Short's was the brewery that opened my eyes to what microbrews could be, and the annual visit to the taproom is always a pleasure, even more so now that they've expanded. It's one thing to have their beers from the bottle, it's another to have a fresh Soft Parade alongside Tears for Eddie (pretzel sticks alongside several different dips that feature their brews) or one of Short's awesome pizzas. The taplist is usually ten to twelve deep, including regulars, seasonals, and limited releases. You'll also find a couple of ciders on the list as well. The menu features smoked meats and cheese plates, soups, sandwiches, pizzas, and mac n cheese. Get a bowl of the mac n cheese to share, there's a daily special version and each one I've had has impressed. Same for the pizzas.

What great brewpub!! To my mind, they have got it all going on here- a nice, laid back atmosphere with great decor, a genuinely friendly and cheerful staff, and an amazing selection of outstanding brews.

From beers like their Pineapple Pilsner, Turtle Stout, and Raisin Apollo, I was bedazzled by the incredible range of flavors to be experienced under one roof. So much so, that i bought a sixer of the Woodmaster (one of the few ones i havent had yet), plus a t-shirt, and came back the following day for a growler of Uber Guber to savor back home as well. I was also impressed (but not surprised) by the number of people who were also enjoying themselves on a Sunday evening (near closing time, at that!).

If you live anywhere in Michigan (or anywhere, for that matter), i would highly recommend that you wow yourself with a visit to this fantastic brewpub. I know if i lived closer, i'd practically live there :) Massive props go out to Brian for the tour and humbling generosity!!!

"May the Short's be with you!"

Went there for the first time and it was really nice. I really like their Autumn Ale, Space Rock, Strawberry Shortcake, lager, Huma, Anniversary Ale, Soft Parade...those are my favorites that I can remember right now.

They have 20+ unique brews on tap, and a few unique beers you cant get in stores down in SE michigan.. even from the Beer Baron without a special order etc. Which was cool to see the selection at the Pub.

The service is more like a deli, order yourself and grab and go for beer. They bring the food out to you which is awesome. Went on a sat. and then a sun. evening. Excellent atmosphere! Loved every minute of it.. wish it was closer to home.

The beer was super fresh and the prices were more than fair! Will most definitely go back every summer.. a MUST see and experience place.

*** We ended up going back again and staying a night at the hotel across the street (Stone Waters Inn) just to hang out at the brewery again and spend a relaxing evening up north.

They had live music scheduled the ENTIRE weekend according to their board.. Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun.

The band was pretty good, even though Im not much of a bluegrass fan, it was a change of pace and a great atmosphere.

The line at the counter to order can become extremely long, so it helps to keep an eye on it and go when the line dies down. Going on 3 different nights.. a thursday.. then a saturday and even sunday night.. this place was PACKED pretty much all the time..which is AWESOME. Its great to see a company that worked hard and invented such quality brews and a unique image have such success!

If your from Michigan you absolutely MUST visit the Pub in Bellaire, Top notch experience every time!

update 7.31.13

They added a 2nd bar which really cuts down the lines! Love this place still.. we actually set a vacation every year to go here for a night and drink at shorts!! We stay at the hotel across the street! Excellent !

Stopped in on a summer evening. Heard many great things about Shorts and hoped it was worth it, as it was quite an adventure getting there. Place had a nice old town feel, nothing artsy but had the character of an older brewpub. Did a flight of beers and was impressed by the offerings, then proceeded to buy one each of all the bombers and one sixer each of all the beers I had not gotten yet down state. Considering, service was great, and considering the boldness of the brewery selection would be almost impossible to not be great. I would visit again and recommend to a friend. Perfect Score!

Quality: shorts is known for their tasty experimental beers. they have a wide variety of these great experimental beers and a some good true to style beers as well.

Service: no problems. the bartender was nice and friendly. gave me tastes of beers without a problem and were helpful

Selection: almost 20 beers on tap. i had 3 and tried a lot more. most were good, some were okay and a few were great

Food: great food and a kinda unique menu. very tasty though

Overall: shorts is an extremely unique place, everything there is their own and it is all just wonderful. I wish this place wasn't so far out of the way so i could go more often

Cool old hardware store in a small town in northern Michigan. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Gets busy in the summer but plenty of seating. Live music on weekends. Great beers on tap and even some specialty bottles available only there to try.

On vacation in upper Michigan, so where does one go for their birthday...Short's Brew Pub of course. The beer here is world class. the Huma Lupa Ipa, is one of the best IPA's I've ever had. Just an oustanding selection of original beers. The service was top notch as well. The waitress actualy took our names and remembered them the entire time, even though she had to have been waiting on 20 other guests. The food, although deli-style, and limited on the menu, was great. My wife thought their spinach dip was the best she's ever had. We left just before the live music began, but all in all just an extra special B-day present from the wife. If you are anywhere close to this place, you MUST go, fantastic! Skal.

My husband and I went to Short's for the second time recently and it was wonderful. We sampled all the beers - Soft Parade and Huma Lupa were the tops but they also had some interesting mixes in their Pistachio Cream and Key Lime Pie (a bit too sweet). The food was delicious and service great - we loved the honey mustard sauce and our server brought us some to take home with no charge. We were there in the early afternoon for lunch, so the atmosphere was fairly quiet but I imagine it's a bit louder/exciting when a band is performing.

Overall, the beer was great, the service was great and the food was great which makes this one of my favorite breweries in the state.

I stand by my statement that Michigan has outstanding breweries. Short's is no different. A little off the beaten path, but definately worth the trip. My girlfriend and I were on vacation in Traverse City and took the 45 minute drive to visit Short's.

We walked in around 4:00 on a Thursday afternoon and it was pretty empty. They have a walk up counter for you to place your order. I went up planning to order my usual Huma Lupa, but the bartender offered up some samples (free) of other beers she thought I might like. One of them was Kind Ale which I thought was a phenomanal beer. I ordered a pint of that while I perused the other options. Next was a sampler including Huma Bourbon, key lime, and some other ones. Short's is never shy about trying unique beers. not all of them hit, but more often than not, I like what they do.

If you are looking for a large menu, don't. They are limited to sandwhiches, salads, and pizza. I had a sandhwhich and it was very good. Lets face it come here for the beer.

The service was first rate. From the knowledgeable and very friendly bartenders, to the attentive busstaff who was always around to clean up the table, to the manager who took us through for a tour of the brewery. We felt welcome.

The prices are also very reasonable with most pints available for $3. A little more for premium pours.

We left as the brewery got pretty busy towards the evening hours. I left with a full belly, drank some very good beers, and had a great time. Even left with t-shirts and a few 6 packs for home.

I was very impressed on all fronts.

This is the coolest brewery I’ve visited in a long time. Worth the detour through Michigan’s back country roads. The place itself is spacious, with two bars pouring their beers. I ordered a few taster flights and took a growler home. No food so I can’t comment on that. The staff was across the board as friendly and welcoming as I would expect. Although my visit was for a special occasion I sure hope that I can repeat it someday.

About unique as you can get. It is converted out of an old hardware store and most of the brewery (including the stunning bar) is handcrafted. In putting this place together they managed to blend class with an eclectic mix of furniture and decorating that creates a unique atmosphere and appearance.

There were a lot of beers on tap and they also had about 20 different beers in bottles available. The most notable was a set of 13 Imperial beers with varying degrees of craziness including Peaches and Cream and a Bloody Mary Beer.

The food menu seemed a little uninviting as I am a plain eater. That said everything I tried was exceptional. I especially liked the Artichoke Pesto Dip, the Pizzas and the soups. I belive they are in transition a little right now and are expanding the kitchens out later in the year.

The beers are great and what a variety. There are the favorite IPA's of course but then a varying mix of all sorts of beers. A good one was the Soft Parade which was a fruity beer that finished a little dry like champagne. There was no wine or liqour which was a small problem with some people in the party although everyone found something they liked.

The brewery is somewhat divided into two halves. The pub side and the stage. The stage side is raised on a beautiful stone stage that gives great accoustics throughout the building. There seems to be live bands most weekends and a lot of weeknights in the summer.

A community feel that sucked out my stress out of me. I want to be there now!

absolutely outstanding. phenominal beers that are way too original for their own good. i could easily spend 500+ dollars here, buying all of the beers in the imperial series and their anniversary ales. the selection of beers was excellent, served at a perfect temperature. the atmosphere is outstanding, with odd regalia adorning the walls and the separate area with a mini stage (no live music when i went). i cant praise the beer enough, honestly, my favorite brewery. just outstanding. thanks to the purchase of the woodmaster from the imperial series, i know that the wood walls, ceiling, floors, tables, etc. inside was crafted by bill sohn. very woodsy feel to the place. absolutely amazing. even when my brother ordered 2 of every beer in the imperial series, the bartender was quick to run and get them for us. just a great place. must visit.

Stopped by on a Sunday evening while on the way home from Sleeping Bear Dunes (12 miles or so off the highway and in the middle of nowhere). Stopping by was a good decision.

Very relaxed atmosphere. Clean and simple and well-kept. No acoustic jam as advertised. Small, mellow Sunday night crowd.

I was somewhat disappointed, but not surprised that Short's Imperial line of ales (from their anniversary party in June) was no longer available. Alas, I had already had Soft Parade (aka Ye Olde Leg Spreader) the night before (@ City Park Grill in Petoskey) and a keg of Pontius Road Pilsener at my wedding the weekend previous, so I opted for a Hangin' Franks and then a Chocolate Wheat.

Hangin' Franks, I am told, is a contract beer that is only sold at City Park grill and Short's proper. I would have purchased a growler of it otherwise. Dubbed a stong American pale, it seemed to be a member of the IPA clan. It is a flawless beverage, and were it available in the bottle where I live, it would be one of my go-to ales.

The Chocolate Wheat was an exotic delight. Coffee-like, roasty, yet medium bodied; it would make a very nice dessert beer, though I didn't eat there.

The staff was chill and friendly, but not in-your-face, and definitely not uppity. And though they're not necessarily quick to move in the name of service, they were closing up shop by 10:00 pm as we sipped on dregs. All the same, we needed to be on our way by that time.

It was an excellent experience and well worth the detour. I'll definitely go back for a longer stay the next time.

(Note: There isn't much in the way of lodging in Bellaire and that could present a problem if one spends too much time in Short's tap room. Consider making arrangements ahead of time.)

With no reservations, I would rank Short's alongside Founder's and Kuehnenn as the Happy Triad of Michigan breweries. Highly recommended.

Short's is brewery that is not afraid to take a risk. You will alway find interesting beers to choose from and they are almost alway on point. The staff is always extremely friendly and helpful.
Whether it's to fill some growlers or get a bite to eat stoping at shorts when I'm in Bellaire is alway a great experience.

Wow! Quite a gem nestled in Michigan's great wet North.
Very cool place in the heart of downtown Bellaire. Nice new, clean feel, with some interesting artwork on the walls and old carseats for non-bar seating.
Oh my, are their beer ever good. I tried the Chocolate Wheat, Pale Ale, Nicie Spicie and took a growler of the huma-lupa licious. All were solid and many were different. The locals are friendly and the staff are friendlier. I was quite impressed.
Selection? The best brewpub selection I have seen. (In my limited experience. But I have yet to go to Kunnhenn's or Kraftbrau in MI.)
Great deli sandwich, fit nicely with the overall atmosphere.
Michiganders, get here immediately. Everyone else, be jealous of us.

I love Short's, I will say that right off the get-go. I have family in the Grayling area, so I hit Short's alot. I always feel like I am at home when I go into Short's. Everyone is freindly, it is a very eclectic laid out brewpub and always a 'homey' feeling.

Their taplist is always off the charts. They have an amazing amount of different brews on tap, and even if I don't like 80% of them that still leaves me 5-6 I love. Prices are extremely reasonable and I always feel like I am paying a fair price. They also have a lot of carry-out beer that usually breaks my credit card.

The food is not an afterthought at all, and they really deliver on it. My wife is crazy about pizzas and she pretty much gets one everytime there. I like to try something new each time as they always are changing stuff up at Short's.

This place is a must visit when you're in northern Michigan. The Bellaire area itself is great as-is and Short's just adds to the beauty of it.

I've been to Short's quite a bit over the last 3 plus years they've been open.

I usually stop in here at least once every time I'm up north at my mom's lake cottage on Intermediate Lake. Me and HellsBells24 were up last weekend taking all the toys and docks out of the water for the winter. I stopped in here to pickup my GABF sponsor card (dollar pints for a year – Hell Ya) and t-shirt and have a few beers. (THANKS AGAIN JASON AND TODD! for the hookup)

Surprisingly I haven’t rated Short’s yet, but I figured this would be a good time.

Atmosphere: This is located in an old hardware store in downtown Bellaire. The interior is very cool. It kind of reminds me of Bell’s Eccentric café with the unique art and set-up. The walls of exposed old bricks have some interesting painting and other art. The handmade wood bar is pretty cool too as are the various types of seats throughout the place (old barrels, car benches, leather mis-matched couches and chairs). There are two separate sides (one with the bar and some seating and the other with the stage and some more different seating). During this visit, we sat near the stage (We didn’t really have a choice since it was packed). Definitely a cool and relaxed atmosphere.

Quality: Everything here is done top-notch. From the expertly crafted beers to the unique and good ass food, you won’t feel like you just wasted your time and money here. Everything is homemade and it shows.

Service: The service here is usually very good. It was very busy on Saturday (no open seat in the whole place), and the wait for beers was pretty quick. All the staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the food and beers. They are always giving non-locals help picking out something good. If you sit at the bar or in the bar area, they are always willing to give out samples before you buy a pint.

Selection: They have by far the best selection I’ve seen at a brewpub, period. It’s actually quite amazing that a small brewpub in northern MI can offer so many tasty, unique, and damn good beers at one time. First they offer the 13 Imperial Beers for either takeout or to enjoy at the pub. These are not cheap ($15 - $22.50 per 750 ml), but they are worth it if you think about the quality and amount of ingredients and time it took to brew, age, and bottle these. I’ve had the Carob Stout, Soft Parade, Black Cherry Porter, and Publican Porter and they’ve all been excellent. I hope to have the others soon. They also offered the 4 Anniversary IPA’s (Part One – 20% + triple IPA, Part Deux – regular barrel aged, Part Deux – barrel aged - double dry hopped, and Part Deux – barrel aged w/ grapefruit for 9 months). These 12oz goodies ($7 - $9) are also available to consume there or at home. I’ve had all these too, and these are also good with the grapefruit part deux being extraordinary. We had one of these during this trip. For the beers on tap, there are usually about 10 – 15 regular beers ($4.50 for 20 oz pint) and 4 or so premium beers ($6.00 for 14oz tulip) on tap at a time, which was the case today too. We had the Bellaire Brown, Huma Luma IPA, and Chocolate Wheat Stout this time. Other beers that I’ve really enjoyed before that were on tap this time were the Black Cherry Porter, Pandemonium Pale Ale, and Autumn Ale. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the Stellar Ale or Cup a Joe Crème Stout this time, but these are damn good too. They also fill growlers to go for about $12 for the growler and fill. We got a Chocolate Wheat to go.

Food: We didn’t eat here this time (we went to LuLu’s Bistro a few doors down – definitely worth checking out if in the area – it’s one of the best restaurants in northern MI – IMO), but I’ve had most of the stuff on the menu. They have some unique and good sandwiches and pizza’s. Everything is homemade and usually have some different combinations that you don’t usually see at brewpubs.

Value: You definitely get what you pay for. Some of the items are a little pricey, but for what you get, you don’t feel like you’ve been ripped off and you’ll be satisfied. If you plan on going here often, the mug club is a good idea. The mug club mug is about 32oz and they’ll fill it with the regular beer for $3.00 or $3.50 and $6.00 for the premium beers.

Overall: This is one of favorite brewpub overall if you factor in atmosphere, selection, quality, food, and most importantly beers. I’ve been to a few that have had better beer and food, but not all in one. This is worth a few hour detour to come enjoy some of the most unique and carefully crafted beers in the country. I’m very lucky my mom has a lake cottage a few miles from here, so I can have Short’s beers pretty much whenever I want. If you get a chance, stop in, you will not be disappointed.

went yesterday. awesome brewery!

A- inside an old hardware store. had a clean rustic small town but open woody feel to it. love how you have to order up at the bar for whatever.

Q- beer and food were delicious. no hair in food and beer seemed spot on.

S- all the staff were as friendly as a hippy at bonnaroo.

S- they have a huge chalkboard behind the bar explaining all the beers for patrons. they also give you a little sheet if you get a table.

F- pizza, sanwiches, salads, and starters.. only a crotch would complain. we got the spinach artichoke dip for a starter which i found to be quite good. i hate to state that was my first time eating spinach artichoke dip. then we split the mutilated lips pizza which was quite good.

V- everything seemed reasonable and their beer prices are awesome.

Overall- we drove an hour and a half away from our vacation spot to go there and i would walk that today if i didn't get 3 growlers. no one seemed crotchety their. there were bikers, families, republicans, and gays all drinking good beer and being merry. ok i made alil of that up but i did seem like a cool place where anyone and everyone could hangout.

Food --- Good selection, high quality.

Service --- Very good. We had a complaint and it was dealt with in a thorough, accommodating fashion. They are clearly serious about serving their customers well.

Beer --- Outstanding selection --- 16 beers on tap. We (by which I mean I) had two flights of samplers: 10 beers.

Ambiance --- Coming to this rather young urban professional place directly from the laid-back, rural UP resulted in quite the culture shock. However, the place is family-friendly: there were young kids running around constantly, and no one said a word. (This is a plus in my book.) Also: bars with sofas and coffee tables are a plus. The folding chairs, on the other hand, were not as comfortable.

We enjoyed the live music, and the staff that I spoke to were more than friendly. However, the atmosphere (i.e, my fellow customers) is not really my speed.

Michigan only, Michigan forever, and they make sure it is worth the drive. Around 20 some beers on tap, as well as a couple of ciders from their sister cidery. Good prices, new construction means a lot more space will open up soon! If you find yourself in Northern Michigan, you'd better make your way to Short's.

Had the pleasure of stopping by Short's twice in a three day period. The beer is as phenomenal as expected, not only is the brew experimental, flavorful, and delicious, but there also is a large amount of beer (around 24 beers) on tap. Highlights include AwwJeaahhh (double huma), Dubbel Down, Kiwi Destroy Mission, Cerveza de Julie, Captain Fantasy and the chocolate wheat.

The quality is indisputable, the atmosphere is great, although the brewery was much busier than the last time I visited. The service is great, although there isn't much service required with the way the brewpub works (you can only order at the bar).

We had pizzas, which were delicious and enormous! Visiting Short's is a treat, definitely one of my top five brewery trips!

Short's brewpub has a very nice worn in sort of atmosphere that really fits the Northern Michigan setting. Plenty of wood and a lodge like decor go well with the small town of Bellaire where it resides. Parking is on the street only, but I have never had trouble getting a spot more than a brief walk from the building.

It is divided into two sections, a bar area with a long wooden bar and limited high top seating and a music area that has lots of folding tables that make me feel like I am at a church or municipal building. I actually like that it is a simple and no nonsense sort of place and they keep it clean and tidy. My only real complaint is that any time I have been here and there is music going on that quality is pretty damn bad. I realize they want to get local "artists" in here, but it seems like any wannabe with a guitar can get on stage.

The quality of the beers is of course exceptional. Short's is one of those places that has become known for pushing the boundaries with beers like Key Lime Pie and Uber Goober, but they also do more classic styles extremely well. Every beer I have ever had from Short's is better on tap and so for those of you thinking of taking a road trip, I have to say that it will totally be worth it. They also tend to have plenty of one-offs and limited brews on tap.

I have never had a problem with the service at Short's, but must advise that it is a little bit different than most places, especially places out east. All ordering is done at the bar. They bring out food and samplers to you, but you must go up to order and pay your tab. I actually think this works fairly well and they keep the line moving, but I know some people have an issue with not having a server.

The food is also quite high quality with an array of amazing sandwiches that are all named after Ween songs. They tend to change up the menu a lot, which is nice for people that frequent the pub and I would say they have a broad enough assortment to please most people. Apps are also quite good and while I was very disappointed with the pizza, a lot of people seem to really like it.

Overall Short's is a fantastic brewpub and the absolute best place to try their beers. I feel fortunate that it is only an afternoon or evening trip away and I am wishing I could make the trip there right now while writing this review. If you did not need an excuse to come up to our beautiful corner of the lower peninsula before, Short's just might be the reason you were looking for. Highly recommended.
