Brewed by:
Short's Brewing Company
Michigan, United States

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Spring

Notes / Commercial Description:
Loaded with hops like an IPA, yet drinks like a Pale Ale, we simply decided to call it a Strong Pale Ale. The fragrant, earthy citrus laced nose is instantly detectable. Large amounts of toasted grains and high alpha Simcoe hops form a perfect union that creates the cool sensation of toasted sourdough covered with zesty grapefruit hop marmalade.

Bottled 2/1/16; drank 3/13/16 @ the Yarchives.

Poured from the bottle into a glass.

Murky orange appearance.

A rough pour yielded a big eggshell head; a curtain of frothy lace.

Caramel, peanut butter & faint orange citrus notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Peanut butter & mild caramel flavors up front; a faint, dry grapefruit bite on the finish. Below average American barleywine vibes here; drinkable but little else. I've had my last.

This beer Seems a bit weak as an IPA, and the hops are a little bitter. Most interesting is a nutty taste. It's a good beer - just with a bitter aftertaste that's more than well balanced.

Poured from a bottle into a New Belgium tulip. The pour is burnt amber, hazy, and sports a half finger of off-white head. On the nose I get cedar, pine, and marmalade.

Medium-light body with a balanced flavor and a firm feel. Decent malt backbone provides ample sweetness. The hop profile is leafy and husky and a bit mild on the citrus notes for my tastes. It reminds me a lot of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but not quite as assertive.

My first beer from Shorts and it's a bit of a disappointment. Given what I've heard about this brewer, I thought I would like an IPA offering from them more than I did. It's not that there's anything particularly wrong with it, it just drinks more like a pale ale than an IPA.

My bro-in-law brought this to 4th July festivities. It poured an orangish with thin white head that is not leaving much of a lace. The scent has hints of pine. The taste is bitter with pine backdrop. The Mouthfeel is medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it's a good beer but has that common twang of most Shorts beer.

Short's ControversiALE is a nice blend of traditional IPA notes and modern hops with a crackery light malt undertone.

A: deep ruddy gold with a finger of white lace that compacted quickly.

S: tropical and underripe peach notes. Earthy and inviting.

T: Baby aspirin astringent with bitter orange and sewery hop underneath. Malt is light and not intrusive.

M: Smooth draw with dryness abounding. Slightly chalky finish with rough tongue feel.

O: solid modern hop IPA. First Short's, definitely not my last if I can help it.

Clear amber with a moderate sized, beige bubbly head that recedes to almost nothing with some a couple of branches of lacing.

Caramel aromas first with some sort of mild fruit, like strawberry/blueberry orange juice...?

Flavors of light pine, with bark...walnuts, and peanuts? And mushrooms? WTF?

This is another odd one from Shorts. I really don't get it.

12 oz. bottle, bottled on 02/05/16. Acquired a single bottle of this stuff as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - A ruddy caramel orange pour, lots of dark sediment twirling silently in the glass. One finger of frothy soapy white head that stays awhile and leaves a nice ring & surface skimming. Some good scattered soapy lacing. Appears adequately carbonated. Looks nice.

S - An earthy, herbal, dirty, spicy hop aroma. Notes of horseradish and juicy mango.

T - Taste is the same: an earthy, herbal, dirty, & spicy hop profile. Subtle juicy stone fruits - mangos, peaches, grapefruit. Dirthy, spicy, & bitter. Maybe a bit of rye malt in there? Dry.

M - Feel is smooth, crisp, clean, mildly fruity / bitter. Lightly juicy feel. Dry & bitter on the finish. Medium-light body, easy drinking, good carb.

Overall, a nice American IPA, maybe slightly above average grade. Glad to have tried it, but there's nothing extraordinary about it that separates too much from the rest of the pack.

Short's Brew ControversiALE -----4/5.

This IPA was a generic one, and that's the best I can really say. While it has a decent ABV, the flavor isn't really there for me. It's nowhere near as bitter as I had hoped, and while it smells pretty good... I just don't think the quality is really there.

The is my second Short's taste and it is another good one. A bit dry, but interestingly so (over the top).

It starts off deep yellow. Looking like a bigger IPA than it is. The aroma is rich and complex hoppy smelling, but you wish it were more pungent and stronger in general.

The taste is very dry. Bitter all the way with no sweet. Although this IS one of those mostly one dimensional ales, it does so in the taste with so much hops that you can't help but like it. It's like taking big blobs of bitter hops oil on your tongue.

This is a great Short's. I found myself upping the ratings as I drank it. Highly recommended.

Picked this up for around 3 bucks. Into a mason jar glass.
A - Very hazy amber brown color with a 1/4 inch of head that pulls back to some great lacing.
S - Good grapefruit hops fairly good cracker malt smell.
T - Very good balanced IPA easy bitter grapefruit hops with a slight bitter finish. Tasty.
M - Light to medium body. Decent IPA

Overall these guys nailed it on this one a great tasting IPA.

Aroma is dank hops and citrus/fruit/tea. The flavor is citrus, grapefruit, hops/slight hop resin, earthy, malts, very slightly coarse and a mix of bitter, tart and slightly sour in the finish.

Bottled on 2/5/16. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a hazy burnt orange with an off-white head that fades leaving great retention and decent lacing. The aromas are musty, earthy and woodsy with a nice amount of ripe citrus. Lots of grapefruit. Some fresh grass. Malts are there as well with some subtle hints of fresh dough. The flavors are nice and seem to follow the nose. Lots of sticky grapefruit with some fresh pine. More grass. Solid clean bitterness. Malts are there, but don't takeover. Very crisp. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is nice. It's on the lighter side of medium-bodied with active carbonation. Very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a nice brew. It's clean and pretty refreshing. Nice bitterness and hop flavor. Enjoyable and fun to drink. I like it.

Picked it up at local liquor store because I couldn't resist the pun. Love it. Clear, light honey, not much head though the foam has nice lacing. Smell is mango/apricot and bread, Perfect mouthfeel-- slight carbonation up front with velvet finish. Finish a bit dry underneath the fruit -- a bit of grapefruit astringent. Beautifully put together -- yum.

Poured into a small flute glass, 8 oz. Amber color with good carbonation. A lot of grapefruit throughout this beer. In the nose, taste, back of your throat, and coating your tongue. It literally tastes like you were given grapefruit beer. Interesting IPA and super bitter!

We recently began getting distro of Short's B.C. beers here in south-central PA & I am pretty excited about it! I have known those guys for years, between BA fests in BOS & my (usually) annual excursion to Madison, WI for the GTMW. I don't care if they are in bottles since I never expected them to come to me!

From the bottle: "A state of prolonged public dispute or debate, usually concerning a matter of opinion. The word was coined from the [L]atin [']controversia['], as a composite of controversus - 'turned in an opposite direction,' from contra - 'against' - and vertere 'to turn, or versus (see verse), hence, 'to turn against.' Perennial areas of controversy include history, religion, philosophy, politics and beer labels."; "Handmade by people who care. (tm)"

I Pop!ped the cap and let go with a heavy-handed pour to create both controversy & just under three fingers of dense, rocky, tawny head with great retention that left behind sticky acing as it fell. My controversy is who is going to clean that up? Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled like winter in a pine forest! Mmmm. My hops jones is suddenly kicking up. Mouthfeel was a little thin, frankly, not enough to be considered watery, but less than I would expect in the style. The taste was very much of pine - needles, cones, tar, resin, sap, all of it! Finish was dry, but cool & minty, not at all bitter. This is the kind of AIPA that I really like.

12 ounce bottle, dated 12/29/15.

Bottle into snifter with hazy orange hue and one-finger, white head that slowly dissipates to a ring.

The primary aroma that I get is bready, crackery malt with some doughy yeast. Underneath all this is a generic citrus/earthy/grassy hop note.

Taste generally follows, with the hops showing up slightly more so than in the aroma.

Mouthfeel is medium-light with an appropriate amount of bitterness that lingers slightly. I get a juicy vibe, overall.

Overall, ControversiALE doesn't come close to its description of "a tribute to Simcoe hops". This beer would be better suited in the American Pale Ale style.

Not my style - did not care for it at all. Left a bad taste and feel in my mouth.
A friend accidentally dropped a bottle on his driveway. It left a stain for several months, despite heavy rains.

Aroma is initially caramelly, with muted citrus and pith notes and a piney, lightly resiny hop profile. Grapefruit and tangerine emerge. Becomes earthy and herbal as it warms.

Flavor is also very malty, with a big toasted malt backbone, and mere hints of citrus tartness. Resiny throughout, the finish is overly bitter and a bit harsh. Not sure of age on this one, but I'm guessing it's better fresher.

Pours a clear amber into a pint glass. A solid 2 inch head that stays for a few minutes before it fades and leaves cling white lacing on the glass. Nose is mildly disappointing. Most of the other Shorts offerings I’ve had were overly hopped. This one is rather understated. Some piney, fruity notes, less intense than expected. Taste is amazing, I prefer this one over Humalupalicious. A bit mellow for an IPA, it’s really more of an APA. I’d compare the taste to Oddside’s Citra Pale ale. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but that’s in keeping with the overall profile of this beer. Overall I really enjoyed this one. Even at 6.5% ABV, I’m tempted to call this one a session IPA. I’m headed back to the fridge to grab another one.

Received as an extra in a trade. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a slightly hazy orange copper hue with a thin one finger head that fades quickly to leave a thin blanket and light halo.

S - Aromas of sweeter malts, little bit of candy sugar, old earthy hops. Not super fresh smelling by any means.

T - Taste is similar to the nose, sweeter malts, old earthy hops, little bit of...I dunno, stale bread? Pleasant lingering bitters. I get some alcohol too, which is a bit surprising considering the ABV.

M - Mouthfeel is crisp, though somehow boozy at only 5.5%. Baffling.

O - Overall I wasn't really a fan of this beer at all. Like most of the Short's beers I've had it just doesn't do anything for me. Being fresh may have helped this one, but, doubtful.

Great aroma. Complexity of flavor in which the grapefruit is especially evident. It's a lovely color, like tea with milk, and a very nature-y brew overall.

Bottling date 12/15/14
Poured into DFH Signature IPA glass

Appearance - 4/5
A deep orange color. Very hazy, but not totally opaque. Several fingers of bubbly beige head. A good amount of carbonation can be seen rising up the glass (partially no doubt to the DFH glass, designed to increase carbonation flow).

Smell - 4/5
Strong grapefruit pine hops with some resin aspects. Overall the smell is really excellent. The grapefruit really does it for me.

Taste - 4/5
Delicious grapefruit citrus flavors, along with pine and resin. The hop flavors are quite mellow. There is little bitterness, allowing the flavors of the hops to be perceived more clearly.

Mouthfeel - 4/5
Slightly fuller than medium bodied. Slightly bitter, but overall fairly smooth going down. The carbonation is a medium amount of medium-light intensity.

Overall - 4/5
This was a definitely solid IPA. I would get this again. The hop flavors were fantastic yet not overwhelming (I'm not a "hop-head"). I loved the grapefruit aspects of the flavor and the medium-full body.

(Served in a teku)
A- This beer pours a touch of hazy to a deep aged copper body with a think wispy head and a slow carbonation of tiny bubbles.

S- There is a perfumed green juicy hops full in the nose with some soft caramel malt notes in the finish.

T- The juicy green hops are dry in character with some unripe lime flavors and a citrus pith in the slightly dry finish. There is a resin hop pungency that lingers but no bitterness with it.

M- There is a nice light mouthfeel with a crisp fizz that boost the hops flavor

O- This has a nice full hop flavor with lots of good depth to the hops and they are well supported by the malt bill. Very drinkable but a touch to dry in the finish to make it sessionable.

Poured from bottle into tulip glass, cloudy, hazy orange in color, with two fingers of thick white head. Great retention, thick lacing. Citrus and tropical fruit aroma, with some pine. Slightly bready, mandarin orange syrup. Taste follows, with some dry hop bitterness on the end. Highly sessionable. Would be interested in seeing this one in cans, a la All Day IPA.
