Style: American Pale Lager

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A super hopped American pale lager brewed exclusively with Zeus hops. The wet green dank aroma of the Zeus hops pour out of this beer with sweet hints of orange. Pleasant resiny hop essence dominate the flavor profile transitioning quickly to a bold bitterness that seems amplified due to the light clean lager finish

Pours a hazy, gold color. 1/3 inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of spicy hops, floral hops, slights sweet malt, slight pale malt, a grass. Fits the style of an American Pale Lager. Mouth feel is very sharp, clean, and an average carbonation level. Tastes of zest, strong citrus, spicy hops, floral hops, grass, and slight sweet malt. Overall, good appearance feel, but the blend has too much orange zest.

This beer pours a hazy golden color. There is nice carbonation in the beer, and the head was fairly thick and frothy. Some lacing. The nose has a nice citrus hint to it. It has notes of orange to me. The taste is a lot hoppier than I expected. Nice hop bitterness to it. Very slight orange taste. I would say that it has a "dry" feel to it. Delicious brew from Short's.

Pours a straw color with a finger of white head. The nose has strong lemon notes. The body is light as is the flavor. The finish is pleasantly semi- dry and semi-hoppy.

A - Clear gold body, moderate white head, persistent, and very sticky. Lots of lacing.

S - Pine. A bit of funk. A sharp acidic bite.

T - Following the nose. Orange notes in the middle, subtle but present. Punchy bitter close.

M - Brisk carbonation. Bright. Mild drying in the close.

O - A decent pale lager. Not special, but tasty enough.

Medicinal off taste. Like the aroma but the band aid flavor ruins it for me. Not to have again. Zeus beard is dirty. This is actually a drain pour. Avoid

It smells ripe. Green with orange. Tastes pretty zesty and hoppy. A lot of fresh green hops and sharp orange rind. Strong bitterness. Fairly dry/pithy. Not much in the way of grains here. It really tastes more like a session ipa than an ipl to me.

12 oz. bottle, bottled on 04/14/16 stamped on the bottleneck. "India Style Pale Lager" " Brewed With Bitter Orange Rind And Zeus Hops". Acquired a single bottle of this stuff from the local bottle shop. No abv listed on the bottle.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - A crisp golden body on the pour, semi-translucent with over a finger of frothy soapy white head that stays awhile, leaves nice random scattered thin lacing, and lingers as a cap. Appears adequately carbonated. Looks nice for what it is.

S - Aroma is fresh, earthy, bitter, hoppy, with a bitter spicy horseradish aroma coming through. Maybe slightly grainy, but the hops are mostly the dominant players.

T - Taste follows the nose: fresh, fruity, floral, bitter, hoppy, grassy, notes of hay. Bitter, piney, resinous finish; this thing definitely tastes more like an IPA to me than an IPL, but who am i to say. Not pulling much grain from this, no evident notes of lager yeast. Apparently, Zeus hops are very nice.

M - Feel is very smooth, crisp, creamy, & easy-drinking. Light-bodied with good carbonation. Nice piney, resinous, bitter hop finish. Semi-dry finish.

Overall, a very nice hoppy 'IPL' from Short's, though this definitely tastes more along the lines of an IPA to me. Either way, a nice offering.

Bottled on 4/14/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy pale yellow golden with a fluffy eggshell white head that slowly falls leaving great retention and sticky lacing. The aromas have an earthy skunk hop vibe going on. Some veggie notes. Slightly floral. Malts are present and do their thing, but the hop aromas seem to shine. The flavors seem to follow the nose. Very earthy with more veggie notes. Nice hop flavor and hop bitterness. Although the hops do their thing, it still has a lager vibe to it. Some rubber notes. It finishes pretty clean. Alcohol obviously goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is nice. It's light with active carbonation. It remains creamy and fluffy. Very smooth and easy to drink.

This is a really nice IPL. Definitely worth checking out if you come across it. Well done.

12 oz

Pours a clear light golden, sugar white head retains as a film.

Smells of fresh barley and wheat, lemongrass, and fresh floral hops.

Taste is of grassy malts, lemongrass, hints of citrus, and a dry vegetal hop finish.

Light to medium body, with lightly tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

A very dry sessionable lager with very little malt balancing out the vegetable bitter hops. The hops aren't all that bitter, there's just nothing much competing with them. Also, the hops are pretty much only bitter, no real flavor from them. So that's what it is. The addition of orange rind doesn't add hardly anything other than more bitterness either. For what it is, clean and crisp and drinks very easy.

Having stepped back from The CANQuest (tm) on a brief basis, I have decided to stick with bottles for another review this evening. My apologies for this temporary interruption in our regularly scheduled program.

From the bottle: "Brewed With Bitter Orange Rind and Zeus Hops"; "Handmade by people who care. (tm)"

I Pop!ped the cap and gave it a heavy-handed pour, producing three-plus fingers of dense, foamy, eggshell-white head with great retention. Color was a pretty Yellow-Gold with NE-quality clarity, causing the Gelt Gang of Mammon, Croesus & Midas to drop in for a taste. Nose had a pleasant orange citrusiness that reminded me of the environmentally-friendly cleaner that replaced the really toxic stuff back in the early-1990s. This is a Lager?!? Mmmm. Mouthfeel was soft, like the noticeable difference between drinking hard water and soft water. The taste was still very citrusy and very much orange-y. Mmmm. Finish was semi-dry, which was interesting since the label mentioned "Bitter Orange Rind" and yet it had more of a sweet orange flavor. Score another win for Short's!

Poured from bottle into plain ol' pint glass. Color is pale, hazy yellow, and yields a finger of white fluffy head that's here and gone. Head settles to a centimeter cap that hangs about. Some lacing. Highly carbonated, with lots of teeny yeast floaties swirling about, some settling on the bottom. Extra vitamins for me, I guess. Aroma is bread and bright citrus, lemon/orange zest. Taste follows, yeasty goodness, lager fresh, with a hop bite on the end. Clean finish is nice.

12 fl. oz bottle
Served in a pokal glass

L - It is a soft golden color. There is a slight haze to this beer. It is capped with three inches of rocky, off-white head that leaves some lacing.

S - The smell has citrus with what I perceive as a lime influence, contrary to the orange rind which I do not pick up.

T - The taste is just like the smell. I get citrus with a focus on lime. The finish is bitter with a lingering aftertaste.

M - Moderate

O - I must not have a sophisticated palate. All IPL's taste very similar to me. This one resonates as more bitter than previous IPL's. It's a pretty good beer. I have yet to dislike a beer of this style.

As with many Short's beers, an adventurous flavor profile. Neat and clean, with strong hints of cigar and pine with a hint of orange. It lingers with a pleasant aftertaste. Not big flavor but lots of subtle overtones.

12 ounce bottle dated 09/24/14

Bottle pours with a beautiful dark golden, almost orange color and a one finger, slowly dissipating white head. The beer leaves solid lacing as well.

Aroma is a healthy dose of clean lager yeast, along with some stale, vague orange/citrus and earthiness.

Taste follows the aroma, joined by the some sweetness from the orange/citrus mid taste. Lager characteristics dominate the finish as it warms.

Mouthfeel is medium (surprising for a lager) and carbonation is on the medium-high end. Bitterness is on the high end. This beer is crisp.

Overall, I was disappointed in this Short's offering, especially after the high bar they had set with Alien Einstein and MMMKay. The lager aspects of this beer really outshined the hops, and the orange addition did not help matters in this case.

Pours a hazy dark gold with a bug foamy white head that lingers. Citrus aroma, of orange zest, hops, and a hint of grapefruit. Taste is bitter and smooth, starts a bit floral and orangey, then picks up a big hoppy bitterness and bready yeast, with some creamier malt and sugar. Lingering bitterness.

Very light and crisply yellow. Nice clarity, small white foamy head.

Grassy, earthy, mild aroma, potato-y, light.

Flavor is super light is crisp earthy bitter bite to finish. Relaxed carbonation and zero sweetness, grassy malt. Could be more hop forward...

A great easy drinker for a warm summer afternoon. Crisp, airy, light, and relaxing. Well done Shorts.

A - Straw color, not much head, lots of carbonation.
S - Citrus, piney, dank, grass.
T - Citrus and piney hop smack, resin, bitter all the way through and not really balanced.
O - Decent, but not really digging the category much. Give me a IPA or give me a lager.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 5/3/2013. Pours slightly hazy golden amber color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass; with some moderate streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon zest, orange zest, grapefruit, tangerine, orange rind, floral, pine, grass, light honey, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and orange rind notes; with a fair amount of malt balance and good strength. Taste of lemon, orange rind, orange zest, tangerine, floral, pine, grapefruit, grass, light honey, and floral earthiness. Good amount of earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, citrus rind, floral, pine, grass, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of hop and orange rind flavors; with a light malt balance and light lingering bitterness after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a crisp and very sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice session IPL. All around nice balance and complexity of hop and rind flavors; with plenty of flavor for 4.5% and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Very crisp and clean mouthfeel.

O - This is a very crisp and clean lager. This is a great easy drinking summer beer.

A slightly cloudy golden pour with little lacing and a few larger bubles. Scent of very fragrant hops, grapefruit, orange, and a hint of lavender. Taste is predominately of a rather earthy hops, a bit of sweet citrus, and little else - which strikes me as unbalanced. I feel like this is predominately a brew that showcases the specific Zeus hops used in it and is therefore lacking in balance. I feel it would have been much better balanced with a bit more of a malt component. Mouthfeel has a bite from the beginning, but doesn't linger long and the carbonation is very light and fine. Overall an interesting brew, considering the hops, but I believe could use a second revision with better balance.

bottle into Duvel glass

appearance: clear orange-ish yellow with foamy white head

smell: piney citrusy hops with a bready lager aroma mixed in

taste: pretty bitter, lots of hop presence, some floral and citrus notes throughout. Not much on the backbone, the hops linger in the aftertaste creating a refreshingly sweet bitterness.

mouthfeel: very light like a lager, average carbonation

overall: To me this tastes like the bastard step child between a nice lager and an IPA, leaning more towards to the IPA side. Very earthy hop bitterness that ends with a cold lager smoothness that goes together oh so well, this may be my favorite beer from Short's, hopefully ill be able to find it again someday, I made this 6-pack last quite awhile, so fresh...

A - Poured out a small half finger eggs shell white head that dissipated rather fast. The body is crystal clear and light yellow.

S - Lovely sweetness of orange and a punch of hops (pine, citrus, grapefruit) that go rather well with its malt bill. No detection of Alcohol.

T - Wow this has a bite right from the beginning which lingers throughout and take over this one. Can you say lemon rind. Not very balanced with the extreme bitter bite and the low malt bill.

M - Light bodied and really easy drinking. Carbonation is good and the bitterness is left on your palate with a heck of a bite.

O - This beer is easy drinking but is unbalanced in my mind. It could use a bigger malt bill to match this seemingly unbalanced bitterness of the lemon rind. Session beers that are this hopped up just do not seem to work in my mind. Not my favorite from shorts but never the less another interesting beer to try. Cheers!

Tried this beer thrice over the past couple days, once warmer and twice fridge temp. Careful with this beer, temp makes a huge difference.

Appearance is pleasant, a pale, clear golden color with a smaller white head.

The nose is nice, a piney, strong hop presence comes wafting up.

Taste - This is where temp makes a huge difference. Warm, this beer is hard to drink. The bitterness is so overwhelming that the beer is just unpleasant. The earthy bitterness coats the tongue and makes the beer hard to swallow. When cold, the bitterness is much more subdued and the beer becomes enjoyable. The orange peel makes it's subtle presence felt, and it plays nicely with the earthy hops.

Overall, this is a great attempt at a session IPL. Plenty of flavor and they go down incredibly smooth when properly chilled. The flavor could be a bit more pleasing, I prefer hops with a citrus or tropical fruit taste, but this is definitely something I will drink again.

A: Light golden straw color, fast fading white head, moderate amount of micro bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass, very clear.

S: Prominent citrus nose with lemon, grapefruit rind, orange peel. Also has some pine and earthy undertones.

T: As one would expect with the IPL label, this is a very hoppy lager. Bitter orange peel (not surprising), ruby red grapefruit, piney resin, and faint grassy earthy notes. Bitterness is substantial, though it is not the most bitter IPL I've had.

M: The massive hoppiness attempts to trick the palate into making you think this is a bigger bodied beer. However, this most definitely feels like a lager, leaning more towards the thin side, though it does not approach watery. Carbonation is a little bit lower than I would like.

O: This compares well to Sam Adams IPL, and I think Beard of Zeus edges it out by a small margin. Extremely hoppy and delicious lager that I will be sure to buy more of next year if it is released.

Overall:
I drank this next to another IPL (india pale lager). Wolverine brewing company (in Ann Arbor MI) has a few beers in the same style. I was able to taste the orange rind up front, but there is something about those Zeus hops (and rind blend) that really gives the beer something unique- and made it taste much different than the Wolverine IPL.

Appearance:
Hazy golden color (think Oberun)

Smell:
Honestly not that great or strong, really faint smells.

Taste:
I would describe the taste in a few sequences:
1. The orange rind gives an almost Oberun-like taste upfront
2. The hops hit you and you taste something completely different
3. Not long after the hops hit you, you also start tasting the traditional flavors of a good lager, and you can still taste the hops
4. The finish is something mixed between some traditional IPA-like flavors and some smokey wood notes (hickory, cedar, etc.)

Mouthfeel:
Good. A lot of carbonation on the tongue, a lot of fluidity elsewhere.

This beer was good, and the complexity of the taste was welcome. I'm not sure what it is about Short's beer, but they quality of their beer has improved greatly. I'm not sure what their changes have been over the years, but I also had a softparade recently and don't remember it tasting so good since the last time I had it.
