12 ounce bottle, dated 12/17/14

The bottle pours with a deep amber hue and a quickly dissipating, one finger white head.

The aroma is a huge hit of citrus, namely grapefruit and orange. I also pick up some sweet, resinous pine. Awesome, balanced bouquet.

The taste generally follows the nose with the resinous pine taking the lead slightly to begin with, and the grapefruit jumping in quickly. The finish favors the pine. Sweet malts linger in the background throughout, letting the hops shine.

Mouthfeel is, as previously mentioned, resinous and sticky. Bitterness is definitely on the higher end, but it works well with the grapefruit and pine flavors. Carbonation is medium.

Overall, The Liberator is easily one of the best beers that I have had from Short's! I tend to notice the malt too often in double IPAs, but this beer is just such an awesome display of hops, showcasing the grapefruit, orange and pine flavors that they provide.

Shared by bring; thanks. Cloudy orange in the glass with a small white head. Big citrusy hop nose, orange and grapefruit. Very little perceptible sweetness. The taste lives up to the nose with a big juicy citrus hop flavor. Crisp and dry with a huge bitter kick, this finishes borderline astringent, but it's still enjoyable.

Picked up a few bottles from Holiday Market. Consumed on 12.27.2009.

A: Fairly-hazy peach and mango-colored with a nice bone-white head. A little bit of lacing as it comes down.

S: Strong bittering hops are the initial aroma, along with clear indications of the lemon and orange zest that are touted on the bottle. Lots of citrus, but balanced out by a strong bitterness. The aroma also includes some tropical fruits, namely mango.

T: Nice malty sweetness comes in behind a fairly-overpowering bitterness. Lemon, orange, and mango abound. Perhaps a hint of peach. A little bit of earthy pepper-ness comes through; slightly spicy.

M: Somewhat creamy with a medium body. A little bit of alcohol seems to make its way in with some spice, but nothing that takes away from the character of the beer.

D: Short's is brewed by people who care...and definitely who know what they're doing, especially when it comes to IPA's. I was most looking forward to Cup A Joe when Short's announced that it was bottling, but it was really this one that stole the show for me. An excellent offering and one I hope to have quite frequently.

12 oz bottle poured into snifter glass

A- Reddish Orange rusty color, zero visibility, small head with little retention.

S- Bread, pine, and citrus

T- Grapefruit up front with a hint of orange, sweet malts, hints of caramel, and a TON of hops and bitterness.

M- Little carbonation, heavy and chewy, a tad creamy.

O- I absolutely love IPA's and found this a little much on the bitterness. A decent double IPA but not my favorite. It did grow on me the more I sipped it.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle that I'm assuming is pretty fresh because it's from a Michigan local.

A: Golden amber, with a "fuzzy", still head and nice lacing.

S: Wow! The best feature of this beer. Really fresh pLiny smell, citrusy fruits, smell does not fade when you inhale, just what I'm looking for in a DIPA.

T: Light and refreshing at the start, melding into the hop profile in the middle, and finishes with a HopSlam-bam bitterness. Really nice blend of hops used in this if you like them IBU's.

M: Not-so-sticky like other DIPAs I've recently indulged, good carb levels, and feels a little on the thin side if anything.

D: Some may argue with the score here, but to me this beer is easy to take down because there is no alcohol present and is lighter-bodied. Bitterness beware!

Overall, underrated.

3rd tasting of the evening. Pours clear golden amber, fluffy, bubbly head. Fruity, piney scent and taste follows. Goes smooth, with a tiny bite. I shall now liberate the rest of this brew from the glass.

From a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.

Color is hazy orange with lots of carbonation and 1 finger of heavy foam.

Big aroma of citrus peel sociocultural grapefruit and orange.

Taste follows the nose exactly with big hop flavor on top if the grapefruit.

I've had several from shorts now. I continue to be impressed!

Thanks again to beerindex for sending multiple Short's offerings my way.

The "crafted on" date for this bottle was sometime in December '10. Poured into a basic pint glass.

A - Pours a nice looking copper, dark-orange color with a thick 1.5 finger white head. Moderate head retention and lacing.

S - Very tropical and citrusy. Orange, grapefruit, pineapple. Piney, grassy hops. Slight caramel-y malt sweetness also pokes through.

T - Tongue-numbingly bitter, as expected. Lots and lots of hops. Where's the "lemon and orange zest?" Not much in the way of a malt sweetness to balance the hops. I'm unsure if it's just not there, or it's being overpowered. Not much more than a hop-bomb here.

M - Medium bodied, high carbonation. Fairly smooth.

D - Not very high for me. This one was just overly bitter without much else going for it. I enjoy this level of bitterness in other DIPA's, but this one seemed unbalanced to me.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Perfect Pint glass. A single finger, alabaster white head formed on top of a hazy, orange/amber body. The foam stuck around for a while and left small trails on the glass walls.

Tons of hops on the nose...seem to be a pretty good mixture of citrus and pine. Tiny, grassy/grainy aromas hide in the background.

Hmm...this is pretty much a hop bomb. The bitterness dominates the palate. Pine resin, grapefruit and lemon zest. As the brew warms, some bready characters poke up and try to balance things...

Medium mouth feel, slick yet astringent with moderate carbonation.

Pretty nice beer. I would prefer a little more balance to the bitterness which hurts the drinkability.

Thanks to Another6Pack for this beer!

A 12 oz bottle poured into my goblet.

Appearance: A golden hazy beer sits under a one finger tall off white head. A little lacing is left from the bubbles that now surround the outside edge of the glass.

Smell: As expected a nice citrus tinged bitterness escapes from the glass. Grapefruit and some pine are the hops scents. They pretty well mask the malt backbone smells.

Taste: This beers is very dry and tastes like the smell. Some citrus flavors up front, light malts in the middle, and bitterness down the back end. Not really balanced at all, I do like a slightly sweeter IIPA. If I did not know this was brewed with lemon and orange zest, I am not sure that I would be able to pick them out, maybe if it were more fresh.

Mouthfeel: This beer has a long bitter finish. The carbonation is fine as well as the body.

Overall: I am not sure I love this beer, it is pretty one sided and does not offer anything new that I picked up on. That being said it is well made and a step up from beer available at a grocery store, or most ballparks; and I am glad that I was able to try it. I am not sure I would choose this one again.
