Pours a thick black color with a khaki to tan colored head. Looks real intense for a black ipa. It's flavor is more dark malt dominated than hop dominated in my opinion, and that's fine with me for this one. In my opinion, this drinks more like a stout than anything else. It's big, thick, and mean for a beer of this style.

Well done, Short's!

This beer pours a lot like motor oil, which is a good sign for me. The nose has got a nice hop smell to it. It is pitch black, with a nice, dark, foamy head that stuck around for a while. The taste you get a nice hops bite, but it is somewhat mellowed out. It is a very rich Black IPA. Very delicious.

Great dark look with a smell of hops and roasted coffee and chocolate. Taste is of an ipa mixed with a stout or porter. This is by far the best black ipa I have had. Stone subliminal self rightious (rip) was my favorite but I like this even more. Being from Michigan I have had the luxury of getting this awesome beer for several years now. For those that are finally getting shorts in the market I highly recommend this if u can find it.

Best black IPA I've had to date. Pours a black with a nice off white inch thick head. Smells of chocolate and coffee with a bit of citrus and earthy hops. Taste is an incredible balanced citrus, fruity ester, and roasted malt flavor. Full mouth feel and a medium body.

12 fl. oz. bottle
Served in a becker style glass

It pours thick and viscous like a good stout. No light is getting through this beer. A meager pour yielded only an inch of tan head that leaves little lacing.

The smell is amazing. I get chocolate and coffee, but I also notice plenty of hop aroma.

The flavor starts out with those roasted flavors that I smelled, chocolate and coffee, but the hops run in to slap my palate with a healthy dose of bitterness that lingers a bit.

Full, chewy mouthfeel

This beer is a hopped up stout. I love the stout characteristics of this beer. The hops come in to contrast the traditional stout flavors. This bottle is a little older. I would love to try this fresh. I would also love to try it without the generous portion of hops. I think there is a fantastic stout hidden in this beer as well.

It's big, black and green- and it's back for good! Last year's seemed a bit more effervescent, but this is one of the boldest of its steez. Short's naysayers better reckonize. A hops and malt two hitter that'll make you question why you often pay so much for a 4pk that includes too much bourbon. If this were an 8pk, you could aka it- Robobeer. Naturally you'd want his permission.

Guess I am a sucker for Short's black Ipas as I love bludgeon yer eye as well (truth be told i am a sucker for black ipas in general). This beer is smoother and a little less bitter than Bludgeon. Drinks much more like a bitter stout like Bells expedition. Fantastic beer.

1/ 27/15 on neck of bottle

A- pours pitch black with a nice tan head. leaves a decent amount of lacing from a hardy pour.

S- dark malts with some alcohol.

T- not to far from the smell. alil bitter. very slight floral/ citrusy hop action trying to make a appearance but dominated by the roasted/ chocolate malt. also detect the slightest bit of coffee flavor from the malt.

M- medium/ heavy bodied. good carbonation.

DRINKABILITY- as i'm on number four of the sixer it's not terrible. won't buy again tho. too many hoppy brews out there.

Overall- I was honestly expecting more hop action coming from this brew. it's bitter and has a slightly floral/citrusy hop presence but it's pounded by the malt. this beer reminds me of I think it's anger by greenbush brewery and nighttime by lagunitas. it's playyyyyed! maybe it's the style TO ME but all these black ipa's seem the same. drinkable but nothing special. if you're looking for more of a dark malt driven showcase with some slight hop action this is a beer for you. I just prefer hop explosion.

one of the better shorts beers i have had, these guys are so hit or miss, so its nice to find a hit this strong, thanks to thebrewo for this one. everything you want in a black ipa here, piney bitter hops, literally like a forest in the night, its malt base is bitter too, tons of roast, bitter coffee grinds with the hops, but lots of body too, rich but dry, insanely flavorful, and honestly one of the best examples of the style i have had this year. it seems like the good ones they do never make it to colorado, but the hype around them is real. this has a cocoa layer in it, and some oily properties despite its seeming duality between hops and gain, these elements make it less bitter double jeopardy, and more approachable. it is different in its dry finish though, and in its well hidden abv. these black ipas often come across hot, and this one doesnt at all. palate coating but not super heavy, which is nice. i would imagine big C strain hops, although i cant be sure. not overly complex, but it doesnt need to be. a very easy drinking big beer, and frankly one of the more memorable ones from these guys. excellent late winter early spring seasonality as well.

Poured from bottle into well-used tulip glass. Color is pitch black, Slightly aggressive pour produces three fingers of fizzy mocha head that quickly dissipates. Seriously, I turned form the glass, to browse a thread here head was just gone. Thin film left behind, spotty lacing. Smell is citrus hops, roasted malt. Taste is absolutely wow. I expected something different, more bitter, even though it's billed as a DIPA and I've not found those to be so. There is a tiny bite on the end, but a bit sweet citrus and a bit roasted flavor dominates. Mouthfeel is surprisingly creamy, which was also unexpected. Bitter roast aftertaste, floral burps.
Oh, and the title is a Primus reference. Excellence all around. So far, Short's limited releases this year have been killing it over last year's.
Edit: Having this one again a year later and even more impressed. Creamier and more full of roasty goodness than I remember. Rating is raised from 4.12 to 4.43

Looks black as it claims to with a tiny ,mocha head. Smell is of hops, malt, caught a whiff of lemon. Each sip starts out like an IPA, mouth full of hops, but with a creamy aftertaste. Truly succeeds in being a creamy IPA unlike a hoppy porter, like some other black IPAs I've had. Damn good.

Dark Ale with distinct hop aroma, getting the Apollo scent but I'm not quite sure. Hops and coffee on the nose. Mouth feel is wet, malty and delicious. Great lacing, let it sit as it just gets better. i get black patent malts heavy with no smoke but a coffee grind palette and a slight sweet maltiness. IBU's are there but not a dominant hop finish but very crisp, fast finish. FINAL WORD: Shorts did it again, this beer is very good for the style, very nice for its style. I'd buy it again. cheers

Bottle shared with stillmatic2232, thanks man. First beer tried from Short's.

Pours black, with a one inch head, and not much lacing, really.

Aromas of pine, grapefruit, chocolate and coffee. Great aroma.

The aroma is better than the taste. Slightly watery at times, slightly muted hop flavor. The flavor is good, I just want more of it. Low amounts of roasted malt, some chocolate, pine, and grapefruit.

Medium to thin bodied, slightly disappointing. Crisp mouthfeel, finishes creamy, however. Fairly dry.

Pretty good, but not one of my favorite black ales.

A - Pours a dee black with a two-finger foamy tan head. Heavy amount of sticky lacing.

S - Light amoun of roasted malts with some earthy hops.

T - Starts off with light citrus, mostly grapefruit. Finish has a nice mix of roasted malts and piney hops. Lingering hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

O - Good beer and one of the better black IPAs I've had. Nice combination of roated malts and piney hop. Recommended.

Head is slow to form, but eventually forms a finger of solid, dark tan head. Retention is decent, and lacing is nice. Brew is a beautiful dark coffee brownish-black.

Ruby red grapefruit aroma bodes well for this Black DIPA. Some earthy and piney hops, as well. Dark chocolate roasted malts and a sweet honey aroma linger in the background only.

Big dose of chocolate, followed by citrus hops, finished with roasted malts and earthy hops. Long lasting roasted finish which intermingles with grapefruit pulp and citrus peel. Hints of mint, burnt coffee, and cream.

Medium feel, silky and smooth, yet lively. Long finish.

Black IPAs and hoppy stouts can fall into a gray area where what they're really trying to achieve can be a bit muddled. I think this one hits the target pretty well. The focus, from the aroma through the finish, is on the hops, although the dark roasty malts are very present.

12oz bottle poured into a Short's glass. Thanks Brian (brownbrian) for sending me a couple of these.

A- Pours an opaque dark black with about a quarter finger of creamy mocha head that has nice retention and slowly recedes to a flat top.

S- A good amount of roast and cocoa powder backed up by faint citrus hops in the back. Fairly aromatic, nice aroma, decent balance.

T- Fruity hops up front that add notes of pineapple and grapefruit and a light bitterness. Finishes with heavy cocoa powder and a bit of roast with the hop presence lingering a bit on the palate.

M- Medium bodied, very drinkable, nice carbonation level.

O- From a brewery I haven't been overly impressed with so far, this was definitely a quality black IPA and one of their better offerings that I've had. It had a nice balance, was flavorful, and very drinkable for the abv. One of the better black IPAs I've had and definitely worth trying.

Poured from a bottle into a Kahlua mug (don't hate).

A - Very dark and very little head. Grayish-brown not even covering entire surface area.

S - Scent is subtle, but more malty and stout-like.

T - Great malt flavor; toasty.

M - Creamy and, once-again, stout like.

O - Shorts has been hit or miss lately. I worry that they're doing too much by putting out so many different styles all the time. This, however, is not one of those misses. I picked this up as part of a mixed 6-pack, really enjoyed it, and could definitely go for another.

12oz bottle, unknown bottling date. Generously extra'd to me by Kevin, thanks man. Poured into a Bell's snifter today, 3/18/2014.

App- Pitch black opaque body that does not illuminate at all. Nice two finger mocha head with very good retention and lacing. Looks like a nice American stout.

Smell- Milk chocolate roastiness mixed in with citrusy hop goodness. Very interesting and complex even given the Black IPA style. Must be the fact that its a double IPA as well.

Flavour- Doesn't taste quite as good as it smells. A muddled mix of citrus and floral hops with milk chocolate, earthy dark malt bitterness and roasted malts. Trying to get a bead on this, but it's like eating grapefruit dark chocolate, except its in liquid form. It kinda works, but it doesn't work, at the same time.

Mouthfeel- Full bodied, slick resinous finish that is also creamy due to good carbonation. A little bit of boozy heat on the back end. Definite sipper.

Overall- Very interesting smelling Black DIPA that kind of gets muddled on the palate. Perhaps there's too much clashing with each other in terms of the citrusy hop flavours and strong dark malts. Still, I enjoyed this beer and would enjoy it again if presented with the opportunity.

12 oz into snifter. Looks like a stout from pour as well as throughout drinking it. Black body, creamy brown head, looks bodacious...
Hoppy on the nose, nice malt as well. Taste is unique, hard to pinpoint of this one bottle, but not bad by far.
Mouthfeel is a combo of porter and pale ale, not really dipa feel. Really smooth, creamy.
Overall, shes a keeper in my book. A different take on something that is a staple now in most fridges. Prost to Shorts on this one!

Black ale look with great lace that stays, head diminished to just a ring. Smells of roasted malts and hops but didn't last. For me this tastes great. I love the roasted flavors without the sweetness that maybe there with porters or stouts. Hence the refreshing balance that comes from the hops. Not sure if the carbonation is too much or needed to clean the palate from the richness that this has . Overall for the price of a six this is a nice goto if you like a black ipa. Oh, and I had no idea it was 9% abv until looking at the label.

I've long been a doubter of Shorts Brewing but having tried this offering, I'm a step closer to being a believer. This ale pours a deep rich black (almost stout like) with a very slight tan head and substantial lacing. The nose is perplexing. There are substantial hop notes with a good deal of pine and grass along side those of coffee and carmely roasted malts. Unfortunately there is also something slightly off and skunky in nature. The mouthfeel is smooth and clean. Medium bodied with a nice coating feel. It is actually lighter than I would have guessed it to be. The flavors mirror the nose. With a bitter piney hoppiness upfront followed by a deep coffee/chocolaty malty sweetness. This is damn good and one of the best black ipas I've had. Maybe there is hope for Shorts yet.

Bottle into tulip

Appearance - Black with a 1 finger slightly off white beige head. Nice lacing.

Smell - Very rich in the dark malt category. Has dark coffee, dark chocolate, and sort of an in and out floral hop character that blends nicely with the roastiness.

Taste - First you get a nice semi piney, semi citrusy, resin, and bitterness. As the bitterness begins to mellow just slightly, you enter an entirely different stage of flavors. The end flavor is roasty and somewhat smokey flavor. You get some dark chocolate, coffee, char, and just slight bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Full bodied, medium carbonation, refreshing smooth.

Overall - Good beer. Unique style of beer. You feel as if your drinking two styles of beer at once. On one hand you have all of the citrusy goodness of an IPA, and on the other roasty characteristics that closely resemble a stout especially upon smell. Not dissipointed, glad I tried it.

Goodnight Bodacious

Had on-tap at BoatWorks and served in a shaker pint.

Appearance: Black. Finger of dark brown head. Great lacing, (4/5)

Smell: Excellent mix of hops and roasted malt... fruity and earthy hops one whiff, roastiness the next. Really nice stuff that I like. Doesn't blow me away, but great balance for the style. (3.75/5)

Taste/feel: On point. Excellent. Phenomenal blend of sweetness and bitterness that make this a brew to remember. Again, plenty of nice hoppiness coupled with chocolate and roastiness. Could you ask for much more? The brew is also nice and full in feel with a medium carbonation. Very nice. (4.25/5, 4.5/5)

Excellent beer. Definitely one of the very best I've had from the style. Great balance. Doesn't favor the hops nor the roast. I really like this brew.

It's tectactoe night in Minnesota! Another brew arriving from Michigan. 12 oz. bottle, approached with trepidation - Short's has had plenty of great, horrid, & everything in between for me over the years.

Pour is true black with mild carbonation. Nose is roast that leans towards setting-off-fire-alarms scorched. Overwhelms whatever else might be lurking in the depths.

Goodnight Bodacious would be a great wing-man. Torched roast flings itself at the tongue, & is yanked back from the edge of the volcano by a healthy dash of bitter, piney hops. Dark chocolate leavens the shock to the system. Herbal & orange bits scatter through the midsection, leaving the finish to soft caramel & the scrapings at the bottom of a bi-annual cleaning of the coffee pot. Drinkable? Six ounces in my mini-chalice, & I'm happy.

Short's: Purveyor of the Gangrenously Whack. This is one of few black ales that doesn't disappoint, perhaps because it goes right up to the edge of too much, then hits the accelerator. Strange, & very good.
