Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.70%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
nni Ale 13irteen is a dry hopped American Sour Ale with black currants. Deep ruby red in color, this American Sour Ale has aromas of tart fruit and citrus. An initial sour flavor (that’s guaranteed to satisfy any Sour beer fan) is followed by notes of dark berry. Flavors of tart black currant coat the palate before a finish that is very dry with just a touch of citrus and a slight bitterness.

I picked up a six pack of Short's Anni Ale 13irteen at The Lager Mill. I'm a big fan of this series and I'm really interested to see how this new version turns out, so lets see how it goes. 2017 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a teku.

A- The label is nice, it's got a nice design to it and it's a little eye catching. It poured an amber red color that took on more of a red hue when held to the light and it had two fingers worth of creamy off white head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left some patchy lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the fruits being the first to show up and it imparts a strong berry aroma with the currants being noticeable and it has a nice juicy aspect. Up next comes a slight vinegar and light medicinal like aroma. Up next comes the hops which impart a floral, herbal and generic hoppy aroma with just a little malts showing up impart a light bready and sweet malt like aroma. This beer has a good aroma, I like the berry aspects and the hops show up just enough.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a lower amount of higher sweetness with the fruit still being the first to show up and it imparts those big berry and currant like aspects that are just as juicy as they were in the aroma. Up next comes a little of that medicinal aspects that I got in the aroma and that's followed by the hops which impart all the same aspects that they did in the aroma and they are a little on the lighter side. Towards the end comes the malts which show up a little more this time and they impart some bready, pale malt, lightly grainy and sweet malt like aromas. On the finish comes the sourness which is pretty high and mouth puckering and it lingers a little into the aftertaste with some berries and malts also showing up. This is a good tasting beer, it's very sour, but all the key aspects come through.

M- Not the smoothest, the alcohol is well hidden, mouth puckering, a little crisp, medium bodied with a lower amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty nice, but I wish it was a little smoother.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and I thought it was a good example of the style, all the aspects that were described showed up nicely and I thought that they worked well together. This beer had ok drinkability. one would be my limit, anymore than that and it might become to intense for me. What I like the most about this beer is the is the fruitiness and that the hops show up just enough. What I like the least about this beer is the drinkability, i wish it was a little smoother. I would buy this beer again if they make it next year, but I prefer the other version and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a very sour and fairly complex beer. All in all I liked this beer, it's pretty damn intense, but it's also pretty unique too. It's not my favorite shorts beer and I think it's a good example of the style. Good job guys, this is a tasty and unique beer, keep it up.

Appearance: Pours a ruby-tinted burnt orange and is capped by a modest head; splashy lacing all over

Smell: Acetic black currant buttressed by piney hop tones

Taste: Tart black currant tones with a slight funky edge lead off, with the piney hops making an entrance in the middle; after the swallow, the acetic sourness bursts into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; puckery

Overall: I don't think of Shorts and sours in the same thought but this one is very good; really like the impact of the dry hopping on the tart black currant flavors

Thanks, daniels79, for the opportunity

Wow, this is SOUR! Sure, it's a SOUR beer. But, man, is it sour. As a relative newcomer to sour ales, I find this one to be on the extreme side. However, it is quite good.

The reddish hue is pretty. No real head to speak of. I immediately got sour berry on the nose. The taste is a swift kick to the palate - similar to the way super hoppy IPAs assault the tongue. But then you get the tart berry flavor, melded with just a touch of sweetness. People who loved Sweet Tarts candies as kids will probably enjoy this beer.

No ABV is listed on the bottle, so I was surprised to find how high it is. I would never have guessed it based on the taste and feel.

I'm glad i found this one. I will get it again next time I come across it.

-Dry hopped sour ale with black currants.

A: A light tan head quickly dissipates over a dark ice-tea coloring. Lacing is weakly adhering.

S: Black currant and black cherries, lightly dry fruitiness, with some sweet caramel cola. Picking up side notes of toffee and licorice. Sour peach, some wort sugars, and freshly baked bread crust. Very light souring factor and with a modest strength.

T: Warm fruit, apple and black currant spicing stands out. Sour fruit, peaches, lemon and sugar wort hints. Dark grapes, fruity cherries, tangy cranberries and citrus all combine with a nice tart nature. Some sour oranges and mango fruit. The finish finds a nice sour lemon twang with black currant spicing.

M: Good crackling of carbonation, thick syrup like consistency. Light carbonation, fairly heavy per style and very smooth texture.

O: Overall at $2.99 a bottle quite the bargin per style and flavor. Let this sit on your tongue awhile with small multiple swallows to mix up the range of flavors. The sour fruitiness really comes thru with warming. Tart and tangy, wide spectrum, low risk assetment and easy acidity makes this an easy try and buy. Solid good per style.

From the twelve ounce bottle into a mason jar.

Look - Amber and ruby fusion. Clarity is minimal, head doesn't stack and doesn't last very long. Carbonation is unreadable.

Smell - Smells like a wet basement after a slight flooding. Cherries are apparent but the yeast really ran wild on this one.

Taste - Cherries on the forefront exactly as expected. Levels of concrete basement with a dank cheesy factor. Sounds weird but it works as it typical of the style.

Feel - Body is on he lighter end of moderate with a supremely low level of carbonation. Swallows easy and inoffensively.

Overall - This wild doesn't have much in the way of a puckering factor nor is it overly flavorful by the standard. The cherries are apparent but they don't smack you in the face. The basement wins this beer in every sense. Only those who have at least a moderate amount of experience with the style know what I'm referencing. I like the funk, so this is a pretty good beer in my opinion. And for being just shy of 9% this beer is borderline chuggable.
