Bourbon Evil Urges is a Belgian Dark Strong Ale aged in bourbon barrels with a deep dark brown color and thick viscous allure. A sharp aroma of chocolate and molasses hits the senses reminiscent of a rich liqueur. Aided by additions of Belgian amber candi sugar the initial flavors are sweet and malty with some unique dark fruit qualities. Defined roast malt character with a slight black coffee bitterness lead into an intense warming finish, rounding out this full bodied experience.

Appearance - On tap at the brewpub, the beer poured a vicious black color with a tan head.
Smell - Bourbon notes were apparent, but there was also the sweetness of the malts.
Taste - Initially, I noticed super smooth bourbon. This was a sipper. Chocolate notes were accompanied by light black licorice notes. The aftertaste was lightly warming with no burn. The profile was ultra smooth.
Mouthfeel - The carbonation was long over come by the thick body.
Overall - I wish I could get Private Stache where I live.

Purchased in 2021, it's now 13.8% !!
On a recent trip to Short’s Elk Rapids I picked up a handful of pub only releases including this special variant on one of my all time favorite Short’s beers, with spectacular variant art- although in years past the label was cat-face-shaped, bring that back!
Super murky thick brown into black pour, fine tan head, sticks in a thick band around the glass. Huge belgian stout bourbon nose; has that daark berry fruity yeast, with chocolate, caramel, nutty molasses, bourbon boozy. Drinks even better- amazing complexity! First of all, so much organic milk chocolate, cacoa, caramel dry- all those stout flavors without unnecessary sweetness. Lightened up by those those fruity dark brown Belgian malt and yeast flavors, giving fig, raisin, raspberry, toffee. The softest kiss of Belgian banana, clove, spice that really blends well- don’t be turned off by “Belgian Style” if you don’t normally like these elements of Belgian styles. An absolute doozy, I can feel it in my *feet*- I can’t go without mentioning a big punch of bourbon on the palate, but it’s oak inflected as well, mature and warm. Mouthfeel is off the charts, both rich and pillowy, light and dark, it dissolves beautifully on the end, slightly more carb than expected, but no booziness on the linger.
Hugely impressed! Wasn’t expecting such complexity, such massive flavors. This one is honestly worth going to Elk Rapids for.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 10/2015. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger fairly dense and flufy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, molasses, raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, pear, apple, bourbon, toasted oak, nuttiness, and dark bread; with light notes of coconut, licorice, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, banana, clove, peppercorn, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Minimal booze in the aromas as it warms. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, candi sugar, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel notes; with big strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, molasses, raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, pear, apple, bourbon, toasted oak, nuttiness, and dark bread; with light notes of coconut, licorice, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, banana, clove, peppercorn, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Minimal herbal, grassy, roasted bitterness; and yeast/bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, molasses, dark fruit, pear, apple, bourbon, toasted oak, nuttiness, dark bread, coconut, licorice, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, candi sugar, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a solid roasted bitter/sweet and yeast/bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying sweetness after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering bitter/spiciness. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety, and slightly slick/sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is amazing. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%, with zero barrel booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is an amazing barrel aged Belgian strong dark ale! All around amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, candi sugar, fruity yeast, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV, with the mildy bitter/spicy/drying finish; amazingly soft/silky feel. Perfectly balanced rich malts, fruity yeast, and barrel presence/integration. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly amazing offering, and world class style example. Time has been amazing with this one. This was a lot less spicy/banana on the yeast than my base beer review. This was the smoothest BSDA I've ever had on mouthfeel.

Finally, a Bourbon version that compliments the original instead of overwhelming it. I was initially wary of trying this one because Evil Urges is one of my favorites, but its absence from the release schedule the last few years convinced me this is the only way I'd get my fix.
Poured from bottle to snifter. Deep, oily, dark, and rich in color with a collar of khaki foam. Nice aromas of dark fruits, and brown sugar sweetness, some bourbon boozy notes. Flavor is warm without burning, with lots of fig and dark cherry, dark chocolate, and sweet maltiness. It's not Evil Urges, but it's just as great.

Pours Brown. Thin, bubbly, tan head that Fades fast.
smells Belgian sugar, dark fruit, light bourbon. Very sweet.
Taste sweet sugar, light raisin, dark fruit, hints of yeast, light bourbon and oaky vanilla. Finishes sweet with a fruity linger. Medium body and fizzy lower carbonation.
All that is bourbon aged is not good
