Had this one last year, just getting around to having it again for a fair review. A BA's work is never done, y'know.
This is one of my favorite (if not my favorite) ABA, so take that as read.
Pours from bottle to pilsner glass, a jet black color with some suspended floaties. Produces three fingers of mocha-colored head that settles to one fluffy finger with great retention. Lots of spotty, sticky lacing. The aroma is something else: roasted malts and cocoa powder, with floral hops and a little note of grapefruit coming up from behind. The mouthfeel is exceedingly smooth, with a pleasant creamy texture, and full body. The taste is creamy sweet roasted coffee malts, cocoa, citrus, floral hops with some pine underneath and on the finish. Has a great balance of roasted sweet and floral bitter bite.

12 fl. oz bottle
Served in a becker glass

It basically pours black. Just the faintest of ruby light comes through when held to a light. It is topped with a couple inches of tan head the sticks around for a while leaving rings of lacing with each quaff.

As I removed the cap I could smell grapefruit. The grapefruit masks over the roasted flavors. Hints of the roasted malt are intermittent with pungent wafts of grapefruit.

The taste commences with fleeting roasted malt. It is quickly overwhelmed with moderately bitter grapefruit leaving an aftertaste of not quite burnt popcorn and grapefruit.

Medium to full mouthfeel

This is one of the better black IPA's that I have had. It tastes me back to my first experience with the style, Bashah. It comes across to me as having a lot of grapefruit, but it works well with the dark, roasted malt attributes. I am not a huge fan of this style, but this one works for my palate.

holy hops batman, this beer is bitter & astringent & did I say Hop-y? I did.
the boon of this brew is the look. dark sexy bubbly cola colored, with light wispy head that stays thin for awhile after.
this beer is bitter, it's one that I'll remember that's for sure. some roasted flavor up front to prepare you for the hop onslaught.
it may not be the bitterest of beers, but I can't remember a time when I had one. at least recently.
