Notes / Commercial Description:
Strawberry Short’s Cake is a Golden Ale brewed with the addition of strawberries and milk sugar. The flavors of shortcake and fresh strawberries transform this beer into rose-colored party nectar that is pleasingly sweet with hints of cream. Biscuit flavors and aromas arise from the use of large amounts of Victory malt.

Solid beer, hint of sour saved it for me. 1 is plenty.

if you like outlandish flavored ales and funky buddha isnt available where you live, i cant think of anyone who does them better than shorts. this is another absurd idea, but its as well executed as i think it probably could be. the cool thing about these flavored shorts beers, this one included, is that even though the flavor is always over the top, anything but subtle, it always seems quite natural, and they often taste exactly like they say they will. the strawberry in here is sweet for sure, but it tastes like real fruit, and there is plenty of it. the cream aspect i dont get a whole lot of, more general sweetness than anything from the lactose. the bready cake aspect is there too in the malt, really pretty clever with the strawberries. the one real critique i have of this, outside of it being a bit of a novelty than i dont care to drink too many of, is that its really thin in the mouthfeel, almost more like a soda pop than a beer bubbly as they come but really light and almost watery. a bit more grain structure would make this even more cakey and appealing to me, but i respect this for being as good as it is. i think i prefer the carrot cake one to this, but its still highly original and pretty tasty for what it is!

Short's Brewing Co. "Strawberry Short's Cake"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, coded "05/24/17 11:28:43" and sampled on 08/22/17
$2 @ Weis, Conshohocken, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Darker than I thought it would be, it's a hazy deep copper that's almost brown. The label reads "Golden Ale". The tan head didn't last long at all and there's clearly something solid floating on the surface. I tried to get it out and it broke in half. Ahh, there's more of it at the bottom of the glass. It might be yeast that sedimented and combined and then broke apart into pieces. It's kind of off-putting though, because who knows what it is. Anyway, it smells mostly of caramelish malt but there's a berry-like fruitiness to it as well. The flavor, however, is packed with what really comes across as fresh strawberry. That's a treat. It even has some of that vegetal flavor you get when you're eating strawberries. Very nice. And it's nicely balanced. It's sweetish, but not too sweet, and it's certainly not cloying. I don't get a lot of bitterness, although there's some, and it still manages to finish mainly dry. Even the malt that's there in the finish doesn't seem sweet or overly malty; it is a touch toasty though. Overall, nicely done. I recall that they did a key lime beer that was quite nice as well. Medium-bodied with a smooth, median carbonation.

12 fl. oz bottle
Served in a pint glass

This beer pours a ruddy amber color with a slight haze. It is topped with an inch of tan head that leaves pretty much no lacing.

It smells like strawberries and cream.

The taste is loaded with sweet strawberries. The lactose is there but not as prevalent as I expected.

Medium bodied

This is a nice fruit/dessert beer. I expected a sweet mess. It is not too sweet, and the strawberry taste is better than most strawberry beers that I have tried.

Had on tap. Pours clear, gold in color with minimal head. Taste is strawberry and cake batter. Light bodied, sweet, with moderate carbonation. Enjoyable strawberry beer in true Shorts style. Good if you like fruit beer.

Brown body, semi-opaque, pink-red highlights. White head, sticky lacing. Nose is lactic and yogurt, flavor introduces a sour fruit aspect over a biscuit malt core. Tasty, an interesting experiment.

Pours reddish brown. Foamy, medium, off white head that fades shortly.

Smells strawberries, cream, bready malt, sugar and light earthy.

Tastes strawberries, lactose sugar, bready malt and touch earthiness. Semi dry finish with strawberry linger. Medium body and creamy medium carbonation.

Hard time believing this is a shorts beer. Flavors don't meld at all. Awkwardly sweet. Pass.
