When it was announced that Short's Brewing was going to be getting distro into PA, my heart went pitty-pat! I have known these guys since the early part of the century when they were coming to the BeerAdvocate fests at the Cyclorama. I have embroidered cloth patches from them & sport them proudly on my vests & jackets. We did not get everything from them, initially, but as time has passed, so has the depth and breadth of what they are sending us increased. Accordingly, I am trying to keep up with their releases.

From the bottle: "Golden Ale brewed with fresh strawberries and milk sugar".

This has to be among my all-time favorite beers from Short's! This and Soft Parade, both fruit beers, which may seem odd, coming from this self-avowed, self-described hophead. Strawberries & I go back to my wee childhood, when I was one of the only freckle-faced children in my Nursery class & I was a bit of a curiosity. As it turned out, the other freckled classmate was a flame-haired cutie who became my first girlfriend. We became inseparable and held hands and walked side-by-side, while our classmates had to line up. There was some initial concern, but soon the entire school was abuzz about "The Little Couple". I was heartbroken when she moved away after our first grade year. How does this relate to strawberries? Back then, Funny Face drink mix ( )
was the rage & I had a book about the characters, including Freckle-Faced Strawberry, who became our hero! To this day, I have an unabashed fetish for redheads and have written an (as-yet) unpublished children's book about a strawberry.

Onward! It is time to Pop! the cap on this Cake & have some Strawberry. I let fly in my excitement and produced two fingers of foamy, fizzy, tawny head with limited retention. Color was a slightly-hazy Coppery-Brown (SRM = > 17, < 22), but with a slightly reddish tint. Nose was redolent with strawberries, so fair dinkum for truth in advertising! Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but nothing notable. I liked the way the taste was not wildly sweet, but still allowed for the strawberry taste to be in the forefront. The milk sugar gave it a creamy, vanilla-like sweetness and by closing my eyes, I could taste my late-paternal grandmother's signature strawberry shortcake. Oh my! No wonder I have always enjoyed this beer in the past. Finish was sweet, but not cloying or over the top. Instead, it left me longing for summer and the return of fresh strawberries. Would I drink it again? Unquestionably, without hesitation!

Appearance of strawberry puree and golden ale mixed together. 1/2 finger of slick head.

Well, this smells like a PB&J sandwich (strawberry jam of course). Spot on. I know that's not what they were going for, but impressive nonetheless.

Flavors of strawberry jam, white bread, golden malts, and a slight dirt quality. (whatever you do, don't drink this from the bottle)

Feel is light to medium bodied, crisp, with mild carbonation.

Overall, I think if this were rebranded a PB&J Ale, it would do wonderfully. I didn't taste shortcake or any sort of dessert. I got total PB&J made with strawberry jam dropped on the playground.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has an amber/copper color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of strawberries, cream. Taste is damn good! Strawberry jelly, cream, light malts, a touch of sweetness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a tasty and unique beer worth trying.

The nose is of sweet strawberries and sugar and the taste follows. You can definitely pick up on the strawberry shortcake flavor. Other than that though, this beer is basic AF which is what I've come to expect from Short's with no complexity and leaves much to be desired. I suppose it's worth a try if you can buy a single and are a Short's fan, but not work getting a sixer.

12 ounce bottle, stamp on bottle says 06/22/16 so I assume that's the bottled on date. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours a hazy amber/reddish color with about a half inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like strawberries, strawberry shortcake, lactose and some bready/grainy malt. For the most part I think the taste is just like the aroma, but with some strawberry jam noticeable too. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's smooth and easy enough to drink. I'm glad I got to try this one, $2.79 a bottle.

Pours a little deeper in color than most golden ales, this one is nearly a shade of auburn or amber in color. It smells absolutely delicious. I've never imagined a beer to smell the way this one does. Buttered biscuits are the first thing I notice about it's aroma, and quickly become obsessed with smelling it. Not at all buttery like diacetyl, yet buttery like your grandmother is baking something in the kitchen and that smell is teasing you for most of the day. Strawberry hints rise from the glass as well. This beer smells like none other. It smells like delicious food.

It's flavor is nearly as good as it's aroma. It actually tastes like strawberry short cake. Now, strawberry short cake is not anywhere even close to my top 10 favorite desserts. However, somehow it goes so blissfully perfect in this beer, and the simple fact they were able to nail this creative idea so well is worth bonus points.

You have to try it!

Ow man OW MAN! Been meaning to try this beer every since I heard of the brewery and its experimental awesomeness.

A - Not much head which pulls back to a pathetic lace ring. Color is not at all what I expected for a blonde ale very dark ruby brown.
S - AH! There it is! Fresh jammed strawberry puree mixed with lactic sugars to give it a sort of vanilla cookie like smell.
T - Aside from a touch of dry yeast or hops it tastes like it advertises very sweet then tart strawberries mixed with some vanilla sweet lactose. Repeated sips are the same in that order of tastes so complex!
M - Very smooth light to medium body I am enjoying it!

Overall I can really get into this beer its sweet and sour and then hop bite/yeast keeps it interesting and each sip is consistent. Really don't get the bad reviews since its everything it says it is right on the label and it tastes GOOD!

12 oz. bottle, bottled 06/22/16 printed on the bottleneck. First time seeing this offering from Short's in the Chicagoland area. "Golden Ale brewed with fresh strawberries and milk sugar". No abv listed on the bottle.

Poured into a Central Waters snifter.

A - Pours a murky pinkish-brown colored body, conjures about half a finger of thin frothy off-white head that leaves some okay fluffy lacing. Appears aptly carbonated. Looks nice.

S - Aroma definitely embodies the spirit of freshly cut strawberries - super juicy & authentic smelling, with lots of nice creamy milk sugars coming in second.

T - The taste strikes me as very nutty & earthy initially (peanuts & hazelnuts mostly) but its probably just the combination of fresh cut strawberry goodness and the milk sugars. Definitely invokes true flavors of strawberry short cake when you look for them. The strawberry flavor comes through very fresh, juicy, & authentic.

M - Feel is extremely smooth, crisp, & creamy. The juicy strawberry & milk sugar is a wonderful pair. Light-bodied and easy drinking stuff with excellent carb.

Overall, an awesome, unique, and delicious beer from Short's. Would definitely try this again.

12 ounce bottle into a tulip glass.

Pours a hazy, fairly deep orange, with a one finger head. some lacing. Geez. it really does smell like strawberry shortcake- strawberries, cream/lactose, yeast, light malt. The taste... is kind of a drop off from the aroma. Fruity flavor- still some strawberry, yeasty, more of a malt presence, good amount of lactose. A little earthy bitterness on the finish. Smooth, light bodied.

The aroma is great. especially on the first pour, decent flavor, fun to try.

Bottled on 6/22/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy and cloudy copper with a fluffy light tan head that fades leaving nice retention and solid lacing. The aromas are full of sweet strawberries and vanilla. It does have a "cake like" vibe going on. Malts are there. The flavors are sweet, but not cloying at all. It's slightly earthy. Lots of fresh strawberries. Very subtle bitterness in the finish. Alcohol goes completely unnoticed. Mouthfeel is light and thin, but still has a solid body to it with moderate carbonation. Very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a nice brew. It's pretty unique as well. It definitely has a strawberry short cake vibe. Very refreshing stuff. Well done, I like it.

Pours a ruby Amber color. Aroma is a little malty and cakey with some strawberry sweetness. Flavor is pretty bland and average. You can taste the strawberry shortcake but nothing special. Overall very average, worth trying once but I don't need to drink this again.

Poured into a tall pils glass. It is a lighter amber color with a dirty 2 finger head. Aroma is very nice with fruity, jammy notes of strawberry and caramel notes. Flavor is similar with a nice sweetness of strawberry jam and cake. I don't it overly sweet, but quite pleasant. Medium feel that is buttery with some softer carbonation. Just an easy drinking enjoyable beer that works well after a meal.

Poured into a mug, not much of a head, if any. Nice maple syrup color to it.

Smells sweet like strawberry, with a creamy or even cake softness.

Tastes like a strawberry cheesecake blended to drink. Quite tastey, though not very beer like.

Smooth, and pretty good if you liek sweet things.

Not much of a sweets person, or veggie beer person but this is nice. Whim purchase that worked out.

This is a true dessert beer....almost to the point where I would expect this would work well to actually cook with...put in a mousse or ice cream. It is a very unique drinking experience. The milk sugar element is very evident, with a biscuity, cookie piece that comes out clearly. Sticky and sweet, with a slightly artificial aftertaste. I write this as I drink, so not sure how I will finish this off. More fruit layers come out as this warms and brings a little bit of a buttery piece too.

once again, big thanks to the bandit1 for that stupidly insane LIF box that included this. enjoyed from a wine glass from a local pub.

a - pours magenta w cream colored head that didn't hang.

s - nose is strawberry cheesecake. so inviting that I may murder someone to get to it.

t/m/o - definitely like falling off a cliff of letdown in the flavor. overly earthy malt. dirt. strawberry. makes me feel like I am picking strawberry in the hot sun in some tattered clothes and as a truck zooms by brushing up a small storm of dirt I choose a underdeveloped strawberry from my pickings and pop it in my mouth. nor and look steal the show. far from a drain pour but a bit of a let down based on the look and smell.

This one did nothing for me. And I'm a sucker for fruit flavored beer. There was plenty of strawberry in there, but whatever they used to aim for the "shortcake" piece did not work for me. There was simply any unpleasant aftertaste that turned me off. Shorts usually hits the mark, but not on this one

A: Pours a beautiful ruby/amber with a creamy and billowing off-white two finger head. A thin white collar lingers with a few fingers of lacing after the head drops.
S: Huge liquefied strawberry jam, lots of sweetness, hints of caramel.
T: Bright jammy fruits, strawberry puree, ripe, sweet skins; undertones of caramel and lots of lingering sweetness and cream.
M: Creamy and luscious, the beer really washes over the palate with a pleasant crispness of carbonation but velvety lactose texture.
O: This beer couldn't be named any more accurately, it's literally strawberries and cream. Maybe not something I would drink multiples of back-to-back but damn it if I am not enjoying the single.

I love this brew. Every year when it comes out I look forward to it. This year's batch has a strong strawberry flavor which I am really enjoying. The biscuity flavor of the malts really gives it the taste of the dessert. So happy I was able to find some.

Pours a rosy orange with a soda like inch thick frothy carbonation. Smell of fruity esters, light malt, caramel, freeze dried strawberry ice cream, and a bit of banana. Taste is light with lots of watery fresh strawberry flavor, sweet cream, and a light sweet malt flavor. It had a little bit of a floral taste, light body, and a light mouth feel.

Just picked this beer up. I was surprised by the color - it was a darker orange/red - I was expecting something lighter. Quite a bit of carbonation. The smell was odd to say the least. I got no strawberry at all in the aroma. Had my daughter smell it and she said it smelled like olives. The taste - not good at all. Again, I'm not getting any strawberry or anything like that at all. Hate to say it - just poured half of my pint down the drain. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with this beer - I don't know how it cold be skunked though because it was just bottled - the bottles just got released today in MI. Not a fan of this beer and looking to unload the other 5 bottles I got.

Bottle received as an extra.

Pours a jammy looking red, not very dark, or very light, right in the middle. There's a half inch head, with a small amount of lacing.

Smells quite like fresh strawberries, they translated the flavor pretty well. I am also picking up some vanilla.

The taste is similar. The wonderful fresh strawberry flavor, like sweet jam, is the overwhelming flavor, but I am getting some vanilla flavor that brings whipped cream to mind. I am not getting a whole lot "cake" flavor, however. This is really one-note, but luckily, I like that note.

This one is fairly light bodied, with a sweet, slightly sticky mouthfeel, and a lower level of carbonation. I'm glad the carbonation is lower, or this might have approached fruit soda territory.

A very interesting and tasty beer from Short's, a great fruit beer.

A - Pours a dark red with a one-finger foamy white head. The head dissapates quickly leaving no lacing. Lots of floaties.

S - Aromas of strawberry and toasted malts.

T - Just like the aroma. Lots of strawberry right upfront. The strawberry is followed by the toasted malts. There is a faint lactose sweetness throughout. Finish is more strawberry.

M - Light bodied with light carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

O - This was better than I expected. Not something I would seek out, but definetly an interesting beer.

Just got back from a mini Michigan vacation and was able to trade for a nice size sampler of Shorts bottles.

Strawberry Cake was better than expected. The fruitiness isn't overwhelming, but one bottle is definitely enough. It's perfect for sharing as an after-dinner treat; obviously it pairs well with pie or cake.

Overall a very unique beer and I'm looking forward to trying their other offerings.

doesn't look like a short cake. kind of hazy orange/red. hmmm. head is dismal as well. smells sweet and grainy. a sort of artificial sweetness. not finding this too shortcake-y quite yet. until I sip it! yeah that is a whole lot of strawberry. some vanilla in the finish and a little bit of body make this cake-like as well. very interesting. while this is artificial tasting and gimic-y, it certainly comes off with many strawberry shortcake characteristics. this is my first review from short's and from what I understand is this is their bag, so in that case, well done!

2014, just picked up two six packs from Hardings in Kalamazoo.

Appears dark rose and copper colored with an off-white head. Slight lacing on the glass.

Aroma of strawberries and malts.

Taste is very confusing. It starts with fresh strawberry but immediately I pick up a harsh malty note. The finish is very pleasant with a graham cracker and shortcake flavor. If you wait for it, the taste of shortcake really does appear.

Mouthfeel is enjoyable with good carbonation and its pretty smooth.

Overall a decent and interesting beer
