This is an amber ale brewed with Belgian yeast.

It pours a glowing amber with billowy foam.

Lightly floral with pleasing aroma.

Delicately flavored with the floral character complementing the amber ale malt nicely.
This is a great combination. A unique take on a typically tired style that really enhances it.

Poured from bottle to tulip. A few fingers of fluffy, white head settles to a cap, leaving behind rings of soapy lacing. Color is alternately amber, cherrywood, or garnet and brown depending on how the light catches it. Liquid is clear with some small streams of carbonation rising to the surface.
Aroma is one of my favorites: Belgian yeast. Bubblegum, juicy citrus, and floral hops. Taste is all that and banana, caramel malt, and subdued clove. Low bitterness, smooth finish.
Overall, a pleasant and satisfying substitute for last year's Dolly Dagger.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 1/15/2016. Pours lightly hazy deep reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big strawberry, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, papaya, mango, light banana/bubblegum, pepper, clove, caramel, brown sugar, biscuit, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big strawberry, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, papaya, mango, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, biscuit, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate floral bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of strawberry, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, papaya, mango, pepper, clove, light banana/bubblegum, caramel, brown sugar, biscuit, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness and yeast spice as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding hoppy Belgian amber ale style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops, fruity/spicy yeast, and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

A brownish red Belgian ale that explodes with fruit filled aromas of strawberry, banana, and nectarine. Malt sweetness is quite low, allowing similar fruit flavors throughout, complimented by hints of spice and a slight bitterness.

Exploring the red side of Belgian ale, the brewers at Short's see the potential in the drier, toastier and hoppier American red ale and instead of the cleaner yeast-neutral character of American ale yeast, they employ the characterful fruit and spice charm from Belgian ale yeast add a more complex and rounded flavor spread.

Medium amber and mildly hazed, the beer's off-white lather skirts the rim with a long and dense fluidity. Toasty, citrusy and vinous to the nose- the hops, esters, yeast spices and malt play an immediate role in scent while its taste is supple and sweet with caramel, bread crust and a nutty pecan character.

While the toasted and caramelized taste of hops remain in support of the growing complexity, its sweetness trails smoothly and gradually while the hop flavors of grapefruit, lime, orange and berry extend into the yeast profile of apple, melon and pawpaw. The beer's balance finds a peppery tone with hints of cinnamon and coriander before the hops lay down their lasting, piney, bitter trail. Finishing with the vinous nature of rosé, the beer's new surprises in flavor lurk around every turn.

Medium-bodied and creamy, the beer's carbonation gives a gentle prickle to the tongue but is shy of the champagne dry bubbliness of sparkling wine that Belgian ale can often exhibit, the beer's bready, crusty and bitter finish ensures balance even in mouthfeel. A soft afterglow of nuttiness and citrus outlast the spice and has the tastebuds begging for pepperoni pizza as a pairing.

Bottled 1/15 and poured 2/21. $2 single. Another new Short's beer... always an obligation to try them out.

Pours lookin' sexy. A modestly hazy copper red color with a tiny creamy ring of a head that leaves some nice lacing. The smell is crazy interesting... I say this in a not terrible way, although it'll certainly come off that way -- it smells a decent bit like cherry cough medicine. Surprising amount of cherry, a Belgian funk, and I also pick up... hops? Oily, resinous hops are definitely in the aroma for me, though I could be imagining it. There is a banana note in there as well. Either way, this smells interesting.

The taste is slightly more awesome. This has a strange sort of spiciness and Belgian character that make it taste quite unique.. it's hard to pinpoint. The more I sip, the more it changes. Strange. A green tea or something sort of flavor, maybe? Biscuity/bready on the finish... the flavor overall is something of banana with a citrus rind for bitterness, dark and maraschino cherries, and then some bread and biscuits near the end... some spiciness as well? An essence of bubblegum? It's like a hefeweizen/dunkelweizen combo with hops or something. The feel is moderate with a high-ish prickly carbonation.

This is a one-of-a-kind beer. One sip tastes one way, then the other seems entirely different. It's certainly not without its Belgian characteristics, that's for sure. This is an intriguing brew from Short's that definitely warrants a purchase. So many flavors going on.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter.

Pours a dark amber/orange, slightly hazy, with a one finger head on a hard pour, some soapy lacing. Smell is both citrusy and resiny hops, caramel, Belgian yeast, a little banana when warm. Taste is caramel, light malt, resiny hops, yeast, some citrus- orange, hops, kind of a creamy taste. Smooth, a little bit of a creamy feel, good body, appropriate level of carbonation.

This has a very different profile, hard for me to describe. Very good flavors and aromas, well worth trying. Kind of wish I grabbed a couple more.

A - Pours a hazy reddish brown with a two finger white head. The head dissapates quickly leaving spotty lacing.

S - Aroma of Belgian yeast, bubblegum, and tropical fruits.

T - The taste follows the aroma. Belgian yeast, tropical fruits, caramel malts, and bubblegum throughout.

M - Light body with medium carbonation. Crisp mouthfeel with a smooth dry finish.

O - This was a nice suprise. Good balance of Belgian and Pale Ale flavors. Would drink again.

The beer pours with strong red highlights. The aroma hits the nose with spicy and piney notes with some sweetness. The taste follows with the sweetness somewhat diminished and hops contributing to the overall balance. An interesting beer! (I said "piney notes" above which may not be accurate as I can't quite identify this aroma component.)

This is a bubblegum bomb of the highest order. Both smell and taste are dominated by bubblegum. Otherwise rather pleasant. Not sure this is listed under the correct style, as there is almost no hop presence.

This beer really surprised me! I wasn't expecting much, but ended up coming out of this one very pleased.
L - Beautiful red/copper color, a bit of lacing on the glass
S - Not much happening on the nose here, definitely get some of the Belgian + hop character, but aroma wasn't anything special
T - Taste was nice, great character from malt and light hop character, some slight tartness going on as well. Combines some classic Belgian flavor (banana, spice) with an interesting tart twist.
F - Just the right amount of carbonation here.

Really nice surprise from Short's!

12 ounce bottle, dated 01/15/15

Bottle into goblet with hazy amber, deep red hue and quickly dissipating, one-finger white head.

Aroma is a mix of banana, bubblegum, clove, and generic Belgian yeast fruitiness. Maybe a touch of red berry in there, as well.

Taste generally matches the nose, with the Belgian yeast again dominating. The bubblegum is especially strong, with the clove poking in from time to time.

Mouthfeel is medium with moderate carbonation. Bitterness is on the medium-high end, which clashes at times.

Overall, Love Knife is a classic Short's experiment with clashing styles that just doesn't pan out. If bitterness was toned down or hop aroma and taste was ramped up, this beer would likely work better.

Poured into a tulip it has a fluffy off white slight yellow head of an inch and a quarter with a hazy ruby brown body (leaves a nice amount of very white lacing). Smell is grapefruit, citrus, earth, Belgian yeast esters, lots of tropical fruit, mango, banana, slight clove, tons of bubblegum, and some biscuit malt in the background. Taste is lots of banana, bubblegum, clove at the end, some citrus, nice amount of biscuit malt, and some slight floral. Mouth feel is moderate same as body and carbonation. A very Belgian-y pale ale that has a ton of fruit-y banana bubblegum flavor, it's not bad, but it definitely is too much.

Has the fruity aromas of a Belgian with banana and strawberry being prominent. The taste gives you characteristics of an Amber Ale with caramel malts and earthy hops on the backend. Another unique offering from Shorts just not sure if I am crazy about this hybrid style.
