The bottle says this is "For when you're hungry and thirsty," which fits me right now. I'm hoping it sates both those feelings nicely.

It is indeed black (I expected no less), but some blood-red light shines around the edges when I hold the glass up to light. Looks moderately viscous. Topped with a fizzy, off-white head that looked like it would dissipate quickly but actually hung on for a while.

The smell reminds me a bit of cola, but not nearly as sweet. Maybe hints of dark fruit as well. It's a relatively weak aroma (maybe typical for the style, I don't know), but a good one.

I can taste just a little bit of hops, which I think is what made me think "cola" on the smell. There's a base of roasty malt, but it doesn't add any bitterness until the aftertaste, when it lingers a short while.

The mouthfeel is smooth and a little bit chewy, with a fair amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a good beer, though not a great beer. I'm glad I got a sixer and I'll enjoy the rest of it.

12oz bottle poured into pint glass on 04/09/2011.
Pours dark- definitely a black bier. The head is off-white, dissipates quickly, and leaves little lace. The nose is full of caramel, dark fruit, a few dabs of maltiness scattered about. The taste offers up some coffee, vanilla, slight roast, and chocolate. Medium body and medium carbonation. Overall I like this offering from Shorts. Very drinkable.

Thanks to LostCook for the generous extra.

Pours very black with a finger of tan head. Can't see through the black when held to the light. Head fades to a thin tan line.

Sweet roast dominates the nose. Some chocolate. Reminds me more of a milk stout than a schwarzbier.

First drink reveals the smokey, roast malt. Carbonation hits the tongue pretty hard.
Lacking the smoothness I was expecting. Quite a bitter aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is lacking for me due to the "shock" every drink has on my tastebuds. Drinkability is average. I had no problem finishing the beer. I was just left wanting more.

Appearance: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a large wine glass. Pours a deep, dark brown with a one-finger head that recedes pretty rapidly. Areas of reddish brown are visible where the light shines through, and there is a bubbly ring of lacing left behind after the head dissipates.

Smell: Wonderful toasted malt aroma, as well as chocolate, coffee, caramel, and molasses. Very earthy and inviting.

Taste: Big smokey, earthy flavor. Getting lots of coffee, dark fruits, and toasted malt. Texture is pretty thick and creamy, and the alcohol provides a nice warming sensation. To sum it up, I guess I would categorize it as a lighter, smoother version of a stout.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, smooth, with adequate carbonation and just the right amount of bitterness.

Drinkability: Compared to other dark beers, I'd say this one fairs pretty well. Enough malt and bitterness to keep you interested, but not enough to prevent this from being a decent session beer.

Another dark beer review, another reference to being brown and black. A lighter shade makes up the head portion of this beer that is well above 1/2". She's clump, she's clump, she's clump, she's the retention and lacing on my glass. Aroma came off on that hoppy tip like a schwarz should.

Taste takes on a more viscous, stout like meets rauchbier thing. Perhaps that is where the 'sustenance' comes from. Keep that licorice out of the mouthfeel, drink colder. Bitter, a little alcohol, could use a tad of sweetness to balance things out. Dark fruit be creepin much like the licorice as it warms.

I could think of some things that would improve this beer, but as it is, its still good/decent.

A-Pours a dark brown color with mocha thin head and moderate lacing about the glass.
S-Coffee, dark chocolate, licorice and malt dominate the aroma with milder notes of caramel and hops.
T-Burnt malty coffee flavor with milder citrusy elements and a finish and afternotes of smokey oakey earthiness which lingers on and on.
M-Creamy but not thick, it has moderate carbonation with a little bitterness at the finish.
D-This beer got better as it warmed. I started out with it from the fridge and didn't think much of it at first, but by the end it had a respectable taste and feel and turned out quite tasty.

I drank my sustenance from a pint glass. (It's just fun to say). It poured a light head and the color was a light black/dark as can be brown. The aroma for me was strong on roasted malts, chocolate malt in particular, with a bit of sweetness. I was also picking up the slightest hints of some fruity, estery goodness.

The first sip gave me roasted malts again, but cleanly so, balanced by hop bitters, and suggestions of burnt caramel that fade to sweet. The hops have a nice, well played presence here, balanced with the sweet and the bitter of the malts themselves. Nothing is heavy handed. There is a medium body, with decent carbonation, but just a tad runny. The drinkability of this beer is great.

Pours very dark with a little bit of color shining through as you hold it up to the light. After the pour, there's a nice tall, fluffy head on top. Great looking brew!

The aroma is a nice, roasted malt meets molasses type of scent. It's not that pungent, but it definitely has a dark, robust feel to already.

The taste has nice complex, dark flavors, from roasted malts and coffee to peanuts. Its body is relatively light considering it's dark stature and bold flavors.

The aftertaste has a nice peanut/coffee bitterness flavor that lingers for a good while, leaving a slight palate altering taste.

Overall, they don't mince word when they say this beer is like a meal. It's rich, bold, dark et al. It's not necessarily a hot summer day brew, yet its light body allows for easy drinking. It's full of dark flavors that would be great for a BBQ. Think of it similar to a nice, black stout, but with a sweeter profile. And since the ABV wasn't readily available, I'm guessing it has a fairly low %, since I'm getting much more flavor than I am buzz. Very tasty brew.

poured from a 12 oz bottle into a brewery pint glass

opaque in color a one finger mocha colored head with minimal lacing

smells of sweet malt and toffee maybe brown sugar on the nose

taste of black licorice and milk chocolate up front with the biting bitter coffee and some notable hops in the end

mouthfeel is rather light very drinkable could definitely drink more than one in a sitting

overall a good drinkable dark beer that is not too filling but still has flavor and is relatively complex for a lower abv beer
