Style: American Imperial Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A double red ale that seems to indicate an intensity of flavor simply by it’s dark reddish brown appearance. Subtle aromas of candy, brown sugar, and toasted malt seem reluctantly released from the depths of this full bodied beast. Raisins, figs, and burnt caramel are among some of the sweeter flavors up front, before giving way to a roasted cocoa like bitterness that becomes magnified by high alpha hops. Considering the initial overall sweetness, it’s a heightened bitterness that dominates the finish.

Bought this and poured into a snifter, really enjoyed it. Its appearance is very nice and it has a great taste. Very nice brew for a chilly evening, thought it seemed to kinda have a warming effect, that i welcomed for a February release. Will buy again without a doubt

From a bottle. Very unique style for me. The smell and taste are very wine-like to me, tannins and some grape must tang. Lots of warming burn in the end too. In the end, I neither love it or hate it. I won't seek this one out next time around, but I will recommend it as it might be in somebody else's wheelhouse.

12oz, no dates listed on the bottle
Deschutes tulip glass

A: Pours a deep, amber red color. Initially I had about a half finger of off white almost tannish head. Some sticky lacing bits are left on the glass as the head fades. Lots like good carb streaming up the sides of the glass.

S: Smells of piney, earthy hops. Also some biscuity malts are in there. There is some spicy notes in there, rye? Lots of sweet caramel malts I take away.

T: There is a sharp bite on the tip of the tongue. You get some of those earthy hops. Then in the mid mouth you are met with some of those biscuity malts. The back end has some fairly strong bitterness. Like another member mentioned, it's almost similar to an ESB of some sort. It's fairly dry too. Don't know ABV but don't taste it.

M: Medium bodied brew. The bitterness lingers for a while.

750ml bottle. #199 of 780.

Pours into my glass a deep maroon red with a solid inch of creamy khaki head on top of the brew. Good clarity with patchy lacing and a head that lingers on. Aromas start with a big dose of caramel malt alongside some roasted notes. Citrusy, piney hops are quite well placed in there too. Toasty with a fruity undercurrent as well, but big on the caramel. Slightly oxidized as well.

First sip brings a caramel / toasted malt upfront that flows into fruity, somewhat doughy notes as well. It moves into citric, earthy hops, definitely Cascades, but time has taken its toll and the hops have faded quite a bit. A bit nutty as it flows down with more fruitiness and a good bit of bitterness. Finishes smooth and malty with a bit of oxidation on the end as well.

Mouthfeel brings a solid body with a nice creaminess as it flows down. Mellow carbonation throughout. Nice and chewy, it's a big red ale that also goes down smooth and is quite refreshing. Overall, it's not my favorite from the series that I've tried so far but it's still a solid, tasty brew. Wish I would have had it fresh because the hops have faded quite a bit. I've been loving trying these Imperial Series beers, cheers to Shorts!

Enjoyed it in a snifter from draft. Beautiful mahogany color, beautiful beige head and very nice veiled lacing. The smell is pungent and malty. Great taste with caramel and spice. Nice and sweet and full bodied.

poured super cold from a 12oz bottle to a shaped sun king pint a semi-translucent deep amber with a wisp of a short lasting head.

aroma of big earthy hops and brown sugars in the wayback.

very subtle, almost non-existent carbonation, yet it's not at all flat (?), medium bodied and hot.

big hops all over the place, as advertised, sweetness almost covered up entirely, but evident after its down the hatch.

interesting, but probably not going to down a sixer of these.

From bottle to tulip. Deep, rich garnet color with a few fingers of substantial head that leaves pretty attractive lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, warm sugary dark fruits. Flavor is figs, plums, caramel, biscuit, with a bitterness that's more prominent on the finish and becomes less prominent as the glass is drained. The aroma and flavor increase as the ale warms, the feel becomes thicker and silky.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a 8 oz snifter.

A- pours a dirty dark copper with a 1 finger tan head. Thick wall of lacing resides nearly immediately.

S- brown sugar, dark fruits, slight cherry, toast, pine.

T- toasted and caramel malts. Sweet dark fruits and brown sugar, very bitter almost astringent pine.

M- medium body and carbonation. Dry finish and bitterness leaves aftertaste.

O- good beer but like the other Short's beers I have had it falls short. Liked the aromas of this beer but flavors are to bitter and lacking some sweetness that is in the nose.

Bottle sample shared by alexsdad06.

Pours a dark clear brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted malt and hoppy aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy malty sweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration.

This is a standout beer.

Pours a red with medium white head lasts a bit with light lacing

Smells amazing. I really loved the smell. Sweet malty hoppy. Earthy just great.

Sweet malty and nice hops well balanced. Medium body with medium carbonation but the carbonation feels like it's a lot smoother smaller bubbles maybe. Finish is hops with some sweetness.

I definitely enjoyed this and will enjoy again

If there was something in between a 3.75 I would give it that for most of the scoring categories. I picked this bottle up at the brewpub in July. Pours with a dark red/light brown color, the head fades rather quickly and leaves some lacing.

Smells of hops (with age on them, kind of like an aged barleywine but not really),dark fruits, caramel and a little molasses.

I was surprised to still find this beer tasting pretty bitter but also smooth, fruity and very malty. I would love to have had this fresh but I really have no complaints with this bottle.

Received this brew in a trade with northernbrews some time ago. I've saved this one for second from last because it seems like the most normal of all the beers. It better be good! Drank from my Stone India Pale Ale flute.

Appearance- Pours a beautiful blood red with an amazing one finger beige head that's creamy and tight. The head remains the entire beer leaving loads of spotty sticky lacing.
Smell- Nicely fruity and bitterly hoppy you can tell these hops have some time on them. Had the trading card not told me these were Cascades, I never would have guessed. Plenty malty as well as quite a bit of caramel corn and red licorice really permeates the glass.
Taste- Starts with a bit of sticky piney hops that aren't anywhere as fruity as they smell. Earthy and somewhat raw the hops aren't so much bitter as they are a backdrop for the malt. Combined they are very candy like, again with the red licorice comparison. That's just exactly what it tastes like to me. The finish may add a splash of bitterness but definitely not much.
Mouthfeel- Very full body with a nice creamy feel and very little carbonation which is surprising considering the amazing head this thing maintains.
Drinkability- Surprisingly delicious as this brew has held up very well over the past two years. I'm sure this was a drippy gooey hoppy deliciousness fresh (think Nugget Nectar) but somehow manages to still be good. Glad I got to try this for sure. Thanks Jeff!
