Style: Altbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Alter Spalter is true to the old world German style ale with a light brown color and pleasant nose. The malt character is low with soft, caramel notes and a unique banana-like sweetness. The beer is well balanced with a crisp clean nature and a lack of lingering malty flavors.

12oz bottle poured into a Strange glass. Slightly aggressive pour resulted in a three quarter inch off-white head that quickly dissipated. Slight lacing left behind and during drinking. Appearance is dark, murky orange.

S - First, caramel maltiness with a bit of sweetness, followed by citrusy fruitiness (not quite orange, but farther away from grapefruit) with a light hoppiness coming along for the ride.

T- The fruitiness shows itself even more here, definitely orange with a very slight bit of banana (not picking it up consistently throughout the glass), a tiny bit of spiciness. The caramel maltiness tastes quite nice with those additions and finishes with a light bitterness (though perhaps a bit more than expected from the style).

M - Nice medium body with light-medium carbonation.

O - Quite a surprise for me. As a slightly hopped up version on a delicate style it was certainly in my preference zone. Drank quite easily, was very crisp and refreshing. I will pick up more next year.

Bottle shared by Adam. Thanks man.

Rusty, orange copper body. Fairly hazy with minimal head. Aromas of sweet malt, candied oranges. Earthy with a hint of spice. Mild bitterness in the finish. Pretty good.

A - Pours a cloudy burnt orange with a two-finger off-white foamy head. The head dissapates quickly leaving light soapy lacing.

S - Aromas of caramel malts, earthy hops, and a light fruitiness.

T - Follows the nose pretty closely. There is a sweetness upfront from the caramel malt mixed with some grassy earthiness from the hops. The finish has some light fruitiness and some light hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Very smooth and crisp mouthfeel.

O - This was a very enjoyable beer. Very crisp and easy drinking.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 10/9/2014. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big toasted bread, honey, light caramel, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of bready malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of toasted biscuit, honey, light caramel, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of toasted biscuit, honey, light caramel, pear, apple, light banana, pepper, herbal, floral, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and robustness of bready malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Dusseldorf style altbier. All around good balance and robustness of bready malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
