Strawberry Short's CakeStrawberry Short's Cake
Notes: Strawberry Short’s Cake is a Golden Ale brewed with the addition of strawberries and milk sugar. The flavors of shortcake and fresh strawberries transform this beer into rose-colored party nectar that is pleasingly sweet with hints of cream. Biscuit flavors and aromas arise from the use of large amounts of Victory malt.

once again, big thanks to the bandit1 for that stupidly insane LIF box that included this. enjoyed from a wine glass from a local pub.

a - pours magenta w cream colored head that didn't hang.

s - nose is strawberry cheesecake. so inviting that I may murder someone to get to it.

t/m/o - definitely like falling off a cliff of letdown in the flavor. overly earthy malt. dirt. strawberry. makes me feel like I am picking strawberry in the hot sun in some tattered clothes and as a truck zooms by brushing up a small storm of dirt I choose a underdeveloped strawberry from my pickings and pop it in my mouth. nor and look steal the show. far from a drain pour but a bit of a let down based on the look and smell.

This one did nothing for me. And I'm a sucker for fruit flavored beer. There was plenty of strawberry in there, but whatever they used to aim for the "shortcake" piece did not work for me. There was simply any unpleasant aftertaste that turned me off. Shorts usually hits the mark, but not on this one

A: Pours a beautiful ruby/amber with a creamy and billowing off-white two finger head. A thin white collar lingers with a few fingers of lacing after the head drops.
S: Huge liquefied strawberry jam, lots of sweetness, hints of caramel.
T: Bright jammy fruits, strawberry puree, ripe, sweet skins; undertones of caramel and lots of lingering sweetness and cream.
M: Creamy and luscious, the beer really washes over the palate with a pleasant crispness of carbonation but velvety lactose texture.
O: This beer couldn't be named any more accurately, it's literally strawberries and cream. Maybe not something I would drink multiples of back-to-back but damn it if I am not enjoying the single.

I love this brew. Every year when it comes out I look forward to it. This year's batch has a strong strawberry flavor which I am really enjoying. The biscuity flavor of the malts really gives it the taste of the dessert. So happy I was able to find some.

Pours a rosy orange with a soda like inch thick frothy carbonation. Smell of fruity esters, light malt, caramel, freeze dried strawberry ice cream, and a bit of banana. Taste is light with lots of watery fresh strawberry flavor, sweet cream, and a light sweet malt flavor. It had a little bit of a floral taste, light body, and a light mouth feel.

Just picked this beer up. I was surprised by the color - it was a darker orange/red - I was expecting something lighter. Quite a bit of carbonation. The smell was odd to say the least. I got no strawberry at all in the aroma. Had my daughter smell it and she said it smelled like olives. The taste - not good at all. Again, I'm not getting any strawberry or anything like that at all. Hate to say it - just poured half of my pint down the drain. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with this beer - I don't know how it cold be skunked though because it was just bottled - the bottles just got released today in MI. Not a fan of this beer and looking to unload the other 5 bottles I got.

Bottle received as an extra.

Pours a jammy looking red, not very dark, or very light, right in the middle. There's a half inch head, with a small amount of lacing.

Smells quite like fresh strawberries, they translated the flavor pretty well. I am also picking up some vanilla.

The taste is similar. The wonderful fresh strawberry flavor, like sweet jam, is the overwhelming flavor, but I am getting some vanilla flavor that brings whipped cream to mind. I am not getting a whole lot "cake" flavor, however. This is really one-note, but luckily, I like that note.

This one is fairly light bodied, with a sweet, slightly sticky mouthfeel, and a lower level of carbonation. I'm glad the carbonation is lower, or this might have approached fruit soda territory.

A very interesting and tasty beer from Short's, a great fruit beer.

A - Pours a dark red with a one-finger foamy white head. The head dissapates quickly leaving no lacing. Lots of floaties.

S - Aromas of strawberry and toasted malts.

T - Just like the aroma. Lots of strawberry right upfront. The strawberry is followed by the toasted malts. There is a faint lactose sweetness throughout. Finish is more strawberry.

M - Light bodied with light carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel.

O - This was better than I expected. Not something I would seek out, but definetly an interesting beer.

Just got back from a mini Michigan vacation and was able to trade for a nice size sampler of Shorts bottles.

Strawberry Cake was better than expected. The fruitiness isn't overwhelming, but one bottle is definitely enough. It's perfect for sharing as an after-dinner treat; obviously it pairs well with pie or cake.

Overall a very unique beer and I'm looking forward to trying their other offerings.

doesn't look like a short cake. kind of hazy orange/red. hmmm. head is dismal as well. smells sweet and grainy. a sort of artificial sweetness. not finding this too shortcake-y quite yet. until I sip it! yeah that is a whole lot of strawberry. some vanilla in the finish and a little bit of body make this cake-like as well. very interesting. while this is artificial tasting and gimic-y, it certainly comes off with many strawberry shortcake characteristics. this is my first review from short's and from what I understand is this is their bag, so in that case, well done!

2014, just picked up two six packs from Hardings in Kalamazoo.

Appears dark rose and copper colored with an off-white head. Slight lacing on the glass.

Aroma of strawberries and malts.

Taste is very confusing. It starts with fresh strawberry but immediately I pick up a harsh malty note. The finish is very pleasant with a graham cracker and shortcake flavor. If you wait for it, the taste of shortcake really does appear.

Mouthfeel is enjoyable with good carbonation and its pretty smooth.

Overall a decent and interesting beer

Poured from bottle into tulip. Bottled dated 7/14, it's now 4/15. This is the longest I've held onto one, usually drink them fresher (within a month of bottle date). Seems to make a difference, most of the fresher ones have a tartness to them, this one is sweet with very little tart. Not a bad thing at all, either way, but something I'm going to pay attention to later this year.
Pours a pinkish red, or reddish pink, with some fizzy head that dissipates quickly to nothing no lacing. Some floaties, always floaties in Short's cake. I let them settle, then swirl as I drink.
Smell is of strawberry jam. Pleasant, summery. Sweet, sugary, some graham cracker.
Taste is sweet berries, nothing artificial about it. Some bite on the back end for this session, usually it's a little more tart upfront, too.
One of my favorite fruit beers, always a must buy for me every summer, along with Key Lime pie.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a shaker pint glass. Bottled 07/28/14

A- Deep amber, good clarity, small head that quickly dissipated, some floaties.

S- Medium strawberry, some toasted malt, light floral notes.

T- Sort of watery strawberry, doesn't taste artificial though which is good, toasted malt that doesn't really grab me as "cake"-like. Finish is slightly sweet and strawberry, maybe some light floral notes but not too much more in the way of hops.

M- Full and silky yet also thin.

O- Your opinion of this beer will probably come down to how you like fruit beers in general. I prefer them like Founders Rubeaus or how New Glarus does them with big fruit forward and right on the edge of being too sweet. I found this to be a bit lacking in flavor and kind of just a watered down version of their Soft Parade.

Thanks to sarro for the bottle. Tasted 14 November 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours a clean amber, mostly but not totally clear (can't quite see through it). Half-finger of whitish head, okay retention and lacing.

Smells like strawberry shortcake! Sweet and sugary and strawberry. Like sponge cake and strawberries in a crazy beery combination. Always impressive when people can make beers smell or taste like weird non-beer things.

Taste doesn't have as much going on as the smell; more toasty bready malts than cake or berries. Gets more interesting as I progress through it.

Medium-bodied. Juicy and expansive, but a little flat.

A nice strawberry beer (not that I've had all that many). Pretty tasty, definitely fruity and interestingly sweet. Unique, with that sweet cake and strawberry.

Dessert in a glass. A beer I've never reviewed before and now have the chance thanks to mtomlins.

Pours a beautiful copper colour with a respectable head that has good retention. Aroma of pure strawberry syrup, with a malted barley crust. If smelled with eyes closed, could be surprised that there was no strawberry shortcake present. The flavour likewise has the best of the dessert elements, albeit in liquid form.

Not a beer in any traditional sense, but delivers very well on the promise of the name.

Sampled from a 12oz bottle. Thanks surge1311.

Light copper with great clarity and a small beige head. Fine bubbles continually arise. Aroma is strong strawberry like candy or a strawberry milk. Taste follows closely with loads of artificial strawberry flavor and a firm sweetness. The flavors linger for some time. Too long in fact. Consistency is a bit thin with a low carbonation.

Not much beer to this beer. It seems better suited to someone that hates beer but wants to say they had one.

12 oz bottle from a 6 pack purchased in Ann Arbor as it came in off the delivery truck. Served in a snifter. Pours red-amber with very good clarity and small, shot-lived head.

An interesting fruit beer, with a bitter/sweet/tart taste tha leans a bit toward the sweet side, but leaving all 3 components apparent.
The strawberry smell and taste more like preserves than fresh berries and, while obvious, are nearly matched by the flavor of light malts. Aroma is too vegetative.

O: A fun and refreshing beer that's certainly worth trying.

Short’s Strawberry Shorts Cake pours an amber-caramel color, like a malty ruby-tinged syrup. There’s an enormous up-front aroma of strawberry jam with a hint of vanilla ice cream on top. The flavor has a sweet, rich, jammy cream flavor and a slightly bitter edge. It’s tangy and sweet and definitely lives up to its name. Although a full pour or bottle might be too much this would make a great dessert beer in small amounts.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a stemmed tulip glass.

A: A deep caramel brown, clear and no real head; thin bubbly collar; no lacing.

S: Wow, a big hit of strawberries and biscuits; no hops (thankfully); sweet nose and no acid to speak of.

T: Sweet bread/biscuits and ripe strawberries, wow! There is an underlying tartness that dries the taste out, balancing the sweetness. The dryness prolongs the finish though and the beer finishes with a strange dry or bitter aftertaste. The flavor starts amazing but the finish is off.

M: Medium body and carbonation; smooth and round.

O: A very interesting beer and a great take on a summer seasonal. It is an incredible take on Strawberry shortcake in a bottle that starts out fantastic, but ends a bit off. I give the brewery a lot of credit for trying something way out of the box and coming very close to matching the flavor profile of the dessert.

Consumed 8/30/13

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this

Appearance: Deep orange, with a distinct pink/red tint - very small head, fades to a borderline nonexistent cap, leaves a few specs of lacing

Smell: Strawberries, strawberries everywhere - fresh, ripe, sliced strawberries - some milky sweetness and powdered sugar - very pale malts, undercooked dough, wouldn't really describe this as shortcake-like (I can accept this)

Taste: Lots of strawberries - not as fresh and juicy as the nose, but definitely fleshy and whole - lactose, with lots of milky sugar - buttery, pale malts - more like raw dough than shortbread, like the smell - finishes sugary, but that makes sense for the intent of this beer

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body, low carbonation, smooth, nice to sip (even though I wouldn't consider this a sipper due to the low ABV)

Overall: I like cake

The strawberry and sweet components of this are quite exceptional. But the cake is a bit underdeveloped. It could be more decadent and full of cake. Worth a try though. I think I need to eat some cake.

Thanks to Jas45678 for the bottle. Split with angrybabboon.

Appearance: Red tinged orange copper. Slightly hazed. Tiny white collar, no cap or lacing. Minimal carbonation on the pour.

Smell: Fresh strawberries. Light lactose sweetness over a bready graham cracker malt base. A very light hint of pale malt sweetness as well. Juicy with some strawberry jam. A hint of butter and shortbread. A very slight dairy backing. Not a ton of complexity, but solid on the name.

Taste: A little less fruit forward than the nose, but still pushes a fresh strawberry flesh. Some bitter underripe strawberry as well. Malts are light and slightly bready with some slight buttery notes. Lightly sweet thanks to the lactose and surprisingly clean. Slightly sweet strawberry.
Not particularly complex or anything, but nice.

Mouth feel: Light moving toward medium body. Moderate carbonation. Clean and easy drinking.

Overall: Oh snap, it's dessert.

Not crazy, but might be the best dessert-like Short's beer I've tried. Clean and straight up use of strawberry make it delightful. Not complex, but solid.

Another experimental Shorts brew, another anxious me, waiting patiently all year to finally indulge. Red, not quite dark enough to be called ruby or crimson, rather it's just an ominous red color, with even a little bit of orange at the edges. Mild clarity with only a slight haze, a soapy film rests on top without growing large enough to qualify as a true head.

Pure strawberry juiciness comes gushing out of the glass as I bring my nose forth. Sweetness is present, almost like some residual sugars, but nothing that's going to rot your teeth out. Hefty malts lay down a bready aroma that undercuts the strawberry near the end. There's a mild creaminess here and there, also kind of sugary in character. A fruity explosion, no doubt. It actually smells slightly reminiscent of the beer's namesake.

The taste is a little more mild in terms of downright fruity sweetness than the aroma, and that may actually turn out to be a good thing. More strawberry puree and a good amount of backing creaminess with a touch of sugary, milky sweetness to travel alongside. Yeah, it's sweet. Of course it's sweet - it's called "Strawberry Shorts Cake" for Christ's sake. What did you expect? But, it's not overwhelming. It's sweet in a light, dessert-y kind of way.

The malt provides the breadiness that controls the entire "cake" aspect. It's certainly bready and doughy, and mixed with the mild residual sugars, I guess I can see where you'd pull "cake" from. It is pretty biscuity. Some light whipped cream and granulated sugar mixed with tingly strawberry juice in the finish. Lighter bodied, as you'd expect from a 5% ABV fruit beer, with decent carbonation and a mouth feel that's not as sticky as you might think.

Well, well, well... I was a bit nervous going into this one (albeit still excited) but things turned out well after all. This beer is basically exactly what it states. Strawberries, biscuit and bread malt, and some creamy sweetness. Strawberry short cake, right? It's sweet, it's dessert-like, and it's a nice way to compliment a hefty dinner. I enjoyed this one quite a bit, and it's one of the better Michigan fruit beers out there, if you ask me.

Appearance: a light brown with a reddish hue. Pretty clear. Small tan head that quickly fades.

Smell: sweet. Strawberry sweetness. Milk sugar sweetness and a bready scent

Taste: interesting how much it is actually like strawberry short cake. Opens up with sweet strawberries that give way to a bread taste and finishes off with sugar. My complaint is that the flavors are very artificial. The strong sweetness is overkill and adds to the artificitialty.

Mouthfeel: fairly heavy and full for the low alcohol. Finishes way to sweet.

Overall: this one is a dud in the shorts lineup. They usually do so well with this type of beer. But the sweetness is off putting and the taste is too artificial

$2 bottle purchased at Fairway Sav-Mor... I'm glad I managed a couple bottles of this, as I wanted it last year but was too late. Bottled 15 days ago on July 26th.

Appearance: A red-amber color with a slight haze. A super fizzy two-finger head bubbles away quickly. Very little lacing's left on the glass.

Smell: Initially I was getting a mostly roasted malt quality that kind of confused me a bit, with strawberries in the back. After a few more whiffs, the strawberries definitely took over, though the malt is still there. Definitely smells like strawberry shortcake.

Taste/feel: An excellent sweet, tart strawberry flavor hits the front, and then the "cake" part of the beer comes through in the finish. It's really not all that complex -- it is essentially what it says it is... a strawberry shortcake beer. Super thirst quenching, which I don't say for too many beers, and very refreshing. Not overly sweet at all. The aftertaste also has a bit of that cream flavor thanks to the lactose that's infused in this beer, just adding more to the illusion that you're having yourself some shortcake.

This is just about what I was expecting. My initial smell and taste wasn't awesome, but it grew on me a little bit. It's a shame Short's doesn't make more of this stuff, because it's really a unique, tasty beer.

12 ounce bottle poured into Barley Creek wine style glass.

A: A surprisingly good looking beer. The first time I opened one of these, I was expecting something more similar to Shorts Key Lime Pie which is full of little floaties. This one pours clear, is red hued, and yields a nice 1.5 finger white head. Looks nice in the glass.

S: Tons of ripe strawberries on the nose. I'm highly impressed how much strawberry scent is packed into this one, and there is nothing artificial about the scent, which isn't always the case with fruit beers.

T: Strawberry is the star flavor on the palate, although it isn't as one dimensional as the nose suggests. Some milk sweetness is there: I must commend Shorts for the really nice job they do with the lactose on this one. Some lactose infused beers are heavy handed in such a way that I can't get past the dairy presence. In this case, lactose is complimentary. Also picking up a bit of caramel and biscuity malt presence, which carries through the "short cake" concept.

M: Thin to medium body with moderate carbonation. Once again, I'm impressed by the use of lactose here, as some lactose beers case come across as a bit gritty on my palate. Not the case with this one.

O: This is a release I look forward to each year. This beer is just what it claims to be, a strawberry packed fruit/concept beer. They do a great job of packaging strawberry short cake in beer form, and I enjoy this beer both as a concept and as a drinking experience.
