12oz bottled 10/19/18 (7 weeks ago) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp, 7.8% ABV 99 IBU per website. The beer pours mostly bright golden orange in color with sticky off white head. The head recedes to a splotchy cap and leaves a wall of lacing. The aroma is grapefruit and grapefruit peel. The taste is mostly big dank and bitter throughout. There may be a hint of lemon at first and traces of honey malt before the bitterness takes over. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied, adequately carbonated and dry in the finish. Overall, good. This is pretty one dimensional. If you like to be smacked in the mouth with dank bitterness, here's your beer.

Poured into a Thirsty Monk snifter. Bottleneck says 08/26/16.

A- Pours a semi-hazy medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a large center patch of bubbly surface foam.

S- Earthy, piney hop nose with a bit of a booze fume.

T- Assertive bitterness right off the bat with resinous piney qualities in the hop flavor. There's also a decent amount of complementary malt sweetness. Also notes of grapefruit peel.

M- Very sharp from the hops with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- This is one aggressive IPA. Overall, pretty good but it's taking me a bit to finish the six-pack.

12 fl. oz bottle
Served in an oversized stemless wine glass

This beer is a hazy amber color with golden highlights. It is topped with an inch of off white head that leaves little lacing.

It has a dank, earthy aroma with some cat piss.

The taste is dank, earthy, metallic and bitter. The bitterness overwhelms my palate after half a glass.

Medium mouthfeel

I had heard good things about this beer and was excited to purchase it. The taste and smell just does not agree with my palate. I like juicy IPAs rather than the traditional west coast bitter ones. It kind of reminds me of Ruination by how the bitterness is destroying my palate.

Dirty gold color with a mild chill haze. Modest head that ends up being a fine layer of bubbles. Leaves spots for lace.

I smell mostly malt in the form of buttered cream corn. No hop.

Relatively mild start with a weak pale malt. The swallow draws out a very strong peppery hop bite. This IS the aftertaste. Very dry. Good body with an elevated carbonation level. Leans to the harsh side.

12 oz bottle - 4/20/15 etched onto the neck of the bottle.

Pours light amber, Off white mini head, leaves a tiny bubble film, thin collar and a bit of fine slippery sheeting. Final pour is quite clouded with nutty sediment tastiness.

Pine hop nose, with some tropical fruits make their presence known.

Dry and well hopped brew, lots of pine, grapefruit, pineapple and loads of hoppy goodness. Delicious IPA, biscuity malts add to the complexity and overall enjoyment of this one. Becoming a big fan of shorts....gonna try to get some more of this one before leaving the state.

Poured from bottle to tulip. Had the pleasure of having this one when it was a part of the variety pack last year, glad to see Short's offering some of them as sixers (Chocolate Wheat, please!)
Nice hazy yellow-orange color with a thick, rocky head, which after some time settles to a swirly cap that leaves rings of sticky lacing. Aroma is sweet and sugary grapefruit, and the taste follows with some pine/resin notes an a bite on the back end.

I give it a higher score than the average of the categories because the delicious taste lingers on. An outstanding IPA that only drawback is that it competes against HumaLupa. Buy this one, drink it and enjoy. I think the moderators here have to adjust their IBU of 159.... This beer is high, but not that high. I'll drink again

Delightfully bitter, but overly so. Another great IPA from the gang at Short's. Tastes clean and fresh without sacrificing the hops bite. Don't see it very often. Grab it while you can.

Bottled 4/20/2015

L- Pours a deep straw yellow, two finger white head, good clarity it does have some fine yeast particles.

S- Pine, citrus, and that Juicy fruit gum aroma from the Simcoe.

T- Similar to aroma but with more pine and some added floral. Hefty lingering bitterness, nice level of sweetness.

M- Medium, good carbonation, typical of the style.

O- One of the better Short's IPAs, I still wish it were a tiny bit less bitter and not as piney. The pine kinda covers up some of the fruitiness of the Simcoe.

Very similar to freedom of 78 also by shorts almost like it's little brother. Although I think freedom of 78 is better this is still a damn tasty ipa especially at 6.4 percent. Another well done ipa by shorts.

A gorgeous clear bright golden orange which upon closer inspection show yeast particles suspended in it with a inch thick white foamy head. Grapefruit, citrus, pineapple, apple, guava, and a slight piney smell, like a bouquet of tropical and citrus fruit. Taste is funky dank pine, a cracker-y bread malt, and a nice moderate mouth feel with a good amount of bitter. The taste washes over your tongue and holds on for a good amount of time after you gulped it down. There are some citrus and tropical fruit notes as well as a general smoothness also.

12oz bottle from fall 12-pack variety box. No bottle dating.

Saffron, slightly hazy elixir poured into SA glass. Nice one finger, rocky head maintains throughout. Thick lacing.

Aroma of hops: grapefruit, mango, pine. Minimal whiff of malt.

Tangy grapefruit, pine resin bitterness, pineapple, mango. Nice!

Medium body, nicely carbonated, twang/tang.

Well done IPA. Would keep this in the fridge if available in CLE.

Bottle shares by Adam. Thanks man.

Hazy yellow body with soft white head. Aromas include lemons, hops, crackers. Bitter hops with lemony, tart citrus and a tangy finish. Pretty good.

Appearance - 3.75/5
Pours a great looking clear bright orange, with about two+ fingers of weirdly uneven white foamy head. Can see an average amount of carbonation rising up the beer, and can see very small particulates throughout the beer.

Smell - 2.75/5
Slightly sweet pine-citrus hops, maybe some light malt flavor.

Taste - 2.75/5
Pine-resin hops, with some slight floral notes as well as a hint of citrus. Fairly bitter. The hops are a little too intense and the taste a little too bitter for my liking.

Mouthfeel - 3/5
Medium body, fairly smooth (though bitter). Slightly syrupy. Carbonation is moderate.

Overall - 3/5
I'm not a big IPA fan, though usually most IPAs are drinkable for me, and I have slight to moderate enjoyment of them. That was not the case for this one. It was a little bit of a chore to finish off this beer and needless to say, I will not be drinking this again.

Review from 6/28/13

A: Bright gold amber color. Very clear. Small head that faded quickly. No carbonation visible.

S: Citrus rind, grapefruit, some pine, general fruitiness.

T: Some grapefruit, light piney bitterness, juicy fruits.

M: Zero carbonation means this beer feels flat and on the watery side.

O: This would have been so much better with carbonation. Has to be Ann off bottle in some way, but I don't know. Pretty solid otherwise.

bottle into tulip

appearance: cloudy golden orange, slight 1 finger head

smell: lots of citrus, grapefruit, fruity tropical notes, guava, sweet malts, some pine, lemon zest, coriander. The smell on this is truly amazing.

taste: Follows the nose, although just a tad more held back. Lot's of fruity citrus/grapefruit notes off the bat, great floral hop taste, it is complimented by just the right amount of dank piney bitterness to create a very well balanced, and more importantly, juicy flavor packed IPA. Not a hop bomb, but enough hops to satisfy hopheads like myself. The bitterness doesn't linger for too long, not completely destroying your palate. The aftertaste is very refreshing.

mouthfeel: medium to high carbonation, thick bodied for a single IPA

overall: I've been enjoying all of Short's releases this year, most have been spot on, this is no exception. To me this tastes a lot like the Stone IPA, same citrus and grapefruit dominant notes with lots of floral hop action and a sweet malt backbone. Wish I could find this again but i'll have to wait until they hopefully release this sometime in the future. This is a damn refreshing IPA that exceeded my already high expectiations.

Big thanks to biernutz for this cool extra. Enjoyed from a dfh ipa glass. beer poured classic IPA yellow orange with foamy head. smell is spot on citric notes for days. Dank. earthy malt backbone is present as well. taste is sticky dank hops. as with most IPA's the nose is the star. flavor is nice just not as amazing as the nose suggests. Fairly earthy too. overall a nice IPA, but doesn't hang with the big boys in my opinion.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 5/20/2013. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big mango, peach, pineapple, grapefruit, lemon zest, floral, light pine, light honey, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of tropical/citrus hops with a moderate malt balance; and good strength. Taste of grapefruit, mango, pineapple, lemon zest, pine resin, floral, light honey, and floral earthiness. Good amount of pine resin bitterness; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pineapple, mango, pine, floral, light honey, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance and complexity of citrus, tropical, and piney hops with a light-moderate malt balance; and minimal cloying bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a crisp and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent IPA. Great complexity of hop flavors with sizable bitterness and moderate malt balance; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle acquired in a trade with michaellcoates (thanks again, man!). Pricetag reads $1.87. "American India Pale Ale." I'm reviewing it as an IPA because the label clearly identifies it as such. 12 fl oz brown glass bottle with fun label art and branded pressure cap (also with fun art) served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery. I can't corroborate the currently listed 6.40% ABV with the bottle I have.

Served cold, straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated. Paired with carne asada.

A: Pours a two finger head of beige colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Good (~5-6 minute) retention. No real lacing as the head recedes. No bubble show. Fairly soft complexion.

Body colour is a cloudy nontransparent yellow-orange. No yeast particles are visible. Translucent. Good vibrance, if a bit understated.

Looks average for the style, but it doesn't seem to be filtered. I find it quite attractive, but I wouldn't call it unique or special. Certainly no overt or obvious flaws.

Sm: Floral hop notes. Citrusy but not in a juicy or particularly evocative way. Peach, timid orange, and grapefruit. Maybe tangerine. Pale malts. Caramalt. Some pine. No oily or nectary hop character. I get little fruity notes aside from those that emerge from the hops. I guess pine is dominant, overall. A fairly clean aroma. Somewhat fresh. The hop choices don't seem ideal, but it does come off balanced based on the aroma.

No yeast character or alcohol is detectable. An average strength aroma. Pretty decent for the style overall.

T: Floral hops and murky light citrusy hops - which are not at all evocative or juicy. Pale malts. A bit of piney hop character. Not getting any nectary or oily hops. It leaves a lot to be desired in the hop department, but there are some interesting choices. It's approaching left-out-overnight orange juice in some respects; I could see this growing awful with age.

Pale malts. Some caramalt. Clean barley. This malty foundation is unobtrusive, but does lend needed body.

No yeast character or alcohol comes through. Balance is okay; build is underwhelming - with little complexity or subtlety. I'm disappointed; I expected far better. Maybe I got an old bottle? I see "06/20" on the neck, but since I received this in trade I figured it was a bottled-on date. So this is rather fresh, and it's all that great to be honest.

Mf: Smooth and wet. Good thickness and body. Good, if slightly overdone carbonation. Good presence on the palate. Lightly soft. Approachable stuff which suits the style well; it's just a shame the flavour profile offers little for the texture to work with.

Dr: I hope this is just a fluke (or maybe an old bottle); I'm quite disappointed and I've enjoyed Short's' beers in the past. I'd like to revisit it fresh on-draught to really verify that it's as mundane as it's coming across now. Drinkable but underwhelming. I was really expecting far better.

Bottle poured into the trusty MID shaker pint.

A- Clean, golden body. Light carbonation. 1-finger, off-white head settles into a thin film. Awesome stick.

S- Oh, those are fresh hops! Lots of grapefruit. Kind of pineapply, tropical fruit for sure. Is this gonna be a hop bomb? Sugary-sweet and doughy background presents itself a little later.

T- Considering the initial aroma, it's nicely balanced off the bat. Toasted bread and a solid citrus punch. Marmalade turns into a grapefruit zest at the finish. A nice slap in the face as you think it's all done. A little aspirin kick. Hopping might get a touch long by the end of the glass.

M- Moderate-full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Light hop tingle. Bone dry finish.

O- This is a winner. A straight forward interpretation of a style for Short's. Ver fresh. While quite hoppy, it stays just within the balance I crave from a Midwest IPA. I would definitely buy this again. Sadly, I think it may be in short supply (no pun intended).

T - Lots of grapefruit followed by piney hops with a strong malt backbone.

Fantastic beer, my first short's brew and goes toe to toe with any basic ipa I've ever had. I'd put it a notch above jai alai. I'd drink this stuff all day if it was in Florida distribution. There is no real malt body to it, just hops for days, hops and pine all over my palate, really awesome beer. If you're in to west coast ipas, try this one, it's sculpin's better brother.

250th Review

Half scratched off, but the date seems to be 4/20/13 ... it's probably more likely to be 5/20/13 though, because I don't THINK Short's was bottling this in April.

Appearance: I mean, come on. Look at the label. Look at the name of the beer. Totally outrageous -- I love it! The beer itself is an insanely hazy yellow color with a tiny head that doesn't last long. A white ring clings to the glass. Minimal lacing. I love that haze though... seemingly all of Short's IPAs have that heavy haze.

Smell: Massive grapefruit. Some sweet malt aromas. I tend to love the smell of Short's IPA brews, but am let down by the flavor. But this time...

Taste: Wow. Thank you very much, Short's. I've been let down recently with some of the IPAs released, but this truly is outstanding. A short moment of almost flavorless sweetness on the front, but then the 156 IBUs punch you in the testicles as hard as possible, and then you're given that tropical/grapefruit/earthy/herby/piney mix of hops... total hop bomb. There's some sweetness in there to try and balance it out, but there's no doubt that this is one hell of a bitter IPA. The feel is thin initially with a mild/medium carbonation, but it seems to thicken up on the swallow.

An excellent beer if you want yourself an immensely bitter India Pale Ale. It looks good (dat haze!), it smells awesome, and it tastes very good. Thanks, Short's. This was delicious.
