Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hazy ControversiALE is an American India Pale Ale brewed with Simcoe hops and dry hopped with Simcoe powder. Moderately hazy and copper colored, this beer has a slightly off white head with aromas of citrus, caramel, and toasted grain. This beer has more citrus notes and a juicier mouthfeel in comparison to the original ControversiALE. With a strong malt backbone, this beer is balanced and allows the Simcoe hops to shine and finishes slightly bitter.

Bottled date of 07/26/17

Appearance - Pours hazy and burnt orange in color with a sandstone colored, finger width head. Sub-par retention results in a thin, consisten layer of suds atop and a thicker ring around the edge of the glass. Lacing is air, mostly consisting of spots found around the glass.

Smell - Citrusy with hints of berry, pine and a slight bready malt undertone.

Taste - moderate notes of citrus and pine upfront, then a strong berry flavor breaks through mid-taste and strengthens as it develops. Faint 'white bread' sweetness'. Finish is berry sweetness with a bit of orange pith bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate, tingly carbonation. Slick texture with a slightly dry finish.

Overall - A tasty and fairly unique 'hazed' IPA. I wouldn't quite call it a NE-style, moreso an unfiltered IPA. My 3rd Short's beer, and by far the most interesting of the trio.

Hard pour yielding a two inch thick gorgeous tan head. Copper in appearance, deep orange if held to a light. Nose is of citrus and caramel malt blend. Taste is quite refreshing. Very thin body with a sharp bite at the end.Toasted biscuit plays with the alcohol in the taste. Medium dry finish. A bit lingering bitter aftertaste. Controversiale haze aipa is quite a refreshing summer/fall beer.

I picked up a bottle of Short's Hazy ControversiALE for $1.89 at The Lager Mill. I've had the original version of this beer many times, but now it's time to see what this hazy version is all about, so lets see how it goes. 2017 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into an IPA glass.

A_ The label looks nice, it's got a nice design and it's just a little eye catching. It poured a hazy darker orange color that took on a little more of a brighter hue when held to the light and it had about a finger and half worth of slightly creamy and slightly bubbly off white head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some spotty lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a heavy citrus rind aroma with some floral and light earthy and light green hops that go into a little bit of doughy yeast. Up next comes the malts with the rye being the first to show up and it imparts a nice spicy rye aroma and it's followed by some bready, caramel malt, pale malt, sweet malt and bread crust like aroma. This beer has a nice aroma, but I wish the hops showed up more.

T- The taste seems to be pretty similar to the aroma and it starts off with a lower amount of high sweetness with the hops still being the first to show up and they impart all the same aspects that they did in the aroma with orange and green hop aromas seeming to stick out the most Up next comes a little bit of doughy yeast and that leads into the rye which shows up a little more than it did in the aroma and imparts some nice spicy rye flavors. Up next comes the malts which also show up a little more than they did in the aroma and they impart all the same aspect with no single one seeming to stick out the most. On the finish there's a slightly higher amount of medium bitterness with a hoppy and spicy rye aftertaste. This is a nice tasting beer, but I wish the hops showed up more.

M- A little smooth, slightly over bitter, slightly cloying, on slightly thicker side of being medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel was nice, but I wish it was less sweet and bitter.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and it's a solid example of the style, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be and I don't find it to be all that different that the original version except for the appearance. This beer had ok drinkability, I think one is enough for me. What I like the most about this beer is the appearance, it lives up to it's name. What I like the least about this beer is the taste and drinkability, they both could use a good amount of work so it's not so rough around the edges. I don't think I would buy this beer again unless I knew it was super fresh, but I wouldn't turn one down and I would recommend it if you want something more on the malty and rye side. All in all I didn't mind this beer, but I just wasn't a big fan of it and I don't see why it's different enough from the original to get it's own release. It's not a favorite short's beer and it's one of my least favorite ones that I've had from them recently and it's just a little above average for a rye IPA. Better luck next time guys, this one could use a little more work to make it stand out more.

Definitely not something that would warrant the word hazy on label. Not any hazier than most beers. It tastes a little stronger than regular contriversale. Id love to try this with a little less malt character.

Pours light hazy, copper. Thick, medium, off white head fades slowly to Rocky head with good lacing.

Smells caramel malt, citrus, light pine and toasted hints and hint of dankness.

Tastes citrus peel, citrus, earthy and piney, bready malt. Finish is dry with citrus peel and light toasted malts. Medium body and creamy medium carbonation. Good and bitter finish.

Brief Review:

O: Short's hitting us hard with these hazy IPAs lately. This is sort of half-baked though as they're trying to haze up the base beer that is Controversi-ALE. The Slurm bros. turned out way better. There's nothing "NE" about this other than the appearance, which is a bit too amber. Nose is lacking a lot of character, too. The base beer, as well as the double, Controversius Maximus, are way better than this.

Recommendation: With Cat Grass coming up, and so many other Short's beers out there right now, don't feel bad if you miss this one.

A - Pours a hazy amber with a three finger foamy off white head. Nice amount of spotty lacing.

S - Aroma is tangerine, grapefruit and caramel malts.

T - The taste is orange peel, grapefruit, caramel malts and strong piney hops. The finish has a lingering bitterness.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation. Soft mouthfeel with a crisp dry finish.

O - A decent IPA. The hops seemed to dominate the flavor. Still a nice easy drinking IPA.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/26/2017. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, toasted biscuit, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper, pine, toasted biscuit, light caramel, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon/orange peel, pepper, pine, toasted biscuit, light caramel, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and slightly resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is an awesome IPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/pine hops and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink the with mellowly bitter/drying finish. Very juicy, vibrant, and lightly dank hops; with a nice balancing malt backbone that is never sweet. Very similar to the regular; but less bitter, more juicy/vibrant on hops, and smoother to drink. A really enjoyable offering.

Surprised to see this beer at my local store. Have not heard of it, but then again I'm kinda out of the loop. Im not as big of a beer nut as I used to be. I'm not saying that I don't drink lots of beer I just don't chase it anymore. So, this beer was great and I'm glad I picked up a six pack.

Poured from bottle to tulip. Normally I only get a bottle or two of ControversiALE when it hits the stores, glad I got a full six of this one. There's similarities between the two: unmistakable Simcoe notes of pine, citrus (grapefruit, orange pith) , and earthy floral notes, and caramel and toast malt. This one adds a hazy, turbid copper body and a bigger blast of both bright citrus zest and malty sourdough flavors.
