Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Thanks to nappie for bringing me a sixer of this stuff.

Poured into tulip. A really clear copper with a consistent white, soapy head.

Nose has a big hop presence. Really citrusy with strong grapefruit. Malt smells slightly sweet.

Hops win out in the balance department. Nice citrus with a strong bitter finish. Malt backbone does enough to keep the hops from straying to far. I like when the hops are dominant so I find this to be quite drinkable. Good carbonation. Glad I was able to try this hop bomb. I've got to make it out to Michigan on the next beertrip.

I’ll just say right off the bat that this IPA is right up my alley.

It’s got a beautiful golden color and a fluffy head which laces-up quite nicely.

It smells floral & inviting, but never overpowering.

The taste is a well-balnced malt backbone with a gentle (but not shy) hop profile. It’s lingering bitterness cuts a light sweetness. It’s drinkable as HELL! I could easily finish off three without feeling like I got knocked-upside-the-head then gagged-on by a hop vine. It’s refreshing and always puts a smile on my face.

In addition, I think Shorts packaging is simple, honest and one of the best.

Bartender mentioned that this is the HopCat Owner's favorite beer. I had heard of it before and it was a good thing to see that it was on tap at HopCat for my visit there two days ago. Review from notes taken at the bar. Poured into a clean, clear glass.

A Light brown yellow body with creamy head. 4.0

S Hops, sweet malt to the nose. Hops are not overwhelming in an unbalanced way. 4.0

T Hops predominate but there is a nice, sweet malt to balance them out. Hops taste lingered like you think that it might well into the aftertaste. Nicely made beer. I can see why someone who has tasted many great beers might find that this is one of their favorites. 4.5

M Full with malt, bitter hops. 4.0

D Good. I finished the pint without any problem. 4.0

Notes: a treat to find at HopCat, a world class Beer Advocate place.

Pours a beautiful golden red with a little fizzy white head. This is one of the most beautiful poured ipas. Its very cloudy.

Smell - it has a very DIPA smell. Tons of citrus and tropical fruit. Pineapples and mangos hops included

Taste - it follows the nose. Man I would swear this was a DIPA. Strong citrus and the hops oh man so crisp, It leaves the mouth dry but begging for more. Nothing wrong here.

Mouthfeel - beautiful! !

Overall - it looked amazing and tasted amazing what else could you want.

Poured into a teku pint. Bottom of can says 08/16/16.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 3/4 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves large clots behind.

S- Refreshing aroma of piney, herbal hops that also has a bit of citrus going on and some sweet cereal grain malt.

T- Great synthesis of flavor with the vegetal but still somewhat fruity hop flavor jiving with the sweetness of the malt all while being accentuated by the higher level of bitterness. The bitterness also provides some dryness to offset the sweetness of the malt. Lots of resinous quality and the bitterness stays solid throughout the entire drink.

M- Sharp from the hops with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- You can taste the 140 IBUs but it works within the construct of the flavor profile. Tasty stuff and something I would certainly recommend to someone looking for an IPA with a palate wrecking type of bitterness.

2 for 2 from this brewery - first, Space Rock was surprisingly fantastic, at least in it's smell, though the taste fell short (no pun intended). This one is more balanced in its qualities: overall, very good, though not quite legendary. Something about that sweet bready flavor and deep, piney malt with some grapefruit and vegetable flavors just blends together into something eminently drinkable and easy to love. It's Shorts season - bring on the fine weather!

Purchased from Keweenaw Co-Op for $10.99/6 pack. Poured from bottle into swifter. Can not read black bottled on date.

Appearance: Pours a hazy burnt Orange with copper hues. Pours a lively half finger white head. Prominent sticky lacing ensues.

Smell: Bright floral hop aroma. Initial blast of yeast, providing great body to citrus, pipe smoke, and earthy spruce.

Taste: This beer has some real crunchy feel, finished by sugary tangerine. Strong hop presence. Really fantastic. Enough malt bill to hold up to this hop bomb. It's tasty.

Mouth: Good carbonation lends support for the dryness. Puckering hops in this bottle.

Drink and overall: very drinkable. Great overall beer. Fortunate to have access to this guy. Can stand up to some other great MI IPAs.

Aroma is earthy, floral, and piney. Taste follows, with some citrus notes in there as well. Pretty malty for an ipa bordering on imperial but still a nice hop bite.

The bottle says 01/09/13. It pours amber with a little orange glow and a little lacy white head. There is balance in the aroma between sweet malt, caramel and biscut, and soft pine, a little earthiness, and rich grapefruit hops. The balance is excellent between the the rich malt and the acidic hops. A big burst of bitterness rounded out by a fairly tick mouthfeel and a lingering taste of grapefruit and almost copper bitterness. This is really one of the nicest bitternesses I've had on an IPA in a while! I quite like this one for the balance of the malts, the bitterness, and the acidity. It's not going to knock you out with aroma hops like some IPAs might, but there is something nice to be said about a rich bitterness and a great malt character.

On-tap.

Pours a clear and deep copper color with a 1.5-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth pale and caramel malts with large amounts of herbal and pine hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells, although the hop presence is slightly more muted. Sticky caramel malt flavors lightened by moderate amounts of pale malts kick things off. Joining in shortly thereafter are equal amounts of herbal and pine hops. Midway through the sip the hop influence lightens up a bit and soft citrus flavors make a brief appearance. The citrus hops fade out near the end of the sip, allowing the malt and herbal hops to carry through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this remains a nicely done IPA. The herbal notes were more prevalent in the tap version, perhaps the beer was younger and the freshness made them more pronounced. Either way, a solid beer that's worth a shot.

No freshness date. Received for the wife from abraxel. Cheers and thanks!

Served into a standard pint glass.

Has a near reddish yellow body, with a foamy cap and though it only reaches a solid finger of head, presents a nice smattering of lacing throughout.

Strong citrus fruit notes, a good malt base that comes off as a sweet candied orange zest.

Dang this baby is smooth. A moderate entrance, that comes off more malty than hoppy, but with a pleasant and well deserved kick of hops that crawls up the back of the tongue. Citrus, soft biscuit, some butter notes, all well played. Nice balance.

For what its worth, the beer is well made. Neither sticky, nor abrasive.

Dang good IPA. Wish we had this baby in Florida for sure. Gives Jai Alai a run for its money. Not saying its not "world class", just for a drinkable IPA, this one is hard to beat.

This beer was served in a pint glass well chilled and allowed to hit a nice drinking temp.

Appearance: The body of the beer is a very pleasing clear honey coppery coloration. The head is white and resolves to a ring of foam. Spiderwebbing of lace mark the beers rapid passage from my glass.

Smell: The aroma of the beer is hop infused. Grapefruit and grapefruit zest, nice pine aromas combine well with the grapefruit. A bit of mango, pineapple and tobacco whaft about. Very nicely done.

Taste: The hop flavors are pretty bold for an APA. Pine resin dominates my palate nice combination of citrus flavors. Long lasting bitterness.

Mouthfeel The body of the beer is light and refreshing. The hops are a bit oily but add to the beers mouthfeel and overall experience.

Overall: This is a very pleasing and satisfying APA. The hops and the oily sensation to the hops make this beer feel just like a DIPA. This is very well executed and what I have come to expect from Shorts.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/29/2014. Pours hazy bright orange color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate malt balance; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange zest, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate malt flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, sticky, and slightly creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome IPA. All around great complexity of bright citrus/pine hops and moderate malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

This copper/cloudy/hazy brew sits lightly in a pint glass, with a big whiteish head that fades. Nose is beautiful citrusy hops, cascade, grapefruit notes. Taste is a bit more one-noted, but solid west coast hop taste, little alcohol. Slight floral hints. Mouthfeel is good; it feels like an IPA. Drinkability is quite high for an IPA, as this isn't a hop bomb, and it's also not boring. Nice balance.

One of the better IPAs I've ever had.

Picked it up in Michigan since I don't get them in Illinois. No expiration date found on the bottle.

Not much malt in the aroma (no complaints there). Surprisingly low hops there, but still smells wonderful.

Beautiful amber color. Low head, minimal lacing. Very clear.

Great bitterness-not overly so like some IPAs. Must be some great malt backing it up. Lingering bitter aftertaste. Finishes dry, which I like.

Overall, I really like this beer. I think it's a great representation of the American IPA style. I would definitely buy it again.

UrbanCaver brought this back for me from MI. Thanks Cam!

A-Pours a hazy, burnt orange color. Looks nice
S-Stong hop smell. More citrus than anything
T-Nice bitter hop flavor. Some citrus hops and slight grapefruit. Hop bitterness really lingers
M- Not balanced at all really. just straight hops.
D-Bitterness remains in your mouth. I love that part of it.
