Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
Loaded with hops like an IPA, yet drinks like a Pale Ale, we simply decided to call it a Strong Pale Ale. The fragrant, earthy citrus laced nose is instantly detectable. Large amounts of toasted grains and high alpha Simcoe hops form a perfect union that creates the cool sensation of toasted sourdough covered with zesty grapefruit hop marmalade.

Cost Plus Eastern Market pick-up: anyone in Detroit wanting anything Shorts should really check them out.

Simple label, black and white. No date.
Pours somewhat cloudy with slowly dissipating white laced head. Burnt orange. Smells of sweet strawberries and citrus with great hop aroma. Hits weaker than expected - the smell leads you to believe big IPA yet in reality some citrus and medium to low bitterness. Nice lingering funkiness.

Very interesting brew. What is it? IPA or simply PA. Short's is king in this arena- experimentation, creativity, controversy...

Not my style - did not care for it at all. Left a bad taste and feel in my mouth.
A friend accidentally dropped a bottle on his driveway. It left a stain for several months, despite heavy rains.

So I am not sure if I am rating the correct beer or not because the label on my beer has what looks like a revamped 80s old school label on it and the beer is only listed as an India Pale Ale not and American, also I wouldn't doubt that this beer is indeed an American Pale Ale based on the way it tastes. Honestly, I am surprised this beer doesn't have better ratings than it does on this site. If I am trying to review the beer honestly it is comparable to a dulled down version of Two Hearted by Bell's. The sweetness note is less citrusy in my opinion and the finish is a lot less bitter (in my opinion that's a bad thing, but I could see this being a lot more palatable to the masses). The color is a deep amberish color and the beer seems to hold a nice head throughout drinking it. Definitely worth picking up a 6 pack, also just for reference the beer I am referring to has a black label with "orange", "green" and "pink" lettering on the bottle (but take that for what its worth from a color blind dude)

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a nice amber color with a bit of haze and a white head. Nose brings some really nice citrus and floral hops. Strong notes coming through throughout, getting better as it warms. The taste brings a bit of sweet malt without as many hops as were in the nose. Good feel with a moderate amount of bitterness. Drinks well and I was glad to try one of the "normal" offerings from Short's, as it had been awhile since I'd visited with their APA and the like.

Draft. Stopped in the brewery and had a little sampler of several beers. Light amber color with a slight white head. Nice hop aroma with citrus. The taste has the classic citrus rind taste along with a slight touch of spice. Earthy. Medium mouthfeel. Not bad but jsut not really a stand out in my opinion.

Hangin Frank pours an ever so slightly cloudy medium copper color with a nice beige head that fades quickly but leaves very sticky lace.

The aroma is very nice with a citrus hop character that is well supported with malts. The malt is nice and biscuity with a good dose of toasted character. The hops strike me as mostly orange and grapefruit, but with a touch of peach.

The toasty character is much more apparent in the flavor and sort of gets in the way of the hops. I do still pick up on some orange, peach and pine notes, but they are not nearly as evident in the flavor. I am really wondering about this being an IPA since it tastes much more like a pale ale.

The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium and has a wonderfully easy finish that leaves some hops on my palate.

Probably the best aspect of this beer is the drinkability. There is just something about it that I dig and I think this could be one of Short's most sessionable beers, or at least to my taste preference it is. It could perhaps use a bit less of the toasted malt, but overall this brew really hits the spot and all without any crazy ingredients.

Poured into a Portsmouth Brewing branded tulip.
Love the label concept-named for a ghost that haunts Hemmingway's old stomping grounds.
Pour hazy burnt amber with a head that dissipates into a thin lacing on top and along the sides. Muted earthy citrus hops smell. Resiny and piney hops with a dominating yet clean toasted malt back bone. Tastes like a solid pale ale at first, malty but I can see why it's classified as an IPA. It's got a nice sharp grapefruit bite and yeast finish.
Thanks to Another6Pack for a change to give this one a try.

Appearance: Light golden-amber pour with a relatively large head, some lacing

Smell: light citrus, slightly hoppy, nice light sweet malts

Taste: Relatively straightforward IPA. Lightly hopped with a present but not overbearing malt backbone, slightly sweet with orange, grapefruit and perhaps tangerine

Mouthfeel: Perhaps a bit overcarbonated

Overall: Nice to taste a Short's beer that isn't designed to taste like a christmas tree or easter bunny or some other random flavor. Good IPA.

12 ounce bottle, dated 12/29/15.

Bottle into snifter with hazy orange hue and one-finger, white head that slowly dissipates to a ring.

The primary aroma that I get is bready, crackery malt with some doughy yeast. Underneath all this is a generic citrus/earthy/grassy hop note.

Taste generally follows, with the hops showing up slightly more so than in the aroma.

Mouthfeel is medium-light with an appropriate amount of bitterness that lingers slightly. I get a juicy vibe, overall.

Overall, ControversiALE doesn't come close to its description of "a tribute to Simcoe hops". This beer would be better suited in the American Pale Ale style.

A- Slightly hazy golden-orange with a white head. Retention is pretty good. A nice coat of lace sticks to the pint glass.

S- I get a lot of peach right off the bat. Beyond that there is definitely a good deal of citrus fruit, caramel malt and bread.

T- Mostly hops again. I get a good amount of light sweet fruit, citrus, pine and floral notes. A backbone of pale caramel malt and yeast lending bread. Grapefruit, peach.

MF- Smooth highly carbonated body with a creamy feel. A definite presence of bitterness.

DB- Flavorful IPA that goes down easily. Doesn't exactly strike me as one of the best IPAs but holds it's own with many modern examples of the style.

Poured from 12oz bottle.

A- Pours a coppery orange color that shows light haze to it. One finger light tan head shows light retention. Long streaks of lace left on the sides of the glass.

S- Tropical fruits galore. Tons of citrus, pineapple, and mango. Caramel malts show off more of a sweetness as well that goes along with the hops. Ending shows a little bit of alcohol which tingles the nose and light piney hops.

T- Sweet tropical fruits right off the bat in the hop bite. Caramel malts come out and stay with this beer being a good undertone overall. The piney hops come out a little bit more in the ending with the alcohol showing up in the very end for a nice crisp bite.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Tropical hops and light caramel malts left on the palate. Aftertaste is mostly light alcohol, piney hops, and caramel malts. No real off flavors in this beer. Balanced overall with a perfect combo of sweetness and bitterness. Medium alcohol drying on the palate.

O- This was a very drinkable IPA and I drank a sixer very fast! The ABV is low enough that it doesn't do too much to destroy the palate and drinking many in a row is good. Another great beer from Short's!
