Short's Huma Lupa Licious India Pale AleShort's Huma Lupa Licious India Pale Ale

Brewed by:
Short's Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

A - A clear, sunset orange body with an off-white crown into a standard shaker. Retention isn't really its strong suit, at least out of a bottle. Good lacing... it looks like little amoeba on the sides of my glass.

S - Pineapple, huge citrus notes... just juicy citric, bitter hops. I think it may be the fruitiest smelling AIPA coming out of MI right now.

T - It's a bitter brew, believe me... it's right up there with Green Flash IPA. If you're into a huge IBU bitch slap, this is up your alley. Basically huge dry hops, with a massively bitter finish. The malt is very subdued and plays a miniscule role in the taste. It may come off a little less over the top on draft, but it's still awesome to have this in a bottle. Super dry finish.

M - Nice body, nice carbonation.

D - I can do one or two of these at home out of a bottle, and on draft I can normally drink them all night... until I'm stumbling, that is.

Notes: This translated relatively well into a bottle and I'm quite happy to now be able to go to the store and by sixxers of Huma Lupa :)

Purchased from Keweenaw Co-Op for $10.99/6 pack. Poured from bottle into swifter. Can not read black bottled on date.

Appearance: Pours a hazy burnt Orange with copper hues. Pours a lively half finger white head. Prominent sticky lacing ensues.

Smell: Bright floral hop aroma. Initial blast of yeast, providing great body to citrus, pipe smoke, and earthy spruce.

Taste: This beer has some real crunchy feel, finished by sugary tangerine. Strong hop presence. Really fantastic. Enough malt bill to hold up to this hop bomb. It's tasty.

Mouth: Good carbonation lends support for the dryness. Puckering hops in this bottle.

Drink and overall: very drinkable. Great overall beer. Fortunate to have access to this guy. Can stand up to some other great MI IPAs.

A- poured a slight amber golden color. the slightest off white thick foamy head. medium lacing.

S- just hops. earthy and citrusy

T- just how it smells but with a caramel malt backup blended just right.

M- medium light bodied. nice carbonation.

D- could try to drink a whole 6. on my 4th right now and feelin pretty good(abv).

Overall- this beer is how a michigan ipa should be made. this goes in the pack of bell's two hearted and dark horse's crooked tree even tho the crooked has more of a malt blend. if you're an ipa fan and like the bitterness you should totally try this brew.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a beer mug at around 50 degrees.

Appearance: Golden-amber, a touch on the dark side but still very translucent. Thick, two-finger head recedes to a shallow, yet stable foam on top of the beer. Moderate lacing on the edges of the glass, and good-looking carbonation.

Smell: Hops! Probably a good thing considering the beer is named after the scientific nomenclature for "hops." Light and bright, with flowery notes and a distinct orange and/or coriander feel to the nose. Beautiful.

Taste: The hops don't play around. Bittersweet in the best of ways. A slight "steak-off-the-grill" flavor to it. Gentle candy flavor near the end, and it finishes up nicely with a bite.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is good, it doesn't overwhelm the beer but it sticks around long enough to bring out some flavor. Goes down smooth with just a touch of hop notes left on the palate.

Drinkability: Another beer I could drink nightly. It makes me think of Indian or Thai food. Possibly a good year-rounder.

Solid good for this one. Not exactly right up my alley, but nothing negative to say about it. Great for lovers of IPAs and American IPAs.

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass

A- a light copper with a 2 finger head that settles to a finger leaving lacing as it settles. Looks very nice.

S- strong hop citrus, pineapple, and a touch of pine very appealing, I can't wait to taste this.

T- heavy on the citrus flavor up front with the pine coming through in the back. Very nice, actually quite refreshing.

M- carbonation is moderate, aftertaste lingers for a bit, not a strong point of this beer. It's not bad in this area, just not memorable.

O- My first Short's brew, and a very nice one at that. A nice example of an IPA that's also very approachable, hoppy, but not extremely bitter.

Got this beer from a good friend who went through Michigan.
The smell of this beer needs to be marketed as a cologne. It is amazing! This beer's bouquet is equal to that of notable IIPA's. It hints of pineapple, a little grapefruit, and a good amount of citrus that resembles tangerine. There's also a little pine in the nose.
Taste is smooth and full of malty crystal and two row along with a little caramel malt with soem subtle hop flavors. There's a gradual build of big piney hop bitterness at the swallow.
Very smooth moutfeel for an under 7 percent beer.
Love this beer!

Pours hazy, deep golden orange under an inch of off-white head. Lovely pungent aroma of strong American hops. Rich, sweet malts try and fail to balance the hops. Really nicely done.

Big hop flavor fights off the malts long enough to scar the tongue; the hops are forward and strong but not overwhelming. Then , the sweeter elements of the malts tease the palate. Finishes long and slow.

Mouthfeel is medium rich but short of big and buttery; nicely present without being aggressive. Well balanced. Michigan has many good brewers working throughout the state. A trip from brewery to brewery would make a nice future trip.

12 oz bottle into pint glass:

A: Not sure if there's anything to criticize about the looks. Hazy golden-orange body with a huge off-white, creamy, sticky head, good lacing and great cap.

S: Highly complex. Orange peel and nuts, spices, light yeast, and butter right up front. Chocolate malts are also present. Amazingly rounded.

T: Peppery and citrusy, with some good floral hops coming through along with some earthy tones. Sweet chocolate is great as well.

M: Wonderfully creamy, lightly carbonated.

D: This is a perfect IPA. These are hops done right without using too many and getting into imperial territory. It's not the hoppiest, but is rather quite balanced. If may have to go to Michigan just to have some more.

Poured into a Russian River glass, revealing two fingers of buttercreamy head over a hazy dark amber body. Awesome lacing. Smells soft, sweet and a little fruity with fresh peach, jasmine and other light floral hoppy notes. Very enticing smells.

Tastes nice and bitter up front with a lingering nutty maltiness which accompanies the nutty hop aftertaste. Some mealy flavors at the end, nice citrus rind freshness at the beginning (though this bottle isn't perfectly fresh) and lots of both though not tongue-assaulting. Mouthfeel is a little dry and slightly creamy with a tongue-tickling carbonation. Medium-bodied. Decently drinkable, the flavors aren't perfectly integrated but they are delicious as they come.

Overall a very decent AIPA rendition. I would like to try it fresh and on tap.
