Had the pleasure of stopping by Short's twice in a three day period. The beer is as phenomenal as expected, not only is the brew experimental, flavorful, and delicious, but there also is a large amount of beer (around 24 beers) on tap. Highlights include AwwJeaahhh (double huma), Dubbel Down, Kiwi Destroy Mission, Cerveza de Julie, Captain Fantasy and the chocolate wheat.

The quality is indisputable, the atmosphere is great, although the brewery was much busier than the last time I visited. The service is great, although there isn't much service required with the way the brewpub works (you can only order at the bar).

We had pizzas, which were delicious and enormous! Visiting Short's is a treat, definitely one of my top five brewery trips!

Atmosphere-This brewery is located in the quaint sleepy town of bellaire is a real gem. The brewery is located in an old brick building. The brew pub has hardwood floors with a small stage in the back for live band performances. Plenty of seating room with lots of tables, some of the artwork are blown up pictures of some of their beer labels. Only knock is that there is not much seating available at the bar. Not overly crowded but it does get busy at times. Friendly staff and patrons.

Quality/selection- there are over 20 beers on tap. All of there year round line up is available along with many of their seasonals and several one offs. I always get a sampler just so that I can try a greater variety of their beer. Some of the beers that I have tried here are sweet taters, Wowee Zowee, The Duke, and the Woodmaster. The woodmaster and Wowee Zowee were both awesome. Every beer I have had from them has been of at least a mid B to a high A in quality. No bad beers here.

Service- The service is not to bad but could be better. When you know what beer you want you walk up to the counter and let them know what you want and then they will bring it to you. The wait time from ordering your food to receiving it is reasonable.

Food- The sandwiches here are incredible! My wife hates sandwiches but even she raves about how good the food is here. All the ingredients are extremely fresh and their is even a kids menu if you decide to bring the kids along.

Overall, this is one of my favorite breweries to visit and may be my favorite. The quality of everything is amazing, the beer and food are both top notch. It is laid back enough that you could bring your kids with you but still has enough of a bar feel to it that you don't feel uncomfortable drinking in front of families. Highly recommend this to anyone in the Traverse City area.

The brewpub in Bellaire is a real treat for any Short's enthusiast. There are two sections - one with the main bar, and another larger area with a stage for live entertainment and another bar in the back. Family friendly atmosphere, at least on the Sunday that I visited. There were 21 beers on tap if I counted correctly. Had 2 flights to cover the styles we like and that were brewpub only offerings. First flight was Superfluid DIPA, In the Wheat of Passion (passionfruit wheat), The Village Reserve (CA Common), Schnozzleberry Griffin (oolong tea/blackberry wheat), and Chatterbox Pale. All were exceptional but the two wheats and Superfluid were definitive favorites for us. Second flight was another Superfluid, Cinnabilly (cinnamon doppelbock), Lession Siberator (sessionable Liberator, and definitely the tastiest session beer I've ever had - only 3.7%!!!), Soft Parade, PB & Banana Wheat. Again, you couldn't go wrong with any of them. My fiancee had the Puerto Rican Power and I had a pizza. My pizza was good, and my fiancee said hers was one of the best chicken quesadillas she's ever had.

If you're in Northern MI, you MUST make the drive to Bellaire and visit the brewpub. You will not be disappointed. Out of the 23 Michigan breweries I've visited, this is easily top 2.

My wife and I have gone to Short's once or twice a year over the last three years and have had a great experience every time. There are always a few surprises on the tap list that are worth trying, and the old standbys are great, too (for me, these are Pandemonium, Humalupalicious and some others). The food is great, too. We've usually had the pizzas and an appetizer or two, and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is just what you would want from a brewpub in northern michigan--laid back with great music and friendly people. It was a great move to add another bar so that there's now one in each of the two main rooms within the place. To sum up--we recommend this place to anyone who is gonna be up that way. You won't be disappointed!

Atmosphere - Located in "downtown" Bellaire, MI Short's Brewery is a great place to stop for lunch or spend the evening hanging out with friends. There are two halves to the brewpub with each side featuring its own bar. Live music is a staple at Short's.

Quality - The beer is top-notch. Why else would you find it in grocery stores state wide? My wife and I both love the Bellaire Brown but that is only one of several excellent choices. Short's is always putting out something new. The bloody mary beer wasn't my favorite but it goes a long way in showing how innovative the crew there is.

Service - Take a table and figure out what you want to try. Order at the bar and enjoy a beer while you wait a few minutes for your meal. The staff always makes sure I never have an empty glass on the table. Everyone is friendly and really wants to make sure you have a great experience.

Selection - I have no idea how many beers they have on tap, but I haven't run out of choices yet. From the typical browns to IPA's to stouts and the eccentric stuff, there is always something good on tap.

Food - Great stuff! Mainly sandwiches and appetizers.

Value - I have never emptied my wallet here despite my best efforts to try. Everything is rather reasonably priced.

They have 20+ unique brews on tap, and a few unique beers you cant get in stores down in SE michigan.. even from the Beer Baron without a special order etc. Which was cool to see the selection at the Pub.

The service is more like a deli, order yourself and grab and go for beer. They bring the food out to you which is awesome. Went on a sat. and then a sun. evening. Excellent atmosphere! Loved every minute of it.. wish it was closer to home.

The beer was super fresh and the prices were more than fair! Will most definitely go back every summer.. a MUST see and experience place.

*** We ended up going back again and staying a night at the hotel across the street (Stone Waters Inn) just to hang out at the brewery again and spend a relaxing evening up north.

They had live music scheduled the ENTIRE weekend according to their board.. Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun.

The band was pretty good, even though Im not much of a bluegrass fan, it was a change of pace and a great atmosphere.

The line at the counter to order can become extremely long, so it helps to keep an eye on it and go when the line dies down. Going on 3 different nights.. a thursday.. then a saturday and even sunday night.. this place was PACKED pretty much all the time..which is AWESOME. Its great to see a company that worked hard and invented such quality brews and a unique image have such success!

If your from Michigan you absolutely MUST visit the Pub in Bellaire, Top notch experience every time!

update 7.31.13

They added a 2nd bar which really cuts down the lines! Love this place still.. we actually set a vacation every year to go here for a night and drink at shorts!! We stay at the hotel across the street! Excellent !

Driving to the place felt like we were heading to the middle of nowhere. Coming from Traverse City we had to go around a big lake making 30 miles as the crow flies about 50 miles. But it was worth it. My wife and I enjoyed our time there.

It's got a cozy atmosphere and a large tap list. We started out with a sampler of five beers. I wanted to try the Strawberry Short Cake, but didn't really want a pint. It was very well done, but the sampler was more than enough for me. The other beers on the sampler were all good and I ordered a pint of the ControvsiAle. Great beer! I bought a sixer of that to take home.

The next time you're in the middle of nowhere, stop by!

Once again, Short's has been one of those stops in the L.P. that I wasn't sure when or how I would make it there, but I finally did on my recent L.P. cruise to Bells for Eccentric Day and Dark Horse for the 4 Elf Party.

I stopped at Short's in Bellaire for one reason, and one reason only. BA Wizard. This beast as eluded me for decades, if not centuries!

I arrived around 5:30 on a Thursday afternoon, and there was one table of younger (what appeared to be locals) occupying one table, and a few other locals at the bar who were very friendly. We chatted about beer, Three Floyds, Bells, Dark Horse, Jolly Pumpkin, a good beer geek experience. The bar side is rather small, but comfortable and inviting. A really nice north woods feel to it, almost rustic, yet modern. Great looking place. The other side is sort of the restaurant/stage area. Very impressive. The ramp is beautiful, make sure to look down if you check out the other side when you're there! Very awesome.

I ordered the Mac n Cheese, which was very good. The BA Wizard was fantastic, everything I had hoped it would be. A nice barrel character, nice raisin character, dried fruit, nice malt balance. Wonderful brew. Worth the drive up to Bellaire if you are in the TC area, or even in if you have to go out of your way form I-75 or anywhere north of GR. Great stop. Extra points for Ween themed menu items! Taaaake me some other land!

This place is absolutely great. I wish this was my local watering hole. The people are great, the brewpub itself is warm and inviting, and the selection is second to none. Short's offers beer flights, bottles to go, and they fill growlers as well. The food is great, and I believe they have atleast 20 taps of all Short's beers at all times. I only wish I lived closer...I would frequent this place a lot of it were possible. On my latest trip here they had all their winter stouts on tap. Amazing. Best beer had on my trip by far...the Bourbon Wizard was World Class. Thank you Short's!

I stand by my statement that Michigan has outstanding breweries. Short's is no different. A little off the beaten path, but definately worth the trip. My girlfriend and I were on vacation in Traverse City and took the 45 minute drive to visit Short's.

We walked in around 4:00 on a Thursday afternoon and it was pretty empty. They have a walk up counter for you to place your order. I went up planning to order my usual Huma Lupa, but the bartender offered up some samples (free) of other beers she thought I might like. One of them was Kind Ale which I thought was a phenomanal beer. I ordered a pint of that while I perused the other options. Next was a sampler including Huma Bourbon, key lime, and some other ones. Short's is never shy about trying unique beers. not all of them hit, but more often than not, I like what they do.

If you are looking for a large menu, don't. They are limited to sandwhiches, salads, and pizza. I had a sandhwhich and it was very good. Lets face it come here for the beer.

The service was first rate. From the knowledgeable and very friendly bartenders, to the attentive busstaff who was always around to clean up the table, to the manager who took us through for a tour of the brewery. We felt welcome.

The prices are also very reasonable with most pints available for $3. A little more for premium pours.

We left as the brewery got pretty busy towards the evening hours. I left with a full belly, drank some very good beers, and had a great time. Even left with t-shirts and a few 6 packs for home.

I was very impressed on all fronts.

Got to spend a whole, enjoyable afternoon here last week. Stayed at the hotel across the street. Not driving is a good idea! The tap room is a nice airy room bustling with customers. I really didn't like the get-up-and-get-your-own-beer service scheme. That always ends up being chaotic, so at the earliest opportunity we got some bar seats. Service wasn't much better there because it was so busy.

Anyway, the beers were very interesting both good and bad. Some decent standard pales and Octoberfests, some very odd sour/fruity beers. Had the Whiskey Sour (limes and barrel aging were an interesting combo), a really good imperial porter (smoky and deep chocolate), Nicie Spicie is a mind-bending snappy peppery ginger-ish beer. I am, however, always a little paranoid about odd sour tastes in beer that could indicate poor fermentation, but what the heck do I know about infection? Don't over-interpret that because I think they have a really good thing here.

Food: Great salad, bad pizza. Other food looked good though.

This is really off the beaten path, so you had better mean it if you're looking for good beer "up north".

The forums told me a stop at Short's is a necessatiy. Glad I made the trip. The location and building is what I picture a brewpub should look like. A recent renovation maintained the atmosphere while introducing modern anminities. Orders are placed at the bar and the service is brisk. It appeared to back up a little when more than a few people want something. Got the slip to order my sampler and sat at the bar and made my choices of the 20 possible options. I never particularly cared for the bottled Short's beer, but everything I had at the brewpub was good to outstanding. Even Whiskey Sour was good. I ordered a club sandwich which was also very good. Pretty much sandwiches is the only thing on the menu but there are many options.

This is the model for brewpubs in my opinion. Great building, good food and beer that that will draw people from far away. Also picked up a 6-pack to-go. A nice drive out of the way. Some nice roads and natural beauty.

went yesterday. awesome brewery!

A- inside an old hardware store. had a clean rustic small town but open woody feel to it. love how you have to order up at the bar for whatever.

Q- beer and food were delicious. no hair in food and beer seemed spot on.

S- all the staff were as friendly as a hippy at bonnaroo.

S- they have a huge chalkboard behind the bar explaining all the beers for patrons. they also give you a little sheet if you get a table.

F- pizza, sanwiches, salads, and starters.. only a crotch would complain. we got the spinach artichoke dip for a starter which i found to be quite good. i hate to state that was my first time eating spinach artichoke dip. then we split the mutilated lips pizza which was quite good.

V- everything seemed reasonable and their beer prices are awesome.

Overall- we drove an hour and a half away from our vacation spot to go there and i would walk that today if i didn't get 3 growlers. no one seemed crotchety their. there were bikers, families, republicans, and gays all drinking good beer and being merry. ok i made alil of that up but i did seem like a cool place where anyone and everyone could hangout.

In the middle of nowhere Michigan but what a great pub.

You can pick 5 beers to be on your sampler and they easily have 10-15 beers on tap. I did two rounds of samplers and still had more to choose from.

You can buy growlers or six packs right at the counter.

Very informal eating as you step up to the counter and place your order.

My service has always been quick and the waiter/waitresses have always been attentive.

It's one of my "must stops" whenever I visit Michigan. Great place. Even better beers.

Strongly recommended.

I always look forward to stopping here when I'm in the area. You never know what crazy beers will be on tap. Located in an old hardware store, the pub looks laid back outside as well as inside. The menu is not too extensive, but what they offer is done well. The wait staff seem friendly and knowledgable about the beer offerings. Just a nice casual place to have a nice lunch with some great beer. They usally have a wide variety of beer styles so finding one just perfect for you is not hard. This is a place where if they only served bread, I would still come here. It is all about the beer for me.

I love Short's, I will say that right off the get-go. I have family in the Grayling area, so I hit Short's alot. I always feel like I am at home when I go into Short's. Everyone is freindly, it is a very eclectic laid out brewpub and always a 'homey' feeling.

Their taplist is always off the charts. They have an amazing amount of different brews on tap, and even if I don't like 80% of them that still leaves me 5-6 I love. Prices are extremely reasonable and I always feel like I am paying a fair price. They also have a lot of carry-out beer that usually breaks my credit card.

The food is not an afterthought at all, and they really deliver on it. My wife is crazy about pizzas and she pretty much gets one everytime there. I like to try something new each time as they always are changing stuff up at Short's.

This place is a must visit when you're in northern Michigan. The Bellaire area itself is great as-is and Short's just adds to the beauty of it.

Made the drive to Short's from Traverse City while on vacation on Lake Leelanau. Bellaire is a sleepy, out of the way town with alot of character, but Short's is the highlight by far.

Approx. 20 beers on tap, some of their mainstream, but alot of their one-offs as well.

A flight of 5 beers ran $8.75 for 5 6oz. pours, a great way to taste the lot and not be destroyed. We had 2 flights to try all of the beers we were interested in. My personal favorite was the India Spruce Pilsner, while my fiance preferred The Magician.

We were only stopping in for a few beers and a snack, so we really didn't get to try the food, but the menu was very appealing.

Alot of diehard Short's fans know that they are huge fans of the band Ween. Their menu displays this almost infatuation with them. The menu is designed to look like an record jacket. All of the food is named after Ween songs, and some of the descriptions include lyrics as well, a nice kitchy touch, but fits in with the overall environment.

The only downfall to the entire time there was the service. When we got in, around 2:30pm, the bar was pretty empty. There were only 2 people sitting at the bar besides us, yet we waited almost 15 minutes to be greeted, then another 10 minutes to get our first drinks. When we decided on another round, we waited 10 more minutes to get our order taken, then it took a committee of 4 people to decide who would actually pour the beers.

I will definitely be back next time I'm up in this part of the country, its well worth the drive.

I went to Short's not too long ago for the first time. I walk in and it is nice and comfy. I walk around to take a look at the place. A really neat place with tables and chairs in most of the place, but they also and couches and living room style chair with a coffee table in the bar lounge. They also had living room style chairs in the lobby where the entertainment stage is. I have not seen any bands play there, but heard they have good music there. It was also cool that they had a large chalkboard telling about the 20 beers they had on tap. The service was good and the employees are very friendly. They have a very good selection of beers and you can try a sampler plate of five beers in 5oz. glasses. The prices for what you get is rather reasonable for the size they give. Most beers are $3 for a 14oz. draft and $4.50 for the larger size. After trying the sampler, I ordered my two favorites from the sampler. The Chocolate Wheat and Cornholio were really good and satisfied me very much. I did not try the food, but when I do try it I will update this review. I had a very good time there and if I could have stayed longer I would have but I got a ride to Short's and had to go when the driver wanted to go. I do highly recommend going to Short's. You will enjoy your experience there and will not be disappointed. Also it was my first time at Shorts.

Living only two hours away it should not have taken me two years to visit this place but it did. Went there on a family vacation to the Traverse City area. I got there close to 5:00 P.M. on a Thursday with my in laws, wife, and our two children, ages 6 & 2 at the time. I was a little worried about bringing in the kids but the atmosphere is very family friendly. In fact after we sat down at least three other families with young kids came in. There were even a couple young teenage boys there enjoying a deli sandwich and a bottle of hand crafted root beer.

You seat yourself and have to go up to the counter to place an order, which is okay unless there is seven or more people in line to order something. There just isn't enough room at the counter to handle a rush of people. So no waitress to take your order from the table all orders are taken ant the counter. That is my only gripe. Everything else is perfect. Two beers and a growler for $22 is a very good deal for me.

If you ever visit be sure to GET THE FLIGHT! Five decent sized samplers for one low price. Still kicking myself over not seeing that till it was too late!

Alright i live about 30 minutes from here this is my third time visiting the brew pub and i realized today as i was stuffing my face with pizza and beer that i had not yet done a review of the pub, So here it is.

The remodel came out very nice i dont think that i see a big difference on the size of the place but it still looks nice. Great live band in there. it took us around 45 minutes to finally get a seat.

The Quality is always top notch

Service was excellent, just wish that they had waiters and waitresses that came to you table and took you order.

Selection was superb but they have like 20 taps.

Food was not bad.

I would say the prices were about right
1 large pizza
5 samples of beer and one 20oz
plus a appetizer (chorizo queso) all for 41.00 and that includes a tip

Plus i picked up some super beers that im excited to try

Nice, Northern Michigan feel in this 100+ year old converted hardware store. Exposed brick and homey mismatched tables and chairs.

Food and beer were both good, albeit the food menu is limited mainly to appetizers, sandwiches and pizza. The chorizo queso and pizza we had were both above average.

All orders are taken at the bar, which is fairly efficient. The staff was friendly and our food was delivered promptly.

There about 20 taps with a wide arrangement of styles. We tried 11 sample sizes and even found one (Agave Peach Wheat) that my non beer drinking wife enjoyed enough to order a pint.

Well worth the drive out of the way to make a visit.

I like this place, I like the relax feel of it. When ever I am visiting my family in the area I always make sure to go to Short's about 2-3 times. They always have a great variety of their own beer on tap. The prices seem really fair to me (of course I am use to San Diego prices).

There is no table service, but the bartenders bring you your food. The staff is always very friendly.

There are two main rooms, the bar, and the stage area. I like that bar area more, though it is always crowded. The stage area is nice, but it is very loud, and not even when a band is playing. All of the conversations carry and it get really noisy.

As a brew pub they have a great amount of taps and great variety. The mug club is a great deal if you are a local. I got to use it because the place I was staying had some mugs.

Overall it is good. Nothing ground breaking but nice. It is typical bar food (pizza, sandwiches, mac-n-cheese) done a little special.

Short's brewpub has a very nice worn in sort of atmosphere that really fits the Northern Michigan setting. Plenty of wood and a lodge like decor go well with the small town of Bellaire where it resides. Parking is on the street only, but I have never had trouble getting a spot more than a brief walk from the building.

It is divided into two sections, a bar area with a long wooden bar and limited high top seating and a music area that has lots of folding tables that make me feel like I am at a church or municipal building. I actually like that it is a simple and no nonsense sort of place and they keep it clean and tidy. My only real complaint is that any time I have been here and there is music going on that quality is pretty damn bad. I realize they want to get local "artists" in here, but it seems like any wannabe with a guitar can get on stage.

The quality of the beers is of course exceptional. Short's is one of those places that has become known for pushing the boundaries with beers like Key Lime Pie and Uber Goober, but they also do more classic styles extremely well. Every beer I have ever had from Short's is better on tap and so for those of you thinking of taking a road trip, I have to say that it will totally be worth it. They also tend to have plenty of one-offs and limited brews on tap.

I have never had a problem with the service at Short's, but must advise that it is a little bit different than most places, especially places out east. All ordering is done at the bar. They bring out food and samplers to you, but you must go up to order and pay your tab. I actually think this works fairly well and they keep the line moving, but I know some people have an issue with not having a server.

The food is also quite high quality with an array of amazing sandwiches that are all named after Ween songs. They tend to change up the menu a lot, which is nice for people that frequent the pub and I would say they have a broad enough assortment to please most people. Apps are also quite good and while I was very disappointed with the pizza, a lot of people seem to really like it.

Overall Short's is a fantastic brewpub and the absolute best place to try their beers. I feel fortunate that it is only an afternoon or evening trip away and I am wishing I could make the trip there right now while writing this review. If you did not need an excuse to come up to our beautiful corner of the lower peninsula before, Short's just might be the reason you were looking for. Highly recommended.

What great brewpub!! To my mind, they have got it all going on here- a nice, laid back atmosphere with great decor, a genuinely friendly and cheerful staff, and an amazing selection of outstanding brews.

From beers like their Pineapple Pilsner, Turtle Stout, and Raisin Apollo, I was bedazzled by the incredible range of flavors to be experienced under one roof. So much so, that i bought a sixer of the Woodmaster (one of the few ones i havent had yet), plus a t-shirt, and came back the following day for a growler of Uber Guber to savor back home as well. I was also impressed (but not surprised) by the number of people who were also enjoying themselves on a Sunday evening (near closing time, at that!).

If you live anywhere in Michigan (or anywhere, for that matter), i would highly recommend that you wow yourself with a visit to this fantastic brewpub. I know if i lived closer, i'd practically live there :) Massive props go out to Brian for the tour and humbling generosity!!!
