Thanks to Jeff for giving me a bottle of this to take home - only available at the Short's brewpub in Belair, released during their 9th anniversary party. Controversius Maximus is a "double" Controversi-ALE with two times the amount of Simcoe hops and added specialty malts, much akin to the previous year's "Aww Jeah", a double version of Huma Lupa. Shorts has been killing it on the IPA front this year, so I was very excited to have a chance to try this one.

It pours the color of a slightly worn in penny, a bit lighter at the edges - almost a deep, deep amber. It's mildly translucent, allowing a good bit of light through it, but the very center appears to be hazy as hell and opaque for the most part. It's got a bubbly, wishy-washy, soapy white head that forms quickly and recedes almost as fast. No lace left behind, although its stark white color was impressive.

The aroma contains a beautiful fruity character that hits you front and center - tangerine, guava, and grapefruit. Huge citrus presence with a sound juiciness, almost "gushing". A few whiffs and I'm already salivating. Also present is a good bout of resinous, nearly-dank pine needles with some spicier leafy notes in the finish. The bread-like malty backbone appears to be pretty large in size, but merely cowers in comparison to the gigantic Simcoe hop bill upon it.

Controversius Maximus hits my lips and palate with an initial orange and grapefruit combination, but is quickly (almost immediately) followed up by an unadulterated hop assault. A huge mix of leaves, pines, ho poils, and resins backed by a solid heap of biscuit and bread-like malts go to work on my taste buds and leave my palate spent. A strong, almost herbal bitterness hits about a second into the sip and resonates soundly into the finish, along with spice, leaves, and fading citrus peels. The malt tries to balance with some sweetness, but there is no use - it's no match for the army of hops.

The middle-of-the-road carbonation leaves room for a silky, albeit oily mouth feel. Medium bodied, perhaps just a touch heavier feeling than the original Controversi-ALE. The increased alcohol is almost unnoticed - it's hidden very well by the nice collab of flavors from the increase in Simcoe hops. I think I do prefer this double-IPA just a bit when compared to its lighter, single-IPA counterpart. More flavorful and bursting with a larger amount of hop and citrus flavors. It may not be Shorts best IPA ever (maybe not even top five), but it's still pretty damn good. Too bad it wont see distribution!

Darker golden pour, good lacing. Scents of lemon, honey, funky hops, a bit of floral scent too. Scent is of a typical DIPA, lets see about the taste...

Wow, Shorts really delivered on this one, we've got a wonderful and complex hop flavor that isn't too bitter and yet still has all the flavor you'd expect from a DIPA. Balanced and full mouthfeel with light-moderate heaviness for a DIPA. Does not disappoint, I'd certainly recommend this and it is one of my favorites from Shorts thus far.
