Bottled 6/18/14. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint 6/29/14. $2.49 single. I've been wanting this since I first heard about it a few years ago, despite its underwhelming scores.

Appearance: Aggressive pour gives off a pop-like head that goes away quickly. The beer is a hazy dark amber color. No lacing.

Smell: Mostly unlike key lime pie. Smells more like the graham cracker crust. Lactose-y sort of milk aroma. Maybe a hint of sweetness probably from the limes, but it's not super pungent.

Taste/feel: That's a bit more like I was expecting. Sharp lime acidity at the start with a good lime flavor, but then a heavy biscuity sort of malt character at the end with sweetness to cut the lime a bit. The lime acidity is more prominent than an actual lime flavor. The graham cracker flavor helps give that sweetness and biscuity character on the finish to mellow out that almost lip puckering lime. I don't really get a creamy sort of quality that I associate with key lime pie, which is disappointing, and I'd never guess this beer was brewed with marshmallows. The feel is middle of the road with a moderate body and carbonation. Works pretty well.

Short's should consider an "imperial" version of this beer to see what happens. Make it a thicker, higher ABV beer, and get some more of a creamy quality into the beer. The graham cracker and lime tartness are perfect, but the full lime flavor and creamy sort of flavor isn't there like I'd want it to be.

Overall, it's a beer I'm absolutely glad to have FINALLY found and tried, but as a whole, the beer doesn't completely come together. Regardless of that, it's still a tasty, interesting beer that'll no doubt get people talking if they see you drinking it. By comparison, it's similar to Short's Cake with lime in place of strawberries, but I think I may like this one a liiittle bit more.
