter up front. Tastes of bitter piney and citrus hops, followed by a little bit or caramel malts.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth.

d - This was a decent IPA. I thought the smell was very nice and balanced with some great hops and malts, but the taste was a little too bitter for me. I thought the bitterness overpowered the taste. Would give it another shot though.

Thanks to michibrew for this beer. 12 oz. bottle poured into standard pint. Bottle dated 1/18/12.

A - Pours a slightly hazy pale copper with a bright white head that dies quickly. Leaves a leopard lacing on the glass.

S - Smells strongly of citrus and cornbread. The hops are mostly floral and slightly spicy.

T - Lemon zest and citrus hops balanced with a nice sweet finish. Not as bitter as I expected from the description. I have a hard time believing 140 IBU with the balance and clean finish on this beer. Aftertaste is a combination of hops, grass, and sweet malt.

M - Good carbonation and slightly chewy feel. Very smooth with a finish moister than the norm for a very hoppy IPA.

O - A good IPA from Short's Brew. This fits into the category that I call "pale IPA" (pardon the redundancy). I appreciate their ability to make a very clean, drinkable IPA that doesn't shy away from the hops. It is nearly balanced, favoring the hops slightly. If I had access to this beer regularly I would probably drink it on the reg.

A - hazy dark yellow or light orange, a thin white head that fades to a ring quickly, no visible carbonatio.

S - nice big hop profile, citrus, grapefruit end of the hop scale, A supreme candied sweetness in the backgrounf make for one of the more balanced aromas I have experienced in an IPA

T - THe hops come to the forehground and dominate the flavor, and drown out any sweetness, the hops skew away fromt he citrus/grapefruit end to equal amounts piney-ness. A big hop profile, maybe a little sweetness in the finish. Nice job.

M&D&O - not as balanced as the smell indicated it would be, the hops are killer, a great piney profile and a nice IPA. Never noticed such a dichotomy in the smell and taste in a standard IPA.

I was told this, along with a couple other Short's beer is their first foray into New England and is a litmus test of the region. Hey Shorts - COME TO NEW ENGLAND PERMANENTLY!!

12 oz. bottle poured into a standard pint glass.

A: Dark mahogany in color, great off white head that keeps shape for awhile, and killer lacing. Impressive.

S: Not too overwhelming in any way or form, earthy hops in the front followed by a nice hit of sweet malt in the back.

T: Good hit of hops off the bat, then a subtle flow of mellow sweetness coming from the malt characteristics to round things off.

M: Creamy, with some stickiness on the intake. ABV blended well, good to whale down or taken gently.

O: An overall good two-way IPA that can please both sides. Definitely worth a shot if given the opportunity.

Appearance: somewhat hazy/cloudy, dark golden-light brownish color

Smell: fruity, citrusy, pineapple, mango, orange

Taste: strong hop presence, but undertone hints of citrusy and fruity flavors (mainly mango/pineapple)

Mouthfeel: well balanced, smooth, medium body and slightly carbonated feeling

Overall: very good! a great all around IPA with great flavors, and a decent body but not overwhelming

Poured from a 12oz bottle from a mixed Michigan six pack. I am not a huge fan of IPAs but I like this one. Clear golden orange color with thick white foamy head with tons of lacing. Very inviting appearance. Smell is of intense hops and pine. Taste is similar but also with a bit of citrus. Hops are strong up front but mellows out on the second half pleasantly. Alcohol is well hidden -- was surprised to see it's 7%. Could have a couple.

Clear amber orange with a pure white firm and thick head.

Nose is perfumed pineapple with a floral character and a light lemon maple character.

Mouthfeel is rich and with a creamy character but nice feeling and hop heavy bitter in the balance. (Which I view as a positive characteristic).

Flavors are big bold assertive bitter pine with some underlying hints of cooked honey and green herbs and spices.

Finish is all bitter pine and pine resin. A luscious feeling and tasting beer with lots of nice character.

Many thanks to Devin for the opportunity to sample this.

The beer pours a golden amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is pretty interesting and intense, showcasing considerable marijuana, skunky aroma, grapefruit frind and wet hay. On the palate, this beer is very dry, with a bitter honey fruit profile. There is very little malt detectable, and frankly this IPA could probably use some. Mouthfeel is at most medium bodied, with a long, dry, bitter finish. Drinkability is OK, with the alcohol pretty much unnoticeable. Still, this beer comes across as a hop bomb with very little else to offer, and ultimately it just wasn't a beer I really loved.

Reminds me very much of the Grant's IPA I had many, many years ago. Interesting to sample, but just not my cup of tea.

Pours a golden amber color. First whiff lets you know you are in for a hop bomb with big notes of pine sap and grapefruit. Super bitter flavor, with a lot more of the resins pine and grapefruit pith. Super dry finish with bitterness tht lingers forever. Well made beer but not for the faint of heart if you don't love bitter IPAs

I'm having this courtesy of the Michigan beer box my sister brought back for Thanksgiving. Thanks, Em!

Short's American IPA is a good one. It's murky amber color sits underneath persistent head and lacing. This is probably the headiest IPA I've ever poured. It smells like a standard IPA. Hops, a little roastiness, maybe some citrus tang. Taste is hop forward, like you would expect. Hops finish it too, and the malts try to peek through in the center. It's a well-built beer.

The carbonation keeps it full in the mouth on a medium body, and it's as drinkable as any other solid India Pale Ale. Wish it were my style.

Picked up this morning while in Grand Rapids. Drinking fresh this evening at home 6 hours away.

Consumed in a Unibroue tulip glass. Light copper color with puffy, one-finger white head that falls leaving a solid white film on the glass.

Initial aroma is sweet and fruity with perhaps a touch of floral.

First couple of sips have what I consider a dirty finish. I prefer the clean, crisp finishing IPA's. A couple of sips later my mouth is acclimated to the flavor and it's drinking better (I'm drinking this after a Short's pale ale).

A- poured into a white wine glass, pours a hazy dark copper with a white head that lasts a good length. Nice lacing and head but color is a bit to hazy and dark for my liking.

S- great nose! Pine, Citrus, grapefruit, orange, malt, lots of hops yum.

T- resinous, pine, earthy, grapefruit, bitter, and biscuit. not a rolling bitterness though, just kind of appears from nowhere at the end. Start is week middle is weak end is great.

M- medium body, nice carbonation,

O- this beer has a killer nose, one of the best but its color and flavor are a bit off for me, I would enjoy this fresh as opposed to part of their GABF temporary distribution in Denver. Good beer, but not world class by any means.

A- Slightly cloudy, golden brown or a dirty orange/gold.
S- citrusy and maybe a slight caramel
T- Completely follows the aroma, has a bittersweet taste kinda fruity and a very strong aftertaste. Quite Lingering
M- Crisp, medium carbonation, easy downfall with strong after feel.
*My overall is defiantly a thumbs up! well suited for different occasion (for the people who enjoy higher IBU) -very good IPA.
overall a good beer, I definitely enjoyed it!

12oz bottle - I don't know if I can contain a whole theme park in my mouth... thanks to Roke87 for the cross-continent trade.

This beer pours a cloudy medium golden orange colour, with one beefy finger of creamy, foamy ecru head, which leaves a decent forest profile of lace around the glass in its wake. It smells of bitterly fragrant citrus and pine hops, and dry, dusty, cracker grain. The taste is bitter pine and citrus rind hops, and musty, crackery malt. Only a slight warming is perceptible, given the ABV. The carbonation is moderate, and sprightly, the body light, and surprisingly quite smooth. It finishes fairly clean, the bitter citrus/grass hops muscling out the weaker grain representation.

A good, hoppy IPA, with what I'm beginning to see as a Midwest hop profile trend (at least to samples shipped way out West) - less grapefruit, more grassy, herbal, but bitter all the same. Enjoyable, and very drinkable, obfuscated alcohol aside.

This is a good IPA. On the lighter side, but heavy on the malt, you can tell this one is made with experienced and living hands. Nothing stands out to put it in the exceptional category, but very well done. A heartfelt thumbs up!

12 oz. bottle, bottled on 02/23/2016 printed on the bottleneck. My first beer from Short's Brewing Company, excited to finally see these appearing in Illinois.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - A rich golden orange body, aptly carbonated, with some nice light sediment floating in the glass. Two fingers of thick frothy soapy white head with good staying power, leaves good fluffy lacing on the glass. Looks very nice per the style.

S - An earthy, herbal, grassy nose. Subtle notes of skunk, pine, grass, and lemon zest. Not a terribly piney / resinous / hop forward aroma, especially for a moderately high abv IPA, but it smells good, fresh, and appealing.

T - Taste is a few notches up from the nose: piney, resinous, & bitter. Has some West Coast style IPA attributes to it, especially with the big bitterness. Juicy, piney, bitter, & resinous, with lots of hoppy goodness.

M - Feel is juicy, smooth, easy-drinking. Dry, piney, & resinous hops on the palate. Very big bitterness on this one, but very drinkable.

Overall, a nice introduction to Short's Brewing for me. I look forward to trying many more beers from this brewery.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Light orange, lots of bubbles and a two-finger head even with a slow pour
S: Fairly light with generic IPA hop/malt notes
T: Dry, dried malts, earth/green forward hops
M: Medium-bodied, dry
O: Not your typical citrus/pine IPA, more earthy & dry malts but still well-made & enjoyable

12 oz bottle.

Pours clear gold with an inch plus of fluffy white that settles to a thick coating of rocky froth. Ringed lacing with torn corners.

Mildly aromatic with traces of pine, grapefruit, and biscuity malt. Hints of tangerine and spruce resin follow through.

Medium bodied with a crisp, drying mouthfeel.

Grapefruit pith, pine sap, and citrus oils start the palate. A solid, pressing bitterness steps forward along with a medium malt base and a bark-like earthiness.

Finishes with a lingering bitterness, light malt, and bright, earthy grapefruit.

Definately dissapointed by the aromatics, but the palate steps it up nicely. Quaffable enough but lacking by todays high IPA standards.

This beer pours a murky golden color with minimal head. The nose has a nice citrus aroma. It is not overwhelming. The taste is somewhat mellow on the hops at first, then the bite of the hops kicks in. Delicious, and I do enjoy the greater distribution of Shorts.
