Pours a thick black color with a khaki to tan colored head. Looks real intense for a black ipa. It's flavor is more dark malt dominated than hop dominated in my opinion, and that's fine with me for this one. In my opinion, this drinks more like a stout than anything else. It's big, thick, and mean for a beer of this style.

Well done, Short's!

Pours a dark brown... basically black with a medium tan head that goes down quickly. Scent is that of a roasty porter or coffee stout. A ton of roasted malt and some dark malt with roasted hop aromas. Very interesting beer here. This has some hoppy notes, but drinks like a well-crafted, roasty porter. The hops are just a plus. Taste is just as it smell. Roasted malt and hops with some chocolate and coffee. Espresso with coffee grounds and hops. This beer is fantastic! One of the best "black ipas" and one of the best "american black ales" I've ever had. Mouthfeel is full and creamy. Drinkability is high.

I've long been a doubter of Shorts Brewing but having tried this offering, I'm a step closer to being a believer. This ale pours a deep rich black (almost stout like) with a very slight tan head and substantial lacing. The nose is perplexing. There are substantial hop notes with a good deal of pine and grass along side those of coffee and carmely roasted malts. Unfortunately there is also something slightly off and skunky in nature. The mouthfeel is smooth and clean. Medium bodied with a nice coating feel. It is actually lighter than I would have guessed it to be. The flavors mirror the nose. With a bitter piney hoppiness upfront followed by a deep coffee/chocolaty malty sweetness. This is damn good and one of the best black ipas I've had. Maybe there is hope for Shorts yet.

A - Pours a dee black with a two-finger foamy tan head. Heavy amount of sticky lacing.

S - Light amoun of roasted malts with some earthy hops.

T - Starts off with light citrus, mostly grapefruit. Finish has a nice mix of roasted malts and piney hops. Lingering hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

O - Good beer and one of the better black IPAs I've had. Nice combination of roated malts and piney hop. Recommended.

A - Pours an impenetrable black with a finger and a half of mocha head. Left no lacing.

S - Dark roasted malts and coffee, followed by a small amouunt of citrus and pineapple.

T - Moderates between roasted and toasted malts along with mango and pineapple. Throws some banana into the mix as well.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O - Overall, It was definitely good, although it was far more like a stout than an IPA. Needs more balance.

Not really a big fan of this one. Pours jet black and almost looks like a stout, but drinks like a normal IPA.

A: Pours pitch black with mocha head heavy lacing at the edges and a good dusting on top.

S: Aroma of citrus and ash. Some orange rind and pine. Pure bitterness with dark deep roasted malt scents.

T: Bitter orange peel, deep woods pine and charcoal. Deep bitter black patent malt battle with citrus hops. Goodnight bodacious has a Bitter finish that was hard won by the hops. Flavorful is an understatement and this is tasty but definitely would be tough to have more than one of these for me. Ideally I would have had half a bottle and I like DIPAs. Lots of licorice / anice flavor in here as well.

M: Medium to thick body for a ABA, medium carbonation.

O: Overall this is a tasty American black ale. It is too much for me right now however. Maybe its spring however I am just not a fan of this right now. As fate would have it, I dumped 3/4 of this beer on my rug. Oops. Maybe it was predetermined as I wasnt particularly interested....

Awesome caramel colored lasting foamy head on thick black fluid. Missing much lacing.

Burnt, pine, grass, roasty, caramel, very stout ;)

Chewy, deep, smooth, delicous, super roasty without the burden of smoke. Creamy, heavy carbonation, high dry bitting bitterness, lots of heavy dark chocolate. Resinous, piney, green, dank burn.

Highly Recommended!!! Drinks a lot like a RIS... Thanks, Adam.

Bottle dated 2/23/2017. Poured into IPA glass. It pours black as night, with one finger of mocha-colored head and lacing. It smells of roasted malt, burnt coffee, and whiffs of chocolate and pine needles. The taste is nicely roasty with dark malt, burnt coffee grounds, bakers chocolate. As the glass warmed, I tasted more of the coffee. It has a burnt, bitter, piny hop finish and a decidedly bitter after taste. The various tastes blend very nicely. This is medium-bodied, with an almost creamy mouth feel, light carbonation, a the 9% ABV gives it nice substance. Overall, it is a very fine Black Ale. It's right up there with Wookey Jack, Dark Penance, Night Time, and Dubhe, and it's close to my absolute favorite Black Ale, Carton's Epitome. I'm very glad to have tried this one and thank @superspak for the opportunity.

Appearance is a dark black color with light head and medium carbonation. Smells are heavy on citrus, with some sweeter malt smells like molasses and raisin mixed in. Taste is that of a very balanced malty IPA with a crisp bitter finish. Mouthfeel is thick for an IPA. This is very drinkable and tasty.

Thanks to my friend Scott for sending this to me! You send me a lot of Shorts and they are very hit or miss, but this one is a definite hit!

I'm usually not a fan of black IPA's but I'm willing to try anything once. This beer is SURPRISINGLY good. Shorts Brewing has been hit or miss IMO but this one is excellent! A nice solid fairly malty backbone to complement the flavorful hops. Not too overwhelming on either the malt or the well rounded hop profile, I would love to have more than one of these, although I would feel much better about drinking it pretty fresh (as I just did). Good choice and thanks again, my favorite black IPA to date!
