Machu Beechu is a passion fruit India Pale Ale made with Rare Bird Brewpub Rooftop Honey in collaboration with Rare Bird Brewpub. At first sniff this beer is an explosion of tropical fruit scents from mango to pineapple. Brewed with Vic Secret, El Dorado, and Mandarina hops, this beer is super dank and juicy. Initial tart and fruity flavors are followed by a dry and slightly bitter finish. With final flavors of mouth-coating, Traverse City honey, this IPA is a must taste.

Gettin' a wee bit on the intoxicated side. Thanks Obama!. Anyway, this brew may have been sitting around for awhile since I got it in a $9.99 mix a six from Kroger. Let's see what we get.

Look - Super murked and almost orange though leaning towards a holden. Moderate carbonation and a finger of head.

Smell - The fruity aspects as promised on the bottle are there though they come off as almost subdued and a touch rotten. Bottles a few months ago so I doubt that has a substantial influence.

Taste - The passion fruit is there as expected but the malt takes an odd swoop on the back end that almost makes it seem as though it is dominant over the rest. Also almost get a guava presence going on.

Feel - Body is pretty thick with a low carbonation. Swallows easy but the taste in the mouth again remains a bit unusual and not exuberantly pleasant as odd as that sounds. Touches of wet cardboard are left behind despite the beer being well within date.

Overall - Weird is the word to sum this one up. The fruits and malts mixed a bit much and the obvious hop presence was tasty but again the malt backbone did not compliment. Do not get me wrong, I could drink a sixer of this and it is not an offensive beer but it also isn't quite a great beer. Try it and decide what you think.

From superspak. Bottled on 1/11/18.

Pours a honey-tea color with a head of 1/2 finger in my can-glass.

Aroma is absolutely fruity. Really great bright orange all over the place - orange gum, mandarin orange, tic tac, orange creamsickle. Slight pine and lemon in the background.

Flavor is also fruity, with elements of orange tic-tac, tart passion fruit, lemon peel, and guava. Slight hints of pineapple. The malt is nutty and bready. The flaw however is the astringent and harsh diesel/ethanol note that is the nucleus of this beer. The fruits simply surround it. It's hard to ignore. At only 8% I consider this quite a flaw.

Feel is crisp but starchy, with a medium body and a slightly resinous finish.

Overall Machu Beechu is an okay beer, it's not particularly a favorite of mine. I like the fruit notes, but the diesel/ethanol is just way too distracting. Probably wouldn't revisit.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/11/2018. Pours slightly hazy deep golden amber color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big juicy and lightly tart/tangy passion fruit, papaya, lemon, orange, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, honey, lightly toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops, passion fruit, honey, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big juicy and lightly tart/tangy passion fruit, papaya, lemon, orange, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, pepper, pine, honey, lightly toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness; and light fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of passion fruit, papaya, lemon, orange, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, guava, berry, citrus peel/zest, pepper, pine, honey, lightly toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops, passion fruit, honey, and moderate bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness and fruit tartness balance; with zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and lightly resinous/tangy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is an excellent fruited DIPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops, passion fruit, honey, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish, never aggressive. Great mix of juicy, dank, and earthy hops/fruit complexity; nice bready malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness. The hops complement the fruit extremely well. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured from bottle to tulip. Copper color and clear. A finger of white foam dissipates to a swirly cap with spotty lacing. Big, big fruity aromas: passion fruit, mango, pineapple, papaya, syrupy Mandarin oranges. Flavor is tart/sweet passion fruit, juicy orange, orange pith, cracker malt, and warm honey. Low bitterness. Clean, dry finish.

12 fl. oz bottle
Served in a snifter

This beer pours kind of a yellow orange color with a slight haze. It is topped with less than an inch of tan head that leaves little lacing.

The smell is oranges and tropical fruit with a little bit of dank.

There is a pronounces dankness from beginning to end. I get some orange peel with some bitterness in the finish.

Medium mouthfeel

This is an interesting beer. I enjoyed the experience.
