Notes: Our new fall seasonal which is a Northern Michigan version of a German style Marzen or Oktoberfest, done the Short's Brew way. This beer is well balanced with Noble hop additions which provide a subtle bouquet and pleasant flavor which melds well with the malt profile consisting of 2 row, chocolate, special roast, caramel and Munich malts.  It's a brand new addition to the Short's Brew family of beer.

Noble Chaos Oktoberfest is a handsome butterscotch coloured lager. It is about as clear as a beer get's with this kind of deep, coppered tone. Although friendly with the light, it doesn't offer any substantial highlighting. No substantial head either.

The maltiness is toothsome enough to be reminiscent of nougat, rum cake, and sticky toffee pudding but isn't overly sweet in and of itself; rather, it is decidedly grainy and bready. This is bolder than many German examples but still smells like a traditional, time-honored recipe.

The addition of chocolate, roast, and caramel malts to the usual two-row and Munich provides additional depth in the flavour department; traces of cocoa, smoke and toffee dot the finish. It is still distinguished, mind you, by hearty graininess and rich, toasted bread notes.

All that scrumptious malty sweetness doesn't stick around long; the finish is dry as plain toast and becomes alight with spicy Noble hops - lots of 'em! The aftertaste has notes of rooibos tea and flower petals. It is earthy and has a soft but somewhat crude bitterness and flash of spice.

"A Tranquil beverage Exploring the Depths of great Splendor" is probably the worst beer slogan I've ever heard - Short's, I don't think you needed to trademark it, no one else wants it. Still, Noble Chaos is an Oktoberfest that everyone will want. And indeed everyone should buy it.

This had a similar malt character of many other Oktoberfests but a different aroma. I liked it because it was different. Wouldn't mind trying it again.

12 ounce bottle, dated 07/08/15 (Revisit)

Bottle into goblet with deep amber/copper hue and a quickly receding white, half finger head.

Aroma of grass, hay, earth and spice, along with some toasted bread notes. Underlying caramel malt is there as well.

Taste is a much better balance between the hops and malt, with the toasted malt leading the way. Hints of cocoa and nuttiness are there as well. The hops rush in at the end, leaving the palate dry with a moderate, shortly lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel is exceptional. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, but oh so smooth. I could drink this all night long.

Overall, Noble Chaos is an easy drinking Oktoberfest with a sizable Noble hop character. While I've admittedly had few of the style, I loved this interpretation and will remember its smoothness.

Appearance - 4/5
A very hazy deep red-orange-brown. About 1 finger of head when initially poured, eventually dissipates down almost entirely. A small amount of carbonation can be seen rising upwards through the beer. Overall, a nice look and a nice color.

Smell - 3.7/5
Smells of burnt/smoky pine hops, some chocolate, perhaps a slight sweet maltiness. The smell is nice, but not really what I'm looking for in an Oktoberfest

Taste - 3.5/5
Hops, citrus, smokiness, some smoky malt sweetness. Mostly a lot of hops and smokiness. Can't really taste the malty sweetness which is supposed to be the main aspect of the Oktoberfest beer. And even so, not sure if I'm a giant fan of the taste anyway.

Mouthfeel - 3.6/5
Medium to full bodied (closer to medium). Carbonation is light to mediium. Beer is smooth and has aspects of both crispness and creaminess.

Overall - 3.5/5
This was an okay Oktoberfest. It was very smoky and hoppy, and not really what I was looking for. Even in general, I don't know if I would really be a fan of this beer. Not terrible, but I don't plan on ever getting again.

Pours a slight hazy amber with a frothy white head of an inch. Smell of yeast, biscuit-y malt, caramel, spice (pepper? maybe a bit of cinnamon), lemony citrus, a little bit of dried fruit. Taste is roasted malt, caramel, earth. citrus, a bit dry, lightly carbonated, very easy drinking, bread, it is a bit watery but still nice. Mouth feel is moderate with a light to medium body.
