Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

Yuck. A very nasty, unpleasant beer that in no way is like any IPA you have ever experienced - which, as you may have deduced, is not a good thing in this case. Huma-whatever is an IPA that should never have been brought to market.

Slightly hazy golden color, quickly dissipating head on this beer. Smell isn't very pungent, like a lager with slight hop smell. The flavor is much more hoppy than the scent. Very crisp and butter, just lightly dank. Not much fruit, mostly pine flavor. I don't mind this beer, but I won't go out of my way for it. A nice lady at a store bought it for me after we talked about beer, so I'll cherish every drop. Overall, I just don't think I like shorts beer that much. I'm always open to have my mind changed though.

The appearance was a nice golden amber color with a decent transparency about it and a nice moderately carbonation rising at a nice pace to feed the one fingered white foamy head. There is a nice somewhat trickling stringy lacing gracing the sides of the glass. The smell had a nice bitter to sweet hoppy (citrus-like to malty-like) flavoring running about my taste buds. There actually was no aftertaste but there was a dry bitter finish. On the palate, it sat about a light to medium with a decent sessionability about it. The carbonation had a nice assault on my mouth and tongue as a good AIPA should. Overall, this was a good AIPA well worthy of having again. There’s no disappointment here. This one delivers as it should.

On Tap

Short's Huma Lupa Licious poured a medium gold color with a short but thick off-white head that faded slowly. The nose was dominated by flora hops and citrus. The taste begins with citrus and grassy hop bitterness. The malt then shows its self and helps balance the 5 different hop varieties. The aftertaste is hoppy but not 'overboard' thanks to the malt. The mouth feel is crisp, clean and smooth with a medium body and carbonation.

For this non-hophead, Huma Lupa Licious is tasty and quite drinkable thanks to the malt that helps balance all those hops.

The beer pours slightly cloudy, amber colored, with a healthy head that gets replenished for a while by the bubbles. It is a good looking brew.

The aroma - the first hit is overwhelmingly citrus rind, grapefruit specifically. A little pine, a little earthiness. Underneath is a malt presence, but it is pretty well-subdued.

To my taste buds, there is a nice sweetness at first, followed by a sledgehammer of pithy/rind-like grapefruit citrus, and a disproportionate bitterness way too late to blend with the other flavors. The malt is a backseat driver here - present as a very slight, sweet biscuit flavor. There is a hint of herbal/floral flavor but it barely registers.

The feel is drying, and the bitterness borders on the unpleasant to me,

Overall, while I like the flavors they feel disconnected and the beer, for my taste, is quite unbalanced.

Excellent IPA! It is my go to IPA love the bitterness and the hop flavor is the best I've had. The only problem is the high alcohol content and the calories can only drink one or two before switching to a session IPA.

Clear golden color with off-white head. Aroma has some toasted malt and classic, resiny hops. Some bittersweet orange peel in the back. Taste starts bitter up-front with nice orange peel flavor, pine resin and earthy hops. Bitterness is quite intense but doesn't really feel harsh. Medium body with smooth mouthfeel. A classic style of IPA but executed really well.

One of the worst IPA's Ive had. It's a little too sour for me, and it tastes like grass. The beer has a hard tough finish that's just blahhh. Not a very pleasant beer to drink with the other options on the market. I could barley finish it, and contemplated pouring it out with every sip.
