Dammit it's true this beer is the most black licorice tasting beer I ever tasted which isn't bad since it's balanced but I wanted some good coffee and smoke flavors to really enjoy the style it's listed as. Quite easy to drink though the licorice does take a backseat after some sips like the time I drank too much ouzo in Canada. Long story but can't stand it now. This beer actually balances it pretty well... Curious...

Tan head, almost a full inch, a lot of brown and black in the color of the beer itself. Aroma was roasty and bitter. Was looking for more hop aroma.

Viscosity is almost stout like on this one, drinks like a meal. Mild licorice notes. Gets kind of a complex mouthfeel, the melding of bitterness, coffee flavor, licorice, alcohol heat, toffee and caramel, old dark prune fruit, smokiness.

A lot going on. I can appreciate that, even if it isn't the easiest beer to drink. Good for sharing, small quantities.

Another dark beer review, another reference to being brown and black. A lighter shade makes up the head portion of this beer that is well above 1/2". She's clump, she's clump, she's clump, she's the retention and lacing on my glass. Aroma came off on that hoppy tip like a schwarz should.

Taste takes on a more viscous, stout like meets rauchbier thing. Perhaps that is where the 'sustenance' comes from. Keep that licorice out of the mouthfeel, drink colder. Bitter, a little alcohol, could use a tad of sweetness to balance things out. Dark fruit be creepin much like the licorice as it warms.

I could think of some things that would improve this beer, but as it is, its still good/decent.

Poured from bottle to pilsner glass. Brew is color of dark chocolate,o cofe beans. Thin off white head, a finger full, that settles to a little cap with no lacing. Not much rentention. Smell is toasted malts, sweet dark fruits, raisin, black bread. Taste follows, with a sweet, raisiny tang upfront and a bitter bite on the end. Got this as part of the Spring variety pack; all have been winners. Highly recommend.
