Chief Hopper is a Double IPA hopped with Vic Secret, Simcoe, and Centennial hops inspired by the show “Stranger Things.” Chief Hopper is deep gold in color and has a dense white head. Dank aromas of pine, grapefruit, pineapple, and mango are accompanied by just a hint of malt. Smooth and balanced in flavor, a citrus forefront is matched with equal malt character.

Bottled on 6/11/19. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy glowing burnt orangish golden; chunky off-white head that falls slowly leaving great thick retention and sticky lacing. The aromas have some malts and citrus going on. Orange, tangerines and clementines are there. Some caramel as well. The flavors basically follow the nose. More orange, tangerines and clementines along with some grapefruit. More caramel along with some hints of toffee. Some pine sap to give it some resinous characteristics. Some pine needles. Some chalk. Some black pepper. There's a moderate spiciness. Solid scathing bitterness. Solid hop flavors. Malts definitely do their thing, but don't completely takeover. Nice balance between the hops and malts. Alcohol is well hidden for the most part although it does drink big. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's sharp, fluffy, smooth and dangerously drinkable.
This is a pretty nice DIPA. This one is simply hitting on all cylinders without being flashy. It's bold, enjoyable and fun to drink. It kind of has an "old school Imperial IPA" vibe going on, but definitely in a good way. The craftsmanship is on point. Well done. I really like it.

Appearance – This poured a crystal clear darkish orange in color with a nice, moderate white head.
Smell – The nose gives off a hearty hop aroma but the Centennials trounce the complexity that the brewer seemed to be after.
Taste – This big hoppy beer has a nice malt balance but is a bit too toasted for my preference on the style. And again as in the smell those Centennials bully the other hops used in production.
Mouthfeel – This is medium bodied with some good dryness especially at the finish and lightly carbonated in keeping with the style.
Drinkability – I enjoyed this beer but just average in the world of DIPAs and dry-hopped ales.

12 oz bottle from my pal’s stock. What a pleasant surprise? Already a fan of Short’s Huma, Centennial and All Day IPAs. Chief Hopper double IPA is a wonderful addition to Short’s stable.
